Essential NMC Guidelines for MBBS Abroad 2026
Before applying to any foreign medical college, every student should know the NMC guidelines for MBBS abroad 2026. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has rules that help you study medicine overseas and then practice in India. First, always check if the college is in the NMC approved medical colleges list abroad (Those who follows the guidelines). If it is not approved, you may face trouble later when you return to India.
You must complete your medical degree from an NMC recognized university abroad to be eligible for licensing in India. After finishing MBBS abroad, you have to clear the NMC screening test (FMGE or NEXT) to practice in India. If your college or country is not approved, you cannot sit for this exam.
Another key rule is that your admission should be done before the deadline set by NMC. Keep all your documents like mark sheets, passport, and approval certificates ready. Always follow the latest NMC guidelines for MBBS abroad 2026, as rules can change year by year. Understanding these essential guidelines will save time, money, and future problems for Indian students planning MBBS abroad.
What You Should Do Before Choosing a Foreign Medical University
There is no fixed list for best medical universities but still you can pick right one if you follow few easy steps.
Check if the University is Recognized
First thing, you should make sure the foreign medical university is approved by that country’s education or health ministry. You can also look if it is in World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) because NMC uses that list too.
Follow NMC Rules for Foreign MBBS
- If you want to study MBBS abroad and later work as doctor in India, you have to follow NMC rules.
- The MBBS course must be not less than 54 months.
- It should have 1 year internship after classes.
- Teaching should be in English language or something you can understand.
- You must pass the FMGE exam to become doctor in India.
Check Syllabus and Course Pattern
Before applying, look at what subjects are taught, how internship works, and how the course is done. It should be close to Indian MBBS format so you don’t face much problem later.
Be Careful About Teaching Language
If you don’t speak the local language like Chinese or Russian, better choose a university that teaches in English. It helps you study better without confusion.
Check NMC Updates Regularly
Always visit the official NMC website before applying to see any new NMC notification about studying medicine abroad. It helps you stay safe and not fall in trap of fake universities.

Countries with High FMGE Passing Percentage
Studying MBBS abroad is only the first step. After that, Indian students must clear the FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) or NExT to practice medicine in India. Some countries show higher FMGE success rates compared to others. The FMGE passing percentage varies because of differences in curriculum, clinical training, and exam preparation support in each country.
Here is a simple table showing approximate FMGE passing percentages for some popular MBBS abroad destinations based on recent data:
| Country | Approx. FMGE Passing % (2024) |
|---|---|
| Georgia | 35% |
| Bangladesh | 32% |
| Nepal | 30% |
| Russia | 29% |
| Philippines | 20% |
| Kazakhstan | 25% |
| China | 19% |
(Data based on FMGE 2024 country-wise results released by official/NBE reporting sites)
Among these, Georgia, Bangladesh, and Nepal often show higher FMGE success percentages, making them attractive choices for Indian students who want better chances of passing FMGE after MBBS abroad. Countries like Philippines and China also have a good number of students, but their average FMGE passing rate is comparatively lower. Remember that passing rate can change year by year, and the performance of individual universities matters too.
List of NMC Recognized Medical Universities by Country

Always confirm these things before applying so you don’t face problem later.

Screening Test for Indian/Overseas citizen of India
As per the Screening Test Regulations 2018, if you are an Indian student or OCI student who got a medical degree from abroad, then you have to pass a screening exam first. Only after you clear this test, you can get your medical registration in India. You also need to follow other rules that are written in the regulations.

Who is the screening test meant for?
Citizens of India or anyone who possesses overseas citizenship of India holding a primary medical degree that has been awarded by a medical institution abroad need to clear this test in order to get provisionally or permanently registered with the NMC or any State Medical Council on or after March 15, 2022.
