Tips: I did experience a cultural shift in a good way. The people here are more open and friendly and there is a lot of mutual respect one holds for others including strangers. On the same token, the environment is a lot more competitive and lonelier so that can be tricky to navigate.

Internships are easily available. Civil department is good.
Tips: I have become a lot more independent. A cultural shock I experienced was the small talk and greetings with strangers, which is not practised in India. I had a scholarship. I got it as I was a research assistant and a teaching assistant for 2 semesters. I am highly satisfied with the course however it gets stressful at times.
Likes (Internships): There are a lot of good opportunities for Civil Engineering. Since Virginia Tech is highly reputed in the civil department, it is not very difficult to find an internship. The internships available are very much relevant to the field of study. There are a lot of options available.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There is just one Indian restaurant in Blacksburg, which is not that great and is overpriced. There are a lot of other options like Mexican, Chinese, American, Korean, Thai etc. However no good Indian restaurants. The nearest good one is 40 minutes car ride away.

A review on MS CS at Virginia Tech
Tips: The MS thesis programme has good funding options than the MEng one. Be interview-ready before you join college. The college and academic curriculum will satisfy you. If you get a TA/RA, apart from a tuition waiver you will be paid 2000$ a month. Contact professors once you get admitted.
Likes (Part time work): The college has good academic finding options like TA/RA. Also, there are plenty of dining jobs. TA/RA comes with a tuition waiver while dining jobs pay 17$ per hour which can cover your living expenses. Time management can be pretty tight as you need to spend 2-3 hrs a day.
Dislikes (Indian Food): The town is in Blacksburg. It's a pretty small town and there are no Indian restaurants. The nearest big city is Washington DC. So in the college town, there aren't any authentic Indian restaurants. But it has good American food. I prefer cooking myself.

Great course, nice little university town
Tips: It would be good to apply to graduate assistantships before hand, there are many opportunities but one needs to apply before the start of the semester. The university and courses is nice, but courses can get full at times to book sooner. Most courses are not so hectic and can be easily managed. Do spend time finding and communicating with an advisory for your MS thesis before you come here. Living expenses are not so much and there are many cheaper options too but students should start finding housing sooner in March or April for Fall. Focus on finding internships from the very start otherwise, it can be tough to get one.
Likes (Student Life): The university is nice, it is a university town. There are regular events held and activities are available for hiking or laser tag. Regular events happen and are updated online or via weekly emails. There are numerous student clubs as well and they also hold their own activities throughout the semester. There are places to sit on the campus and have a sunny daybreak or just study on the hill. Study spaces on the campus are also nice and peaceful. The downtown is walkable and one can get quick coffee or lunch.
Dislikes (Internships): Usually internships are sought for off-campus and most opportunities on campus are for citizens but students do get a place via campus as well but that's much less in number. In the USA beyond a certain ranking, all universities are on par when finding internships and one has to ensure their profile is strong enough.

VT is a good place to be, find your friends circle. Attend events, and don't be shy.
Tips: VT is a very good Engineering college. All engineering programs are good. Decent chance for getting funding, through TAships and RAships ( higher if you are doing a thesis, significantly low chance for non-thesis programs). TA and RA cover tuition fees, provide a stipend of around 2500$ per month, and health insurance. Getting a TA is kind of based on your profile, TOEFL score etc., so there is not much you can do ( like mailing someone) to get a TA. If you see any mail asking for TAs, just apply and wait. To get an RA you should try to mail pros and try to show your interest in joining their groups for doing your thesis, and there is a possibility that they'll reply back. Sometimes your proof can talk to the depth and can get you TA funding as well. Sometimes a grading wage position can help you get a TA in a later semester. Pretty easy to find wage positions on campus, dining plays around 16-18$/hr, grading around 11-12$/hr etc. VT's research is pretty good, I would ask people to choose colleges wisely, and not just over brand value. It feels nice when you get admitted from say a very huge brand college say U. Mich Ann Arbor, but you will have to take an insane amount of loan, for doing the same course work and research as VT. The brand value might have a slight difference in job search, but with some extra work, it is quite possible to land jobs all over the country for both VT and U. Mich. As far as internships, job search, starts early. VT has career counselling for free, use it. Careers fairs have not helped me personally, but it might, you never know, so attend them. It's a good experience. LinkedIn Glassdoor etc. Helps. A lot of VT alumni can be found in companies if you want a referral etc.
Likes (Public transportation): There are free buses all the time ( that is needed). You can go to any part of the city, with insanely good frequency ( during semester days). You can also travel to nearby places for free, and to go to Washington DC pay 40$ which is also not bad. So transportation is pretty good. Nice biking trails as well.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There are a couple Indian based restaurants, and they are not that good, given the price. Indian grocery is also relatively expensive, yet it is essential to make good food. You can find Mexican, Italian, Mediterranean food. A couple of good Nepali places as well. There are always subs, sandwiches, pizzas and burgers. Nice diners, and bars as well.

Tips: I think ME is a developing department still and lacks some options in Robotics specialisation. On the other hand, bio-hybrid and Material Science has developed a lot and the faculty has some exciting research with a lot of exposure. Good resources for interdisciplinary studies.

Virginia Tech is wonderful inside out.
Tips: Blacksburg is not your regular city, it is a college town, so I would not expect a lot in terms of city vibe and events. All the people are super helpful, right from the graduate school to the international centre, all advisors are considerate. I managed to get a teaching assistantship at the ECE department which helped cover my monthly expenses. Overall, VT is a great place, a beautiful campus, good professors and research-oriented.
Likes (Public transportation): Blacksburg Transmit (the official public transportation) is very convenient for students. We have buses running every 15 minutes (during regular college) and at 30-minute intervals (during break) and it connects to every part of the city. And to top it all off, it's completely free.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There aren't many Indian restaurants in Blacksburg. We'd have to travel to the closest city, Roanoke (1 hour by bus) to get decent Indian restaurants. The ones in town are not that good. A Nepali place opened up just recently, which does have some decent Indian food options. However, on a regular basis, I usually prefer to cook at home.

A great academic and research University filled with opportunities
Tips: I experienced a cultural shift from India because here the accessibility of purchasing items is less. For example, buying stationery, clothes etc. has limited options. Mainly because Blackburg town is in a remote area. We only have a few groceries here. I got a teaching assistantship during my course. I got it with my admission offer. I think one of the reasons for getting it was that previously, I had taught students of 9th and 10th grade at an NGO. Also, if you have good grades and academic knowledge, your chances of getting these scholarships are high. I also got a research assistantship for one semester by working under a Professor. The course is high-ranked, the university is well-equipped for research and the education is worthy. There is a fast-paced environment here and every course that we take involves many practical deliverables.
Likes (Value for money): The ranking of Virginia Teach is good for Industrial and Systems Engineering and especially for Human Factors concentration. The faculty and research laboratories are equipped with instruments to carry out research. So, overall, it can provide a good return on investment. Hence, I gave it a good rating.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There are two restaurants nearby which offer Indian food. First one is India Garden which provides Indian curries at the price of around $16-17. The curry comes with a price. However, the other options like Naan, roti are expensive. Also, the taste of the food is not that great but potion size was good. The second restaurant, Humro Kitchen offers some options like Momos and many Indian Curries. There also each item is priced between $15-20. However, the potion size is small and the taste is also not good. I prefer to cook at home myself. Also, I take frozen Chapatis from Oasis Asian Market.

Virginia Tech - The best college for international students
Tips: On campus jobs are always available. Multiple internships and co-ops are allowed (with no courses-conditions involved). The weather is pleasant. Public transportation is the best. Low rent rates and great availability of apartments. Safe university town. Top 4 for Power Electronics (Electrical Engineering). Best University for international students, hands down.
Likes (Permanent Immigration): I believe if you have a Ph.D. in STEM courses it is easier for you to get citizenship (given that you have your other requirements fulfilled). It is a research-oriented school so easier to get Ph.D.s.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Indian restaurants in the city are not that good. They do not offer authentic Indian food, but Indian students should stay away from outside food anyway. There is a grocery store called 'Oasis' which has a lot of eastern Asian grocery options but moderate variety when it comes to Indian groceries.

Academically Excellent, Beautiful Campus, Welcoming and Supportive
Tips: VT campus in Blacksburg is academically oriented with excellent curriculum. Students aiming to study and focus on their master's degree might find this place perfectly suitable. I can’t think of any disadvantages of the campus unless you want a city life. Also, it would be great if students can apply before deadlines and acquire some assistantship since there are ample opportunities.
Likes (Student Life): Blacksburg is absolutely beautiful, on top of that the campus is gorgeous surrounded with college buildings, it’s a scenic park everywhere. Students can always choose flexible courses and manage studies with part time and outings on weekends if they are good at time management.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): Virginia Tech has one of the biggest career fair events in the country. I find it convenient for students to find a company that can sponsor visa since there are many options available. Of course it’s always the student's choice if they are willing to find companies without sponsorship.

A breakthrough institution.
Tips: Definitely a lot of cultural change. I do feel there is an underlying racism in Australia although I didn't quite see that commonly translated in my University thankfully. I applied for several scholarships, which covered a significant portion of my tuition fees. Some scholarships are also available once students start the course as they are determined by academic merit.
Likes (Post study jobs): For social work, there are several companies willing to offer jobs that enable students to comfortably apply for a temporary graduate visa which can also be applied for without having a job.
In social work, jobs are clinical and non-clinical in nature. Salary packaging starts from 70000.
Dislikes (Value for money): I thought the tuition fees were a bit exorbitant compared to the QS/World ranking of my department/University. I do feel the academic rigour could also be slightly more, as the subjects were more descriptive than practical. There was a lot of spoonfeeding in terms of how to do assignments which followed rigid criteria instead of allowing some room for creativity.

Tips: I personally haven't received any scholarship throughout my degree. People who are planning to join the university, especially for the Data Science course should make sure their math and statistics foundation is pretty good because students have to take at least 2 statistics subjects each semester.
Likes (Safety): Me and my friends haven't come across any trouble during our time at the university. The university has well-equipped facilities to ensure the students are safe in and out of the campus, they have dedicated lines for harassment, racism, and other safety issues. I personally haven't experienced any bad situations during my time in Melbourne for about 2 years.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): The university doesn't offer dedicated placement offers, it is best recommended for students to start looking out for jobs at the start of their final year. There are quite a few companies that offer a sponsor visa and it is hard for international students. People can get into roles like Data & AI consultant, Data Scientist, ML engineer, GenAI engineer, and Data analyst. Freshers can expect 70,000-80,000 as a starting salary.

Tips: I think all the classes happen in a more practical way than theory and that's the most amazing part about it! There is not much exam pressure! There are easy subjects and sometimes putting in the best effort helps and it's very multicultural. Too good.
Likes (Post study jobs): I think all the universities here have a good amount of career fairs that help students get jobs. They have good connections and world class facilities that help in overall development. I think it also means you have to put in your effort in searching for opportunities by doing volunteering or unpaid internships as they count as very important experience.
Dislikes (Student Life): The socialising is amazing, but sometimes after the class there are not many class events. If they could have more involved sessions, it would be great! I think finding your community could take time but it gets easier when you join clubs and chapters and part time jobs.

Easy to get into, but difficult to survive. Feels absolutely worth it when you graduate.
Tips: I personally did not experience a major cultural shift, I was more curious and excited every time I got to know about something different. It all depends on the mindset. I personally did not avail any scholarships. I am very satisfied with my experience at university. However, it is a little difficult to make friends in a new country so you really have to put yourself out there and get out of your comfort zone.
Likes (Indian Food): Since the University of Melbourne campus is in the city, there are so many options for indian food. Almost every convenience store also has samosas. The quality of indian food here is absolutely phenomenal. I don't miss food back home too much because most of it is available here. However, it's quite expensive comparatively.
Dislikes (Quality of faculty): For all my lectures, the faculty was absolutely the best of the best. The University is quite difficult to survive in. But the faculty provide the right guidance and they're always available to sit down and have a chat. They also don't rush towards the end of the lectures. For tutorials they're mostly honours students who help you solve important questions in class. They're also all overachieving students at the university.

The education is good, but support after graduations is limited.
Tips: The transition to university life was smooth; however, post-grad options are limited. Australian universities are not like Indian universities, so make sure you have the mindset when enrolling. Make sure to attend orientation. This helped me a lot.
Likes (Quality of faculty): The education level, the content, and the discussion were all good. Everyone is open to each other's POV. Additionally, we had lots of guest lectures, field trips, and practical lessons. Perhaps the only complaint that I have is the assignments. They were all subjective.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): The University of Melbourne does not provide any career support for grades. Usually, companies like KPMG and EY will usually offer a package of 75,000. It might depend on a different major. I would say, start early and make sure to job hunt. Plus, networking is gold.

Intense academic environment.
Tips: This college is not like back in India, the studies are way more intense you need to focus week on week to get good grades and if you fail here, you can't give supplementary exams, you'll have to end up extending your degree because you have to retake the subject.
Likes (Public transportation): Every place you can imagine, there will be a bus or a tram line available throughout Victoria. I personally travel 2-3 hrs or a few done shots and the transportation lies are just amazing. They are a bit expensive in Victoria but as a student you will get a concession.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): The permanent residence in this country purely depends on which degree and major you're pursuing. Personally I'm a Comp Science major and I would need college + 3 years of experience + IELTS bands to compete for the overall point system and we get to work only for 2 years. So unless you get a work sponsorship or you also do your Masters / Ph.D. here it's harder to get PR.

Tips: Try to get out of student accommodation as quickly as possible, move in with a friend, or find people on apps like flatmate finders etc. There are short term loan but not many scholarships
You have to make a very active effort from the first year, I know it's easier said than done, but once you are settled in and please take your time settling in, that is very important; however once you are settled, start building a network, going to events and reaching out to people.
Likes (Safety): Pretty safe campus. They've got on-call security and other safety measures. Never felt unsafe on campus, but please use the services if you do, that's why they are there. It is an open campus, but in the heart of the city. Need to be more careful at night and around the main CBD but the campus is generally good. Beware of cults however.

Tips: If you are looking for research and are highly competitive this university and course are for you. However if you believe you need more attention in classrooms and better opportunities represented please carefully review your options. The medical and law fields are comparatively much better.
Likes (Indian Food): A lot of food options with prices ranging from 7 for student cheap meals to and avg of 20 for each meal when had outside. Home cooked meals are cheaper but the groceries still cost around 100 per week. But good restaurant options are available, ranging from Indian to Chinese to Nepalese.
Dislikes (Value for money): The course has too many students with very little attention to the quality of the delivery. Additionally, very difficult to get in touch with professors to rectify doubts. The internships and placement options are minimal to None with high competition. Good for research but not work.

A lot of my friends got a scholarship. The university automatically detects one. But there are other scholarships that one can check tin he university handbook and apply for.
Likes (Safety): There are student houses with staff and security.
Out in the city is not in the hands on university. But it would always support various problems, has multiple clubs and associations.
I would suggest not going out super late in the city, the rest is amazing. Great food places to visit. Though it is more Chinese populated, one can easily get through it.
Dislikes (Quality of faculty): Faculty is friendly and approachable but tends to be busy most of the time. Depending on the subjects.
It’s good that we have a lot of assignments and times conferences and presentations too.
It is highly diverse and cheerful.
I personally came across a lot of different national professors and instructors.

Good place to study but worst place to chill.
Tips: It was very difficult to get a scholarship when I joined but I have heard that many people get it these days.
The subjects are really difficult and a lot of people fail as well. Please have at least 3 years of work experience before coming here.
The university is great but the country doesn't have a lot of opportunities.
Likes (Quality of faculty): Great faculty, work in the industry while teaching. Made sure that director of every big company delivered a lecture or a part of it. Industry relevant teaching. Faculty has a lot of experience and works very closely with industry leaders. The campus is really beautiful but you will never get the time to go around.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): Australia has a very specific and difficult PR pathway. Rather than spending heavily on education it is better to use that money to get citizenship because education is free for citizens here. Also, they only take the professions they need. Currently they just want health care workers, engineers and people who can do physical labour. The requirements change every year.

Tips: I have been here for 2 years and I have never felt unsafe. The people here don't do anything to make you feel comfortable or unsafe. I have gone out at night as well and nothing happened here. The people here are good and respectful, mostly they mind their own business. Be sure of the course you're taking and research properly about the job opportunities once you graduate. Connect with alumni on LinkedIn and get to know the industry so that you're not wasting your money. The teaching pattern is different here, mostly hands-on. You learn and then you apply all those things in the assignments given to you.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): There are a few courses that give better chances of getting a PR in Australia. The remaining courses don't have that great a chance. The course I did doesn't have a great chance of getting a PR. Nevertheless if I get a proper career pathway to get PR, I'll be choosing that.

Academically challenging but good.
Tips: There is a bit of a cultural shift when you come from India but you will adjust within a few weeks/ months. Getting a scholarship as an international Bachelor student is quite tough and I wasn't able to get any. I am satisfied with my university but I do feel like it is quite expensive for what it offers and I am not sure how much return I am going to get out of it.
Likes (Public transportation): Public transport is quite accessible and is very well connected. It is however not very affordable as you have to pay 10 dollars (600 INR) even if you have to travel two stops ahead. But it is very well connected to the city and suburbs and you don't really need a car if living in the city.
Dislikes (Value for money): It is quite a lot and I believe the ROI is not much. The salaries you get compared to what an international student pays don't justify it. But again, it is one of the best universities in the world so you pay for the quality and the experience it offers.

I received the Business and Economics Scholarship from my university. This was an auto-granted scholarship that was based on my academic performance. The scholarship covers 50% of my tuition fees.
I am highly satisfied with my university, course and Australia. I wouldn't want it any other way. My university is academically oriented and has amazing faculty. They are some of the best people in their field.
Australia is a beautiful country. The people are kind, non racists, warm and welcoming. I found it very easy to adapt to the culture here because it is so open, relaxed and diverse.
For my course, it is slightly a little theoretical, but it provides valuable insights. I like most of my subjects that genuinely interest me. Subjects like consumer and consumption, branding, project management, managerial decision analytics and branding really fascinate me. I also love how the assignments allow you to apply concepts in real case studies.

Diverse and different university experience.
Tips: Moving to Melbourne was a big change but a great cultural experience. The city is diverse and welcoming, though at the university, most of my classmates were from Asian countries, with very few Australian classmates. which was a cultural shift for me. I received the FBE graduate scholarship of approx. $25,000 AUD fee remission by applying directly at the university.
Likes (Indian Food): You can usually find lots of restaurants with different cuisines. One time meal costs anywhere from $23 to $35, depending upon the restaurant, cuisine, etc.
I usually prefer a blend of both, cooking at home 5-6 days and eating outside 1-2 days a week.
Dislikes (Value for money): Studying at the University of Melbourne felt like an interesting cultural experience, but academically and financially, it did not meet my expectations. The tuition fees are extremely high, and I didn't feel the value provided was justified at all. Many subjects were just plain theory rather than practical, leaving me less prepared for employment than I had hoped.

Supportive college environment.
Tips: Do not come here expecting to land a part-time working gig as soon as you arrive. Things like that don't happen easily and take a lot of time. You eventually handle yourself after finding some initial difficulty adjusting to the cultural and ethnic changes in the city. Overall, Melbourne is one of the most accommodating places I've ever been to.
Likes (Quality of faculty): Students can have the time of their lives here. There's literally everything here that a student can ask for. With over two hundred clubs and societies, UniMelb forms one of the biggest student communities in the country, students are given the freedom to explore themselves.
Dislikes (Student Life): The faculty has complete knowledge about their subject, and even beyond that, they're the perfect mix of teacher and mentor. They also know how to maintain their boundaries from students and aren't very over-friendly or in your face with regards to your personal life.

Tips: Do not expect to land a part-time role as soon as you arrive. It can take a lot of time. The education culture of Australia is experience-based, so it'll involve a lot of group discussions and class participation. Likes (Indian Food): There is a variety of options for Indian as well as any other country's food, so you won't get that feeling of homesickness. Since I've come here, I've had the best of experiences trying out different cuisines like Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Argentinean, and whatnot.
Dislikes (Value for money): I feel like the course is expensively priced, and it costs more than double what it does to a domestic student. Although I'm sure the courses provide value for money, I still feel they're at a price that might not be comfortable for everyone to bear.

Finding part-time work can be challenging if you live in the city.
Tips: My transition was rather very personal and socially based. Things get very overwhelming when you leave the shadow of your parents and manage everything alone. Making friends was really difficult for me, and my studies consequently got affected. But over time, you realise that you won't get loyal friendships here. One of the funniest culture shocks was the Unisex Washrooms. Rest, people aren't conservative here, but I suggest you be safe from junkies, since they attack a lot. I couldn't get any scholarship from Unimelb despite getting 92.5% in 12th grade - CBSE. But from other students I know as of July 2023, you can get a grant of 10,000 AUD. Personally, UniMelb is too strict and stressful with studies. There aren't a lot of options if you're seeking courses like fashion studies. I'd suggest Monash for business-oriented subjects. The classes aren't interactive or individual-focused focused especially if you have an Asian tutor.
Likes (Public transportation): If you reside in the city, trams are super convenient, and student accommodation is well-located near the university. Myki cards with a concession cost $5 and are affordable, but many students don't use them often. There are also free tram zones that don't require a Myki card at all! If you need to travel from the suburbs, trains and buses are also super convenient, costing AUD 10 per trip.
Dislikes (Part time work): It is fairly difficult to secure on-campus jobs. Finding part-time work can be challenging if you live in the city. I've been searching for a job myself for the past year, although I did have a part-time job for three months during my first semester. Managing part-time work alongside academics is not difficult at all.

Tips: The University of Melbourne is quite academically oriented when compared to other universities in Melbourne. So, most probably you might hear your friends from another university saying that they don't have exams. But it's quite important to think that exams are a more preferable mode of analysis and can give value to our degree. It also makes sure that we won't steer away from our studies. I was automatically granted a scholarship of 10000 AUD off my fee, but as mentioned, it was assigned to me based on my track record back in India.
Likes (Safety): The campus is extremely safe for students. There are phone booths around the campus, and they provide easy access to security if you’re ever feeling unsafe. The staff of campus buildings are generally very supportive. And the campus security guards do a good job of making the university safe for everyone.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): The job market right now is changing drastically, and many courses are being taken off from the PR options, but I believe the university provides enough resources for us to find jobs and utilise the most of it. Ultimately, I wish to get a job in Australia itself, as biotechnology has a great market.

Tips: Melbourne is a fun city, and the people are wonderful. University life has been amazing so far. There are so many clubs that you can join and be a part of, and the academics are also so rigorous and hands-on. I was offered the "Business and Economics Graduate Scholarship". It was given based on my undergrad performance. I really enjoy the course that I am doing, the city is wonderful, and so is the university.
Likes (Part time work): On-campus jobs are really competitive but high-paying. For off-campus part-time jobs, you need to go and hand your resume in at the store for a higher chance of success. Managing part-time and university was a bit challenging in the beginning, but you get used to it as time goes by. The average payout for part-time work is $24/hr, and for casual roles, the pay is usually higher, around $30/hr.
Dislikes (Internships): There is a lot of guidance available for finding internships at university. They have university-source and self-source internships. But the university-source internships are really competitive and hard to get. There are so many internship options of internships available in my field of study.
