Switzerland Study Visa: Types of Swiss Visa
There are basically two types of Switzerland student visas that Indian students have to obtain before entering the country for higher education.
- Schengen C Visa or short-term visa: With the help of this visa, students can remain in Switzerland for a maximum of 90 days and pursue short-duration programmes, language schools, and important seminars.
- National D Visa or long-term visa: As the name suggests, a National ‘D’ Visa permits students to stay in Switzerland for a period lasting longer than 90 days or three months for the purpose of long programmes such as an undergraduate or graduate course or PhD. Switzerland Study Visa Requirements
Students applying for a Switzerland study visa need to fulfil certain set requirements to which the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) Switzerland wants foreigners to adhere. These are some documents which will prove a student’s authenticity and intentions to study in Switzerland. You will also have to provide evidence of qualifications and health insurance, which would permit you to study any course in the country.
Please note that for the ‘National D’ Visa, it is mandatory for the students to hold an admission or offer letter from a recognised university or college in Switzerland.
Documents Required for a Swiss Student Visa
Indian students need to submit 3 application forms, and 1 original and 2 copies of each of the required documents. The following documents are required for studying in Singapore through both types of visas. Depending upon the type of visa requirement, there may be an addition or subtraction of some of these documents.
- Valid passport issued within 10 years and with at least 3 months' validity after the scheduled return
- Passport-size photos (4) - Pictures should be taken with a white background, should not be older than 6 months.
- Visa Application forms - 3 completely filled and signed visa application forms
- Cover Letter or Letter of Purpose - personally written, signed and dated cover letter
- Resume (1 original, 1 copy)
- Swiss university's offer letter - often to be accompanied with the fee deposit receipt.
- Academic Transcripts: Secondary School Examination, Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination, University Certificate
- English Language Proficiency certificate
- Proof of Funds (1 original, 2 copies)
- Visa Fee (to be checked with the course you apply, generally free of charge)
- Previous Passport/s if required
- Travel Insurance, if required
- School or university’s no objection certificate
Switzerland Study Visa Fee
Students applying for a Switzerland Study Visa will have to make a payment of CHF 88 or INR 9.5 K (as per the exchange rate on 18 Aug 2025). In case one needs a visa outside of working hours or an accelerated visa, he/she will have to shell out an extra amount for the same. This will be up to 50% over the standard amount.
How to Apply for a Switzerland Study Visa?
The Switzerland student visa application can only be submitted offline. It must be noted that Swiss visa applications submitted all across country are processed at Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi. Visit the VFS Global Visa Application Centre and apply for a Swiss Study Visa. They will have to complete an application form for the same. Deposit all relevant documents needed to complete visa issuance process. This they will have to do in English and French.

Processing time for Switzerland student visa is 10 to 15 days. No matter where you will submit at Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi, or elsewhere in India. This is to ensure that your travel dates do not get impacted due to any unforeseen circumstances.
