Eligibility Requirements for MBBS Abroad 2026 for Indian Students

Indian students planning to pursue MBBS abroad in 2026 must meet both the admission requirements of the foreign university and the eligibility conditions laid down by the National Medical Commission (NMC). Meeting the university's admission criteria alone is not enough. Students should also ensure that they fulfil the NMC rules if they wish to return to India and practise medicine after completing their degree.

The eligibility requirements for MBBS abroad differ slightly from one country to another. However, there are certain common requirements that almost every Indian student must fulfil before applying for medical universities abroad.

Basic Eligibility Criteria for MBBS Abroad

Students applying for MBBS abroad in 2026 should generally fulfil the following requirements:

  • Candidates must have completed Class 12 or equivalent from a recognised board.

  • They should have studied Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB) as compulsory subjects in Class 12.

  • Most universities require a minimum of 50% marks in PCB for General category students. Reserved category candidates may get relaxation according to NMC norms.

  • Students must have completed 17 years of age on or before 31 December of the admission year.

  • A valid passport and other admission documents must be available before applying.

NEET Qualification is Mandatory

Indian students who wish to study MBBS abroad must qualify the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) before taking admission in a foreign medical university. As per NMC regulations, Indian citizens and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) taking admission to a foreign medical course on or after May 2018 must have a valid NEET qualification.

The NEET result is treated as the required Eligibility Certificate for studying MBBS abroad, provided the student fulfils the prescribed admission eligibility criteria. The NEET score remains valid for three years from the date of declaration of the result for taking admission to an MBBS or equivalent medical course abroad, including any pre-medical or language course, if applicable.

A medical degree must be recognised in That Country

Students should make sure that the medical university they choose is recognised by the medical authorities of the country where it is located. The medical qualification awarded should allow graduates to register and practise medicine in that country.

The National Medical Commission has clearly stated that it does not approve or endorse any list of foreign medical universities. Therefore, students should verify all details directly with the university before taking admission.

Check the Course Structure Carefully

Before confirming admission, students should verify important academic details such as:

  • Total duration of the course

  • Internship requirements

  • Curriculum and subjects taught

  • Clinical training facilities

  • Tuition fees and other expenses

The course should be comparable to the MBBS programme offered in India in terms of content, duration and internship requirements.

Screening Test Requirement After MBBS Abroad

Indian citizens and OCI holders who complete their medical degree abroad and wish to obtain registration in India are generally required to qualify the prescribed screening examination, FMGE, and fulfil other NMC regulations before receiving provisional or permanent registration.

However, candidates holding an undergraduate medical degree from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States, along with a recognised postgraduate medical qualification from these countries and registration as a medical practitioner there, may be exempt from the screening test as per applicable NMC regulations.

Students are advised to carefully check the latest NMC guidelines before selecting any foreign medical university to ensure they remain eligible to practise medicine in India after completing their studies.

Why Study MBBS Abroad?

These days, pursuing a medical degree outside India is a highly viable option due to affordable fee structures in several countries and the intense competition for government seats back home. Perks of studying MBBS abroad are:

  • State-of-the-art laboratory and clinical facilities
  • Global exposure and internationally recognized degrees
  • Healthy student-teacher ratio in classrooms
  • More exposure to practical, hands-on clinical training
  • You become self-dependent and learn to navigate a multicultural environment
  • High income job opportunities globally after clearing respective licensing exams

Important NMC Guidelines for MBBS Abroad 2026

Before shortlisting universities, candidates must understand the official stance of the National Medical Commission (NMC).

No Official Endorsement of Universities: It is crucial to clarify that the National Medical Commission does not endorse any specific list of foreign medical institutions or universities for MBBS courses. The public is strongly advised to directly verify the tuition fees, course details, content, duration, and internship requirements from the university concerned before taking admission. The course structure must be commensurate with the MBBS course in India.
