Early Action and Early Decision type of application deadlines allow you to apply early to American universities and you can get admitted before the usual spring decision date, usually by either December or January. The advantage of applying to early action and early decision deadline is that you are competing with smaller numbers of applicants and you are more likely to be accepted if your profile meets the college fit.

Possible Scenarios

Scenario 1 – In case of restrictive early action - If Harvard is your first choice of university in either the US or worldwide, you could apply there under the restrictive early action policy. Since it is a binding deadline, it would be your only early application in the US and you can’t apply anywhere else.

Scenario 2 - If you are applying to a UK university - If Cambridge is your first choice of university worldwide, you can apply to universities in the US under any non-binding deadline i.e. rolling admissions, early action, restrictive early action or regular decision. But you should not apply under early decision plan.

Scenario 3 - Early Action - If Rutgers University is your first choice of university in either the US or worldwide, you could apply under the early action policy and could also apply to other universities in the US early action, but not restrictive early action: Harvard, PrincetonYale, or Stanford.

Scenario 4 - Early Decision - If Columbia is your first choice of university worldwide, you could apply under the early decision policy. If the University of Chicago is your second choice, you could apply under the early action, knowing that if you get admitted to Columbia you will withdraw the application to the University of Chicago and any other application.
