TOEFL Exam Pattern 2026

If you are planning to study abroad in 2026, please be careful because the TOEFL exam pattern is changing totally. The ETS announced TOEFL exam pattern changes in 2026. If you take the exam before this date, you will get the old TOEFL iBT format. This is the standard long version which takes around 2 hours to finish and gives you a total score out of 120 marks. It has the usual long Academic passages and you get preparation time before speaking.

However, if you book your slot after January 21, you will face the New TOEFL format. This new TOEFL test is super fast and finishes in just 85 minutes! It uses AI adaptive technology, meaning the questions will get harder or easier based on how you answer. The biggest change is the scoring, instead of 120, you will get a Band score of 1 to 6 (similar to IELTS). The tasks are also more real-life style; for example, in Speaking you have Listen and Repeat, and in Writing you have to Write an Email or fix sentences. So, if you like short exams and natural English, wait for the new date, but if you studied from old books, better to give it before the deadline.
