The MCI, now known as the National Medical Commission (NMC), regulates medical education in India. It approves medical colleges both within the country and abroad. Does NMC Approve Foreign Medical Colleges? No, the NMC does not publish or approve any list of approved medical colleges abroad. Earlier, the Medical Council of India (MCI) had a list of recognized MBBS universities abroad. But now, the NMC has stopped this practice. Instead of giving a fixed list, the NMC asks students to check everything on their own before applying to any foreign university for MBBS.

Indian embassy has relased a country specific guidelines related to study MBBS abroad. The guidelines also has a list of recognised foreign medical colleges for Indian students, one can check the list of NMC recognised medical colleges abroad and can get admission. One shoud also know about best countries to study MBBS abroad.

Countries abroad are providing medical aspirants state-of-the-art universities, low tuition fees, an English environment, and above all a holistic approach to education for the Indian students taking the decision to study MBBS abroad. Candidates are at large advised to always refer to the official website of the university for information pertaining to the course fee structure, course duration, and all other important information should be obtained from the university directly and not from any unverified source. Aspirants are also reminded that the National Medical Commission has not authorized any agent or broker to the admission of students into any medical courses abroad.

What You Should Do Before Choosing a Foreign Medical University

There is no fixed list for best medical universities but still you can pick right one if you follow few easy steps.

Check if the University is Recognized

First thing, you should make sure the foreign medical university is approved by that country’s education or health ministry. You can also look if it is in World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) because NMC uses that list too.

Follow NMC Rules for Foreign MBBS

  • If you want to study MBBS abroad and later work as doctor in India, you have to follow NMC rules.
  • The MBBS course must be not less than 54 months.
  • It should have 1 year internship after classes.
  • Teaching should be in English language or something you can understand.
  • You must pass the FMGE exam to become doctor in India.

Check Syllabus and Course Pattern

Before applying, look at what subjects are taught, how internship works, and how the course is done. It should be close to Indian MBBS format so you don’t face much problem later.

Be Careful About Teaching Language

If you don’t speak the local language like Chinese or Russian, better choose a university that teaches in English. It helps you study better without confusion.

Check NMC Updates Regularly

Always visit the official NMC website before applying to see any new NMC notification about studying medicine abroad. It helps you stay safe and not fall in trap of fake universities.

List of Foreign Medical Colleges That Follow NMC Guidelines (Country wise)

The National Medical Commission (NMC) not give any fixed list of approved foreign medical colleges, but still many Indian students go for MBBS abroad in colleges that fit the NMC rules.

Here you can see a country wise list of foreign medical colleges that Indian students mostly prefer. These universities are accepted by their own country medical council and also shown in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS). Because of that, students from these universities can give FMGE exam in India after completing MBBS if they follow other NMC guidelines.

Before you join any university, make sure the MBBS course is in English language, not in any local one. Also it’s better you check from the Indian Embassy website or the NMC site if the university is allowed for Indian students right now. Always confirm these things before applying so you don’t face problem later.

Screening Test for Indian/Overseas citizen of India

As per the Screening Test Regulations 2018, if you are an Indian student or OCI student who got a medical degree from abroad, then you have to pass a screening exam first. Only after you clear this test, you can get your medical registration in India. You also need to follow other rules that are written in the regulations.

There is no official list of foreign medical colleges approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC) for MBBS abroad or for any similar course.

So, before you take admission, always check the real MBBS abroad fees, course pattern, and make sure it’s same like Indian MBBS in subjects and course time. Many students don’t do this and face problems later, so it’s better you confirm everything early.

Who is the screening test meant for?

Citizens of India or anyone who possesses overseas citizenship of India holding a primary medical degree that has been awarded by a medical institution abroad need to clear this test in order to get provisionally or permanently registered with the NMC or any State Medical Council on or after March 15, 2022.

Eligibility for Screening Test

  • He/she must be holding a primary medical degree which can be accepted for enrollment as a medical practitioner in the country
  • The person should have obtained an ‘Eligibility Certificate’ from the NMC or Medical Council of India (MCI)
  • Overseas Indian citizens or Indian citizens who are planning to pursue a primary medical degree from a foreign medical institution need to qualify for NEET for admission to the MBBS programme.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) does not approve or publish a list of foreign medical colleges. The universities listed above are popular choices among Indian students and are recognized by their respective countries and listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS).
