A:

Both GMAT and CAT entrance exams for MBA admissions. While CAT is required for Indian B-schools, GMAT is required for both Indian and international B-schools. GMAT is tougher than CAT because:

  • GMAT tests applicants holistically across its three broad sections - Quantitative Aptitude, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights.
  • Also, GMAT is tougher than CAT because, questions on GMAT have stronger emphasis on global business school entrance exams and their specific requirements. CAT only focuses on Indian business specific requirements.

What is GMAT Exam?

GMAT test is a standardised entrance test accepted abroad for MBA, MIM and MS in Management-type courses. There are three sections on GMAT - QR, VR and DI. All are of the same duration, that is, 45 minutes, but the number of questions tested varies. GMAT is computer adaptive and tests applicants for future leadership careers. GMAT Focus Edition (FE) or the 11th edition is the latest version of the exam. Applicants who plan to take GMAT in 2026 will have to prepare for GMAT FE.

Many universities offering PG business programs may also give an option of GRE along with GMAT. If given an option to test takers to choose between GMAT or GRE, it was reported by GMAC that 70% of them chose GMAT. The reason is simple: GMAT is more widely accepted, and its 11th edition has also been developed by B-schools along with GMAC.

Check out what is GMAT test is for more details in the video below:

GMAT Full Form

The full form of GMAT is the Graduate Management Admission Test. This is an entrance exam for graduates applying for admission to MBA abroad and other postgraduate business courses abroad. The term Graduate Management Admission Test reflects the exam’s purpose and target audience. Here’s what each component means:

GMAT Full Form Components What they Actually Mean?
Graduate Refers to postgraduate-level education such as MBA, MiM, or other business master’s programs.
Management Indicates the exam is specifically for business and management-related studies.
Admission Highlights its role as a screening and evaluation tool for university admissions.
Test A globally standardised exam designed to assess academic readiness and analytical ability.

The latest version was denoted as GMAT Focus Edition or GMAT (11th Edition), now referred to simply as GMAT to avoid confusion.

What is on the GMAT?

The GMAT is designed to test thinking skills that applicants will actually use in a business school. We all know what are the GMAT sections, but what they test is more important. Each section of the GMAT tests a unique skill set of the applicants:

  • Quantitative Reasoning: This section tests applicants on their basic math level and problem-solving skills.
  • Verbal Reasoning: The Verbal section checks how well applicants can understand and analyse written arguments in English.
  • Data Insights: This is a relatively newer section or an identical version of the Integrated Reasoning from the previous GMAT version. This section tests applicants' skills for interpreting charts, tables, and real-world data.

While many test takers would not know about this, but GMAT is less about memorising formulas and more about how clearly and logically one can think under pressure.

GMAT Exam is for Which Country?

There is no one specific country that accepts GMAT exam for admissions. As per GMAC, there are around 90 countries globally that accept GMAT for 2,400 PG business programs. Some of the most popular countries with top B-schools abroad accepting GMAT are as follows:

  • Ireland

A:

GMAT is conducted all year round and choosing an appropriate GMAT exam month is important based on:

  • Applicant's GMAT exam preparation
  • Date of admission application submission
  • Last date for GMAT score submission in the application
  • Buffer time to appear for GMAT and also retake GMAT in case of not meeting the desired cutoff

Keeping these pointers in mind will help applicants choose the best possible GMAT month to appear for the exam and also be able to nail it.

Q:   How many attempts for GMAT?
A:

Applicants who wish to attempt GMAT once more, can go for it. However, applicants must remeber that GMAT if taken online or at a test center, cannot exceed attempts in a year. Commonly asked questions
Q:   What is the difference between taking GMAT exam at test centre and online?
A:

Let us understand the difference between the GMAT test centre and onlne below:

  • GMAT Online is conducted 24/7 and registrations can happen 24 hours before the preferred exam slot. On the other hand GMAT at test centre also allows 24 hours before registration but slots are limited and last minute slots can be unavailable.
  • GMAT Online is more expensive than GMAT at test centre. GMAT Online costs USD 300+taxes and GMAT at test centre costs USD 275+taxes.
  • When appearing for GMAT at home (online), applicants can access an online whiteboard or have a physical whiteboard. Whereas, at the test centre, applicants get laminated sheets and dry eraser.

This is how the two modes of GMAT exams differ from one another. Rest other aspects remain the same.

  • Also, the registration fee for GMAT Online is slightly higher than GMAT at test centre and there is no late registration fee for last minute registrations.

Thus, applicants must assess their options and time frame they have and then register for either of the two based on convenience.

GMAT Results & Scores 2026

GMAT tests 64 questions equally marked on a scale of 205 - 805 on the 11th Edition, previously used a 200-800 scale of scoring. The overall score range has increased because sections are now equally marked. The previous version's sections were, however, marked differently.

How is GMAT Scored?

The GMAT's scoring algorithm works based on scores of all three sections. There is an equal weightage for GMAT, per section, in terms of scoring. Thus, based on individual sectional scores, the overall GMAT result is calculated. The GMAT score report is comprehensive, which in turn enables applicants to understand their scores. The GMAT score report comprises these elements for GMAT score calculation:

GMAT Exam Sections Score Range Score Interval Standard Measurement Error
Quantitative Reasoning 60 – 90 1 ±3 points
Verbal Reasoning 60 – 90 1 ±3 points
Data Insights 60 – 90 1 ±3 points
Total (GMAT Focus Edition) 205-805 10 ±30-40 points

Those who opt to appear for the exam will get a GMAT Score Report with the above-given parameters and a performance review.

GMAT Exam Results 2026

The official GMAT result is reflected within 3 - 5 days on the applicant’s mba.com account after the exam. The raw scores and results for GMAT are also shown on the screen which cannot be copied. GMAT scoring will depend on the applicant's performance on all three sections. Apart from this,

  • The applicants must send their five free GMAT score reports within 48 hours of receiving their scores.
  • There is no option to cancel GMAT scores within 72 hours of taking the exam. However, applicants can choose not to send their GMAT score reports rather than cancel their scores.
  • For an additional GMAT score report (apart from the five free reports), an additional fee will be charged.

As per GMAC, 70% of applicants rely on GMAT scores to get admitted across various B-schools for MBA or other business courses globally. This is because some of the top business schools abroad accept GMAT for their business programs. The option for previous GMAT registrations is no longer available. However, the GMAT and GMAT Focus Edition scores will be valid for 5 years.

Anything above 650 can be considered a good GMAT score. If you are able to score above 700 then it is great. However, you need to set your target before giving the exam. So, check what is the score required to get into your dream college and aim for that. However, a good GMAT score is not the only criteria for your selection. Other documents include an SOP,  LORs,  admission essays,  resume, etc. Hence, you should aim to build a comprehensive and holistic profile.

Once five years have passed, the applicants will have to appear for the exam again and wait for the new scores.

Q:   How to send my GMAT scores to B-schools?
A:

GMAT scores can be sent in two ways to B-schools. In the case of the test centre GMAT exam, students can select up to 5 programmes to which they wish to apply without any additional cost. After this, every additional GMAT score report is chargeable at $35 each. In the case of an online GMAT exam, a candidate can send his/her scores to 5 B-Schools within 48 hours of receiving the official GMAT score. If he/she wants to send his/her GMAT scores to more B-Schools or programmes, every additional GMAT Score report shall be chargeable at $35 each.
