Additional Tips for Writing a Good Resume for MS or PhD Abroad

While the format lists the sections you must include, here are a few basics of a good Academic Resume:

  • Font should be consistent.
  • The resume should not exceed two pages.
  • The document should be in ‘justified’ alignment and ‘single’ spaced.
  • Points under each section must be written in reverse chronological order.
  • Mention content under each section in bullet points (not paragraph form).
  • Do NOT use personal pronouns (like – I, me, us, we etc.) in the resume.
  • Do NOT use abbreviations (like etc., i.e.).

Common Mistakes in Resumes for MS and PhD Abroad

Below are the mistakes to be avoided while preparing MS or PhD CV or Resume:

  • Avoid including a profile photograph. When you are applying for MS or PhD application CV, there is no need to include your photograph. The admission committee is mainly interested in your academic and research experience, research interests, certifications, co-curricular activities, and achievements.
  • Do not mention just the title of the research projects. It is important that you provide clear details about the projects as they form the core of your MS or PhD resume. You must include the duration of the project, a brief summary in around 50-80 words, the team size and your individual role in the project.
  • As an MS or PhD CV is all about your academic achievements, qualifications and research work; please provide complete details about your educational qualifications, from undergraduate onwards. Do not forget to mention the year of completion of the degree and the CGPA secured.
  • Keep the word choice simple and precise. Unlike an SOP, a resume does not need long sentences and complex structures.
  • Use a professional font; choose a clear, easy-to-read font and maintain consistency throughout the document. 
  • Use the reverse-chronological order in mentioning your work experiences and educational details. Organise your experiences and qualifications in reverse chronological order, starting with the most recen
  • Leaving out dates for any event or activity must be avoided. You need to provide proper durations, with starting and ending months and years.
  • Do not put events in any random order. Please follow reverse chronology for each sub-heading, that is, starting with the most recent event first.
  • Avoid using any kind of flashy formats or tables. An MS and PhD application CV or resume must have a formal look, and sticking to the simple format will allow you to include maximum information within the two-page word limit.
  • Steer clear of any grammatical or spelling errors. Proofreading is a must to create an error-free resume. You can even take a second opinion from a relative or friend or even a professional resume editor, if required.
