What is the dMAT Exam?

Short answer: The dMAT is a digital aptitude test for selected Indian students applying for Master's programs in Germany.

Unlike regular entrance exams, the dMAT does not test how much you have memorised. Instead, it checks your logical thinking, problem-solving skills, quantitative ability, and academic reasoning.

The exam is conducted by g.a.s.t. and is linked to the APS process for eligible applicants.

Who needs to take the dMAT?

Short answer: Only selected Master's applicants with specific Bachelor's degrees need to take the exam. In most cases, the dMAT is required if your Bachelor's degree is in:

  • Engineering (B.Tech or B.E.)
  • Commerce
  • Business Administration
  • Finance
  • Economics
  • Management

You are generally exempt if you are:

  • Applying for a Bachelor's degree
  • Applying for a PhD in Germany
  • From a non-targeted degree, such as many BCA or B.Sc. programmes.
  • Covered under an approved exchange or double-degree programme.

Always check the latest APS and dMAT guidelines before applying.

Does dMAT Exam Replace the APS Certificate?

Short answer: No.

The APS certificate is still required to verify your academic documents. The dMAT is an additional assessment for eligible students. It does not replace the APS verification process.

If you are required to take the dMAT, you must complete both the APS process and the dMAT requirements.

Will a Low dMAT Score Affect My Admission?

Short answer: Not automatically. The dMAT is not a traditional pass-or-fail exam. Your result is shared as a percentile score.

German universities may use this score as one part of your application. They also consider your academic record, language scores, and other admission requirements.

A low score does not automatically lead to APS rejection.

What is the dMAT Exam Pattern?

According to the dMAT exam pattern, it is a computer-based exam. The language of this test is English. It takes around 3.5 hours to complete. All questions are single-choice and must be answered on a computer. Check out the table to have an idea about the pattern:

Module What It Tests
Core Module Logical reasoning, quantitative ability, and pattern recognition
General Academic Module Academic reasoning and problem-solving related to your study area

How Much Does the dMAT Cost and Where Can I Take It?

The dMAT registration fee is EUR 150. The amount in Indian Rupees may change depending on the exchange rate.

The exam is held at selected test centres across major Indian cities. Students must register online through the official dMAT website before the registration deadline. Register online at the official dMAT portal (d-mat.de). The fee is EUR 150, paid during registration.

For the first 2026 cycle, registration closes 15 September 2026, the exam is held 26 September 2026, and results arrive 12 October 2026. Test centers are located in major Indian cities, including Bengaluru, Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, and Pune.
