TOEFL Pattern 2025: Section-wise TOEFL Test Format, Total Marks & Duration

Here is the latest TOEFL syllabus for the benefit of our TOEFL test-takers.

The total duration of the TOEFL iBT test is approximately 2 hours (116 minutes). 

When you pay your TOEFL test fee, it includes four free TOEFL score reports which ETS - the conducting body of the TOEFL exam would send to your pre-selected universities. Candidates wanting to send scorecards to additional universities can do so with an additional fee. 

There is no such thing as failing or passing the TOEFL exam. Every university would have its own TOEFL Score cut-off and students are required to achieve scores higher than the set grade. Candidates should note that higher TOEFL scores would automatically increase their chances of securing a seat in the university and also make them a front runner for any scholarships being offered by the university. A low TOEFL score would require the student to re-take the exam to improve his/her performance.

The TOEFL exam is held more than 170 times a year at official test centers. Most people take the TOEFL iBT (internet-based test).

The TOEFL iBT Listening section has different audio clips, like conversations between students and professors or longer lectures. You will answer questions based on these clips to check how well you understand the main ideas and details.

Candidates looking to register for the TOEFL exam after the closure of the regular deadlines are required to pay the TOEFL late fee of US $40 above their TOEFL exam fee of US $190 to book their TOEFL test.  

Scoring a 90 score in TOEFL is never a hard thing if you prepare well and your English is good. If you have fluency in English, 90 is the easiest to score in the TOEFL exam.

TOEFL Scores: There are no good or bad scores when appearing for the TOEFL test. There is no 'Pass' or 'Fail' score in TOEFL. The performance of the candidates is measured on candidates score out of 120.

Candidates should note that scoring in the TOEFL exam will entirely depend upon your preparation for the exam. Candidates who do not use any shortcuts and study with a plan in mind are sure to score above candidates who rely on last-minute preparations. And for serious candidates, there is no limit on their score. Hence, whether getting a 100 in your next TOEFL is easy or not would entirely depend on how you have prepared for it.
