USA Universities Accepting Backlogs
Now, coming to the most important question, are backlogs accepted in the USA? Since the US is a pioneer in offering quality education to international students, it is believed that a backlog will directly affect your admission. Many of the top universities in the US indeed prefer students without backlogs. However, some universities accept backlogs in the USA. Usually, up to 5 backlogs are accepted in the majority of the US universities accepting backlogs.
Check out How many backlogs matter and how they are counted in different countries.
What is a Backlog?
Before we start talking about the US universities accepting backlogs, it is important to understand what exactly is a Backlog. It refers to the term used when an exam does not get cleared in the first attempt. So, to obtain your degree, you need to re-appear for the exam of that particular subject, in which you have a backlog.
Universities provide a backlog certificate after you complete your studies, which specifies the number of active and inactive backlogs. If you do not have a backlog, then there are chances that the universities will not give you a backlog certificate. However, the US universities can ask you for a zero backlog certificate.

Factors Affecting Acceptance of Backlogs in the USA
Let us check the factors that determine how many backlogs are allowed in the USA.
1. Overall GPA/CGPA
Your overall academic performance is assessed with the help of your final GPA/CGPA. If your CGPA is low and you have backlogs, chances are that the university would not consider your profile. Usually, universities give preference to the number of backlogs no matter the CGPA/GPA. However, the US universities accepting backlogs may give admission to students if their GPA is high, in spite of having backlogs.

2. Courses/Subjects of Backlogs
If the subjects you have had backlogs in are directly related to the course you aspire to pursue, the chances of rejection are higher. Backlog history impacts the chances of admission even if the backlog is in a non-core subject. The universities might ask for a certain grade in the core subjects but do not ignore backlogs.
For instance, if you were to study Social Services in the USA as your aspiring course, a backlog in core engineering subjects would not act as a barrier to your chances of getting selected.
3. Time Taken to Clear the Backlogs / Repeated Backlogs
It is important to note that if you have repetitive backlogs or, if you have taken multiple attempts to clear a backlog, then there is a chance that your application will get rejected. Similarly, if you have a few numbers of repeated attempts or just one attempt, then there is a high chance of your application getting accepted in the universities accepting backlogs in USA.
4. Backlog Status — Active or Inactive
Reputed US universities do not admit students with active backlogs. Also, there is no place for lying in your university application. You are required to submit a Backlog Certificate, which has a record of the number of attempts you took to clear a backlog.
In rare cases, if a student has succeeded in convincing the admission committee to clear a backlog while making a university application, the AdCom would certainly not provide the student with an offer letter or i20 form. It means that the admission is not certain, and the letter would be offered only if the student clears the backlog.
The offer letter or I-20 form is required as proof of admission to apply for a study permit or student visa. Therefore, you need to clear all your backlogs before filing any university or visa application. Check out how the backlogs affect the chances of a visa approval.
