The TOEFL Eligibility criteria are very simple and open for everyone. ETS has not specified any strict age limit or academic qualification for the TOEFL exam. Generally, students who have completed high school or are in Class 10 or 12 take the test. The TOEFL test is conducted for non-native English speakers who want to study abroad in English-speaking countries.

There is no minimum or maximum age to apply, but the test difficulty is suitable for candidates above 16 years. Anyone who wants to prove English proficiency for admission, work, or visa can take the TOEFL test.

A valid passport is mandatory for ID proof. In India, you must show your original passport at the TOEFL test center. While ETS allows everyone to take the exam, universities may have their own requirements. So, checking college criteria is important before booking TOEFL exam dates.

TOEFL Eligibility Criteria for Indians

Before applying for universities abroad, students must understand the TOEFL eligibility for Indian students. The good thing is that the TOEFL exam has very simple rules. Most students in India can appear for this test without any problem. The TOEFL exam is conducted by Educational Testing Service (ETS). It checks how well you can read, write, speak, and understand English. Many universities in countries like the USA, Canada, UK, and Australia accept TOEFL scores. Below is a clear explanation of who can take the TOEFL exam.

No Age Limit

There is no age limit for the TOEFL exam. Students of any age can register. Many students take TOEFL after Class 12 or during their college studies. Some working professionals also appear for the exam. ETS does not stop anyone because of age. However, universities may have their own age rules. So, you should also check the college requirements.

No Minimum Education Required

ETS has not fixed any minimum education qualification for TOEFL. This means:

  • Class 12 students can take TOEFL for bachelor’s programs.

  • Graduation students can take it for master’s courses.

  • Professionals can take it for work or migration purposes.

As long as you want to study or work in an English-speaking country, you are eligible.

Nationality Rules

There are no nationality restrictions for TOEFL. Indian students are fully eligible. Students from any country can apply. The exam is open to everyone. But on the exam day, you must carry a valid passport. In India, the passport is the main ID accepted for TOEFL. Other ID cards are usually not allowed.

Number of Attempts Allowed

There is no fixed limit on how many times you can take TOEFL. You can appear again if you are not happy with your score. But there are some rules:

  • You must wait at least 3 days before taking the next test.

  • You cannot take the exam more than twice in 7 days.

This gives you enough time to prepare better for the next attempt.

TOEFL Test Types in India

Indian students can choose different types of TOEFL exams:

  • TOEFL iBT (taken at test centers)

  • TOEFL iBT Home Edition (taken from home)

  • TOEFL Essentials (shorter version)

Most universities prefer the TOEFL iBT. Always check which version your university accepts before booking the exam.

Hello Nikhil. Hope you are doing well. I seem to have overlooked your comment and my apologies for the same. I am guessing you have got your results by now. Reading the question out loud should not ideally affect your TOEFL test scores.
