Q:   What is it like being an exchange student at Aalto University?


As per the experience of one of the student at Aalto University, you expect the following.

a)Student life includes lot’s of drinking, it’s not mandatory, but you’ll be out of it if you don’t drink.
b) Finnish people drink loads of coffee, drinking coffee is the biggest social thing we have.
c) Get a 30-day student bus ticket. It’s quite cheap and you can use the metro, trams, local trains, local ferries and busses with it.
d) We Finns are not chatty people, but if you need help with something, just ask for help. We’ll be happy to help.
e) Going back to a). You probably come from a place where alcohol is cheaper than here, so bring as much alcohol with you as you can. Finnish alcohol prices can be found in alko.fi.
f) Aalto University is not in Helsinki, it’s in Espoo. So try to get an apartment close.


Q:   Is it hard to get into Aalto?


Aalto University is one of the leading universities in Finland. The university is very famous among international students. The university does not publish official data on the acceptance rate. However, as per some unofficial sources, Aalto University has an  acceptance rate between 18% to 20%. With such a low acceptance rate, it is very hard to get into the university. Q:   Is it expensive to live in Finland for international students?


The cost of living in Finland will vary from individual to individual. There aree various factors that affects cost of living such as lifestyle, location of your university, type of accommodation etc. The costs of living are higher in the capital region (Espoo, Helsinki and Vantaa) than elsewhere in the country. Thus, you should prepare to have about 800 euros per month to cover your living costs in Finland as Aalto student.

Q:   Does Aalto University offer scholarships to international students?


Students from outside the EEA/EU countries are liable to pay a tuition fees. For some international students the tuitoin fee may be too much. But to reduce the burden of high tuition fee, Aalto University offers many kinds of scholarships. One of the most popular scholarship for international students is Aalto University scholarship. Aalto University Scholarship programme seeks to recognise talented non-EU/EEA students. Aalto University scholarships are merit-based and are granted on a competitive basis.



Q:   How to apply for Aalto University scholarships?


Aalto University scholarships cover either 50 % (Category B) or 100 % (Category A) of the tuition fee. Aalto University scholarships are awarded as tuition fee waivers. If you are a non-EU/EEA citizen, you can apply for the scholarship when you apply to Aalto University. The scholarship application is part of the application form for admission. On the application form, you will be asked questions by which your liability to fees is determined. If you are considered liable to a tuition fee, you will be offered an option to apply or not apply for a Aalto University Scholarship. Scholarship must be applied during the application period. It is not possible to apply for the scholarship after the application period has ended.

Q:   What are the admission requirements at Aalto University for international students?


Aalto University courses minimum eligibility vary from each other. Therefore, international students should check the Aalto University requirements before applying at Aalto University. The minimum admission requirement for international students is given below.

  • The bachelor's degree must be equivalent to 180 ECTS credits or three years of full-time study
