History
Founded in 1956, University of South Florida's convocation ceremony marks 1st day at USF in 1960s. In 1965, the university received full accreditation from Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The university occupied site of St. Petersburg Campus in 1965. In 1968, the university was admitted to the NCAA. The medical school of the university opened in 1971 and in 1973, the School of Nursing opened.
In 1980, the graduate school of the university opened. In 1994, USF ranked as the nation’s 18th-largest university in the context of enrollment. In 1998, the university was named as a Research I University. In 2009, the university was named as the nation’s fastest-growing university for federal research funds.
