TOEFL Exam Pattern 2026

The TOEFL exam pattern 2026 is changing a lot starting from January 21, 2026. The test is now much shorter, taking only about 90 minutes instead of 2 hours. A big update is that the Reading and Listening parts are now adaptive. This means if you answer early questions well, the next ones might get harder.

Main Sections of the TOEFL 2026 Test

The TOEFL iBT still has four main parts, but the tasks are new:

  • Reading: You will see shorter texts. New tasks like "Complete the Words" (filling missing letters) and reading everyday things like emails are included.

  • Listening: This part has shorter conversations and campus announcements. It tests how you understand English in real life.

  • Speaking: There is no prep time now! You have to "Listen and Repeat" sentences or do a "Take an Interview" task where you talk to a computer like it's a real person.

  • Writing: Instead of long essays, you will "Build a Sentence" by moving words and write a quick email response.

The scoring is also different. You will get a band score from 1 to 6, but for a while, ETS will also show the old 0-120 score so universities don't get confused.

Hello Nikhil. Hope you are doing well. I seem to have overlooked your comment and my apologies for the same. I am guessing you have got your results by now. Reading the question out loud should not ideally affect your TOEFL test scores.
