8 Tips for Settling into Life as a Student at a UK University
Going to university can feel a bit daunting, particularly if it’s in a different country, but it can also be exciting. These emotions are perfectly normal and are experienced by most students moving to the UK. Here at the University of Bath, we have come up with 8 ways to help you settle and make the most of your move:
- Do some research. Find out about the University and your course, what’s available in the local area and, tourist locations you are excited to visit. This will all help you to get excited about the move and help you settle in quickly when getting here.
- When you arrive, get the practical things done straight away; register with a doctor (known as a GP in the UK) and set up your bank account. That way it’s there when you need it.
- Immerse yourself in your new environment. Try new things, eat new foods, and visit new places. Make the most of the experience. The UK has some quirky traditions for you to discover and experience.
- Give yourself a good chance to meet new people, get involved in activities, and join some clubs and societies. However, be careful not to overcommit yourself at the start; there will always be lots of activities to do and you can keep trying new things. Meeting new people isn’t as daunting as it sounds. Everyone else is in the same position, so you already have something in common.
- Be patient. Don’t worry if you don’t settle in immediately, it can take some time for students to adapt to life at university, particularly in a new country. It’s normal that not everyone feels settled immediately.
- Most students experience homesickness at some point, so allow yourself some home comforts such as your favourite food from home, decorating your room with photographs, bring small items that remind you of home and…
- Make time to stay in contact with friends and family at home. It is easy to get caught up in your busy new student life, so make some time to catch up with those at home.
- Don’t be afraid to reach out for support if you feel like you are not settling in or making friends. If you are feeling lonely, reach out to the support services; they will have a wealth of experience to help signpost you in the right direction.
The truth of the matter is University is what you make it. Embrace the change, immerse yourself in the experience and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and try new things. And remember, if it doesn’t quite go to plan, there are plenty of people able to help get you back on track. If you do these things, you are in for a truly unforgettable experience.
