Top university with great exposure and very expensive.
Tips: One important thing to keep in mind before joining Northeastern is that it is one of the biggest universities in the sense of the number of students studying here and hence it becomes very competitive to find on campus jobs. There are a lot of international students and most of them are Indians so you may feel that you are not getting enough exposure. I did not avail any scholarship but I think it is difficult for international to get one. Limited knowledge on this one so won't comment a lot. Overall, I am satisfied with the university because it does give you exposure to one of the top university as well as city of the United States.
Likes (Public transportation): The public transport of the city itself is amazing. There are multiple routes, trains and buses available. University campus being in downtown makes it very well connected to the rest of the city. The public transport is not very cheap but still it is easily affordable and reasonable.
Dislikes (Value for money): Expensive tuition fee compared to other universities. Compulsory health insurance, which is very expensive from the university. NO extra transportation benefits to students, like giving metro cards etc. Always charges for everything. And charges extra compared to other universities.

Worth every penny you spend.
Tips: The education system is gonna be totally different, be prepared for that and you will get used to it. Scholarship is automatically given if you are eligible after applying. It’s an interesting journey, I got to learn so many new things and different cultures.
Likes (Public transportation): The university is mostly the Centre of the accommodation students choose, which makes it very accessible to all kinds of transportation like the range lane, green lane and public buses. Usually it will cost not more than eight dollars per day for a round trip and if you live far away, it may go up to 15 dollars.
Dislikes (Part time work): There are a lot of on campus jobs but the competition is very high. 20hr max per week is the rule; it’s manageable. One can’t do beyond that so it can be managed 20 dollars/hour is average pay and it varies depending on the position; it can be less or more.

You will have to work very hard to find a job.
Tips: It's gonna be so hard to mentally be prepared to face any kind of challenge. You'll obviously feel homesick but make some good friends to overcome that feeling and your main priority should be academic. It's not like India here, you should learn on your own, so work hard if you wanna find a job.
Likes (Permanent Immigration): The US has the best market with high paying jobs. If you work hard and manage to find a job then it's perfect but the only problem is getting an H1B visa as Trump is a huge threat right now.
Dislikes (Part time work): In the US, you should not work outside the campus and it's considered illegal so you could also be deported. Only inside the campus, you should do part time so it's very hard to find one in such heavy competition. It's very hectic to manage part time and academics. There are lots of assignments and projects so it's better to focus on your studies instead of part time.

Good college for studies and accommodation but too expensive.
Tips: Transition is easy because of a lot of Indian students and seniors. No scholarship opportunities available. University is good and the study depends on the professor. Some professors are really strict and some are easy going so pick based on your academic goals.
Likes (Public transportation): Public transport is really good in the city. We have a bus and a tram. The network is very broad and we can travel to any part of the city for only 2.4 bucks so it is good. The services are also frequent without much wait time. Trams are fast and good.
Dislikes (Value for money): The university fee is very high and on that, we might have to pay more for things like insurance. The living cost is also very high compared to many cities, even if you stay outside the city, it is costly. The coop program is also very rigid and have a lot of restrictions.

A globally engaging and career oriented experience at Northeastern University.
Tips: Students should know that Northeastern University offers a perfect balance between academics and hands on experience through its co-op programme. The coursework can be intense so time management is essential. The university has a diverse international community strong career services and excellent networking opportunities that truly prepare students for global careers.
Likes (Public transportation): I feel very safe both on and around the Northeastern University campus. The campus is well-lit there are security offices patrolling regularly, and the university has a strong safety culture. Even during late hours I've notice that the street near campus are busy with students which adds to the sense of security.
Dislikes (Part time work): While there are a few restaurants that serve food from my country the variety and authenticity are somewhat limited. The dishes are often adjusted to suits local taste and certain ingredients that make the cuisine special are hard to find.

Competitive and growth driven university.
Tips: I have transitioned a lot before coming here and there is a lot of cultural shift over here. I did not get a scholarship but I got an on campus job over here. After 2 semesters, I am not much satisfied with the university since it is really competitive.
Likes (Safety): Northeastern University Provides a Northeastern University Police Department called NUPD and also Provides a 2 mile radius shuttle called red every which takes care of the students safety I did not had any bad experience in this city Boston is really a good city to live in .
Dislikes (Post study jobs): A lot of companies offer H-1B status over here and it's really a good Work balance lifestyle over here compared to what the work balance is in India. There are a lot of job roles over here, like DevOps and SDE, data analytics and data engineering are dying due to AI.

Great job opportunities after graduation.
Tips: Start applying for on campus jobs before arriving, apply to scholarships wherever possible, as it doesn't hurt to try. If you are considering this university, I would highly recommend going to their Boston campus as they have better infrastructure and facilities at the same cost. This campus is great for people who have relatives staying in Seattle and want to stay with them.
Likes (Indian Food): Ample Indian restaurants in and around Seattle and there are many Indian grocery stores too around the university which give home delivery too if you don't have a car. There are many Indian temples around that provides meals on weekends. I usually cook at home as eating outside can be expensive.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): You can study here on F-1 visa and work on OPT for 3 years including STEM. Post OPT, you will need your H1-B to be picked to continue working in the US. Getting a green card and US citizenship can be time consuming and may take years. I would love to stay here for a long looking at the weather, quality of life, etc.

Great faculty and a vibrant working environment.
Tips: The main transition, I think, was understanding the importance of communication and networking. I understood in my initial days that I can't survive if I don't come out of my comfort zone and communicate with people. I have a scholarship of 25000 dollars for my 2 years of study. It's just that the university was established recently, everyone was given this scholarship, but I can assure you that the standards of the college are above the mark of a recently established institution. 90% of our seniors got a co-op in our college. I am really satisfied with the MS AI programme on the Portland campus of Northeastern University.
Likes (Public transportation): We have well-connected free bus transportation to campus with our college ID cards. If we want to go to Boston, Concord Coachlines are available for 25-30 dollars. Therefore, my transportation costs are usually zero until I plan a trip to Boston for work.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There's only one Indian store, Masala Mahal, in Portland, and a bag costs around 40 dollars. We have to travel to Boston or Nashua to find Indian food. Initially, in Spring 2025, we couldn't find Indian products in nearby stores like Costco or Walmart because there wasn't much demand for them.

Great learning experience, academic support, and career opportunities.
Tips: Scholarships are available, and Boston is a lively city with many students. There are lots of career and growth opportunities. The transition was smooth I didn't face any issues and everyone was very supportive. The university has excellent coop opportunities.
Likes (Value for money): The learning experience, academic support and career opportunities justify the tuition fees. The curriculum is well structured and each course involves a final project which helps students gain practical knowledge. Students have access to labs, research resources career services and more.
Dislikes (Part time work): Part time work opportunities are limited and competitive. Securing a job often requires early application or networking. On average expect 10-15 hours per week at around 15 to 18 per hour if you secure an on-campus role. Off-campus work is not permitted in the United States.

The college location is good and campus is quite huge.
Tips: There are many people and great opportunities, and I chose my desired course. There are scholarship opportunities in different departments, such as the College of Professional Studies, but I haven't seen them in other departments. Also, I understand that there are scholarships and opportunities to get into background scholarships, course enrollment, early scholarships, and different types. Overall, I am nearly satisfied with the university.
Likes (Part time work): I find it manageable to balance work and studies. While finding part-time work can be challenging initially, it is possible. There are fewer part-time options, but the advantage is the opportunity to find a co-op position. If you find a part-time position, it can lead to a co-op. You can successfully balance studies and part-time work if you are willing to commit and show interest.
Dislikes (Quality of faculty): The teaching faculty is diverse, and I was able to connect with many Indian professors, which made communication easy. Professors with experience in large tech companies provide excellent knowledge and offer incredible learning opportunities. The teaching method is primarily practical, and exams are conducted in different labs, unlike rote-learning-based assessments.

There are a lot of Indian students and Indian restaurants around Boston.
Tips: There was a small amount of scholarship provided to students. Boston doesn't have a huge cultural shift, in my opinion, as an Indian, because Northeastern has a lot of Indian students and Indian restaurants around Boston. I am very satisfied with the University as they have a very good Co-op program, and almost 50-60% of students have been able to secure one.
Likes (Public transportation): There are 4 lines on the Metro: the Red, Green, Orange, and Blue lines, connecting the entire city. Multiple buses run daily on all routes, and there is a good frequency of buses across the city. Public transport runs from 5 am to 12:30 am.
Dislikes (Safety): The university runs evening and late-night shuttle services within a 2-mile range to ensure student safety. Additionally, public transport options are located right next to the college, eliminating the need for long nighttime walks to access them.

Tips: Before joining, you should consider your faculty, facilities, location, and transportation. I think the university should be in the city, so it's easy to get around, to live off-campus, and to find a job. There are many student activities and we are encouraged to participate in them. The university is academically oriented and friendly.
Tips: The university is academically oriented. We have a lot of clubs, NGOs, and labs. The more we get involved, the more knowledge we gain. The labs are well-equipped and have high-end technology. We also spend a lot of time in the library, which has a lot of global books and research papers.
Likes (Quality of faculty): The diverse experience and the amount of knowledge the university's faculty teaches to its students are exceptional. The university is famous for its research and co-op opportunities. While the faculty is focused on those opportunities, they teach for two hours, and the assignments are of a good level.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Finding our local food is a struggle in most countries apart from India. Getting our comfort food is not a choice. Most of the time, we end up with processed or frozen food items. It is not that we can't get Indian food. We can cook for ourselves, but getting Indian groceries is a bit of a mess. Only selected outlets sell Indian groceries, and even only selected restaurants prepare Indian meals. As usual, they are a dollar more expensive than regular food. But at the end of the day, we can access our comfort food and beverages.

There are too many Indians here.
Tips: Don't smoke weed in the dorms. Don't yell the N word on the road. Come to study and prosper in your career, not just to have fun. Don't work illegally. Remember, your actions define our culture and our people. Think before you act. There are too many Indians here. The Indians in other programs and other universities in the area make me feel like I am back in Bangalore. There is a large problem with plagiarism, especially from the Indian community here. Being a TA, I have reported many. If you choose to come here, please make sure you come for the right reasons, and please have some sense of hygiene.
Likes (Part time work): I worked as an RA and a TA for all my semesters, and it paid well enough for a good life. Do not work illegally, because you will be deported and you will bring shame to our country. TA is good, and I loved it. RA helped me publish papers while I got paid for it.

Boston appeal amid mixed academics and higher education costs.
Tips: Northeastern has a very large intake of students each year, especially international graduate students. If your focus is on part-time on-campus jobs, look for other options. If you are looking to learn something, they have some good faculty members, but you need to do some research on the professors because some just don't care and will read from PowerPoints. It is slightly more expensive than average universities. If you are looking to just take easy courses and graduate, you can do that too, but again, you'll have to research your subjects. It is located in Boston, which is a good place to live.
Likes (Public transportation): Boston has better public transportation than other US cities. Transportation includes MBTA buses and trains. The city is connected using public transportation, although it's late most of the time. However, if you plan your trip carefully, you should be fine. The bus fare is $1.70 per ride, and the train fare is $2.40 per ride. I've been riding a Blue bike for the past year.

The education is decent, but the co-op program and the exposure we get through it make up for that.
Tips: Having Indians around is always a good thing when you first arrive. You will always hear people talking in an Indian language as they walk by. The only problem I had in Boston was the cold weather that goes on for almost 9 months of the year. It’s hard, but you get used to it. I didn’t get any scholarships, but other people did. Scholarships aren’t common for grad students, but there are lots for undergrads. I’m very happy with the city. On the other hand, the university is not that good. The education is decent, but I guess it could be better. However, the co-op program and the exposure you get through it make up for that.
Likes (Safety): Compared to other US states, Boston is very safe. The city's highly educated and sophisticated residents make for a secure environment. While, like any other place, unsafe areas may be present, they likely won’t be the first locations you visit during your time at Northeastern. On a personal note, I’ve wandered the city and arrived home at four in the morning, both without incident, so I can vouch for its safety.
Dislikes (Part time work): There are too many Indians getting enrolled in Northeastern, and the high living costs of Boston and Northeastern's fees make it extremely competitive for a student to get an on-campus job. The part-time work is almost always manageable with academics, and the average payout is $15–20/hr. The only caveat is that you need to find an on-campus job.

My professional and academic experiences at Northeastern University Boston.
Tips: The transition for me was a drastically better one after coming to Northeastern. The overall environment, the facilities and the quality of education, I believe, are absolutely remarkable. I can see rapid improvement in myself, in terms of applying what I have learnt in work-based experience, and in terms of communication and team-building skills. No major cultural shift that I experienced, as I have previously been exposed to American culture. Although there are many scholarships available, I am yet to avail them, as many of them would be available hopefully after the third or the fourth semester. I am extremely satisfied with my university, course and country, as I believe that I am getting a wonderful opportunity to learn and grow every day, and the conducive environment I am in motivates me to keep the momentum going in my academic and professional life.
Likes (Student Life): My day in college is mostly spent on doing project discussions and assignments, I enjoy that I can interact with many people. I participate in the music team at Northeastern University, mostly involving Indian students. There are also events organised for music, dance, and art, and I try to go to one a month.
Dislikes (Part time work): The on-campus jobs are competitive to get, like library assistant, TAs, RAships, cashier and ticket manager roles. Though hectic, they're manageable with academics. Pay depends on the role - some are level 1, 2, 3, or 4 based pay as per responsibilities and roles.

Experiential learning experience at Northeastern University.
Tips: So, one cultural shock was how there were so many vegetarian Indians that are arriving here in Boston, M.A. and how there's not a lot of vegan/vegetarian options for folks at a lot of food chain especially McDonalds and Burger King - when it says Cheeseburger on the menu, it is not a vegetarian burger. A lot of vegetarian students learned it the hard way here. I, personally, don't mind it all, so it was fine with me. Along with that, there is a courtesy and politeness between passengers and pedestrians on the street and in public places. For instance, if someone is walking behind you and heading for a building entrance just like you, you always hold the door open as a sign of courtesy. When you cross the road, the car often gives you the right of way, stopping and allowing you to cross. Also, there's a huge focus on accessibility - space for wheelchair-bound residents, accessible ramps and buildings, which was pretty cool to see. As far as I know, NEU barely hands out scholarships for the MS Cybersec programme, but I've heard that they do give out scholarships for the Arlington Campus, so that's something to consider as well. Overall, academically and learning-wise, I'm very satisfied with the university. I've had a chance to study and work with some amazing professors and got to learn some amazing stuff from very hands-on courses in a pretty courteous country, so all in all, it was a wonderful experience.
Likes (Quality of faculty): So far, all the faculty I've had were super knowledgeable in their field and always welcome your queries and concerns with open arms. I've had faculty members who used to reply back in minutes over the discussion forum whenever I posted a concern, which made me feel like they really cared about our learning. The faculty members that I've had the privilege of learning from here have come from various ethnicities and backgrounds - I've had a professor who was American, another professor who was from Greece and a programme Director/Professor who came from Spain. Also, there are faculty members in the universities who are Chinese, African-American, Polish, etc. So I'd say it's a pretty diverse team of folks teaching students here. Not to mention, they really hone in on practical, hands-on learning over the conventional written-learning and memorisation approach. I had one foundation Cybersec course, which was all projects and lab assignments - no exam at all, which made it effortlessly fun and took the stress out of it too.
Dislikes (Indian Food): So, though some options and outlets serve Indian food, they are very pricey or don't taste the same as it was in India or lack authentic options. Hence, it's usually preferable to stick to local eateries which are Mexican Taqueria joints that serve bowls or burritos for 8$-10$ piece. Initially when I came here, I was relying on flatmates cooking stuff for me or eating outside as the academic loads and work barely had you willing to go through the process of finding shops for cheap groceries/rations, going there and buying it on a budget and then coming up with what to eat everyday and then prepare it. But eventually, I realised that it is a sure shot way to burn a hole in your pockets financially, especially after you've worked so hard to save from that internship/co-op here, so devising a budget to prepare easy and low-effort sustainable meals is a necessity that one must learn here.

Career-focused program with good opportunities.
Tips: Be prepared for a practical career focused programme and manage time well. Weather can be harsh, so pack according. The cultural shift was manageable but adapting to the fast-paced lifestyle and communication style took some time. I did not receive a scholarship most are merit-based and competitive. The surrounding area felt unsafe at times, especially during late hours. I felt the need to be extra cautious off-campus which affected my sense of security. UMBC provides emergency alert systems, shuttle services, a well-lit path and blue light emergency phones throughout the campus to enhance student safety. Baltimore has a rich culture and vibrant food scene but I had a few comfortable encounters downtown at night. It's best to stay alert and avoid isolated areas.
Likes (Indian Food): There are many Indian restaurants and grocery stores nearby that offer authentic food which makes it easy to find meals similar to home. Local options include Indian Chinese Mediterranean and American restaurants. Casual meals cost $10-$20 mid-range restaurants are $25. I prefer cooking for myself as it's healthier and cost-effective though I eat out occasionally for a change.

The university has given me immense number of opportunities to build and grow.
Tips: Before joining UMBC, I think it’s important for students to know that it has strong ties to the biotech industry and is academically rigorous. The transition involved adapting to a wide range of cultures, along with independent learning. The faculty are highly knowledgeable and experts in their field. I did get a scholarship during my master’s studies. Overall, I’m very satisfied with the course and environment at UMBC.

Satisfied with my time here but a little too expensive.
Tips: I got paid an allowance once it was around $12000 however did not avail of any scholarship. My professors were all good, and the labs here are well-equipped. The only concern I have is that library is not open 24x7. There are many things to do in university here and if you have any talent you'll easily find your way up. Be sure to prepare your assignments on time. I am overall satisfied with my university although I would say that a fee is a bit higher as to where the university is located.
Likes (Internships): Relevant internships are there which give you hands on experience. The faculty and college help you with that and if you are an active member of any club, your connections will help you too. There is a portal called UMBCworks where you can find relevant internships and job opportunities with respect to your course.
Dislikes (Safety): There is only one reason why I have rated 3 on safety and that is because Baltimore as a city is a bit higher on crime rate than other cities in the United States. This city is like a remote city and you'll feel like you are in an outskirts area.

Good university, average environment.
Tips: Students should know that if you are planning to come here to feel city like vibes then you will be laid a bit back. This university is in the outskirts with forest surrounding and there isn't a lot of development here if I talk about the area. University itself is good, the extra-curriculars here are good as well. So before coming here at least talk to someone who has lived or studied around here so that you can have a fair idea.
Likes (Quality of faculty): My course here is data Science and I must say the faculty is good. They not only help you with your assignments and course curriculum but they are there for you when you are looking for jobs or internships. Try to build relationships with your professors when you are here and this is what will set you apart from others.
Dislikes (Student Life): To be in states is not like in India. Here you have to take a part-time job anyhow to make ends meet so you should be knowing how to balance your academic and personal life. There is not much to do outside as a student, don't expect it'll be like New york or California here. College has many clubs you can involve yourself with but again you should know how to manage your time.

Not much around in the area but the college is decent.
Tips: This college is best for information Science, computer Science and data Science courses and IAS a Data Science can confirm that. As compared to other colleges in USA, the tuition fee here is affordable and the placement rate is also decent. In general, academics here is good but if you're looking for social life and off- college enjoyment you'll not get much here in this area there are only a few state parks to roam around and sometimes I feel that students want more when they come to the USA. But if you are here for strict study purposes and getting settled down here then you'll not feel it. Jobs here are listed on UMBCworks and you can benefit from it. Scholarships are also there so be sure before enrolling here to check if you can avail of any scholarship and apply for the same.

The longer the name of university, the longer the list of opportunities.
Tips: I come from South India and have met many fellow students from South India here. All I'm saying is that no doubt you are in a totally different environment you'll still meet people from your place and background but try not to only sick to it, open yourself towards other people's beliefs and opinions that's how it works here in US. It's a good place to make new friends and develop lifelong relationships so if you are someone who wants that US is definitely for you. I'm satisfied with my university and that I'm in US, there are a plethora of opportunities here starting from part-time, to internships and getting settled here. Also, the university is very sporty you'll know after coming here.
Likes (Safety): I didn't encounter any un-safe event myself in this area and thus, I have rated 5 when it comes up to safety and security. All I would say is that be cautious of your environment nobody will harm you if you don't provoke or poke others. As a student I believe that you should always be humble towards people and if anyone provokes you don't act up to it. Baltimore is a diverse region so make sure to respect diversity.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There are many Indian restaurants in Baltimore like Namaste Baltimore, kumari and Ambassador but eating there will cost you a lot as a student say 2 samosas will cost you around 500 Indian rupees and I don't think that's worth it even if I consider the taste. So as an Indian student studying here in Baltimore US my suggestion would be to cook yourself. It's more convenient, easy on pockets and more of an acquired taste.

Excellent faculty and educational opportunities
Tips: UMBC offers excellent educational opportunities. The lecturers are extremely educated, and they always encourage you to do your best with difficult homework, classwork and tests. Nothing to damage you, yet everything to motivate you to achieve. You have a lot of options as well. There are always office hours, study sessions, and online discussions forums, as well as the library and other students in your classes. There are also TAs who are quite helpful. The individuals that work here are what make this school what it is. People here normally do their own thing and are concerned about what others think of them. I adore and admire these folks. The housing is quite good here. I reside on campus in an apartment with four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a complete kitchen and a laundry room. It is also pretty spacious. These locations are well-equipped.

UMBC needs to be modernised
Tips: UMBC has its reputation but in reality the university and the surrounding area definitely needs to be worked on. It's more like an old university in the middle of a hilly forest area. The faculty members and management do a great job and assist students wherever. UMBC is expensive compared to other universities.
Likes (Internships): The internship opportunities are good as UMBC has its reputation. But a student needs to actively look out for internships in order to get one. Career fairs are regularly conducted by the university and many companies come in to offer internships and jobs to students.
Dislikes (Safety): As far as Baltimore is concerned it is one of the highest crime rate cities in USA. There is no proper development of the area surrounding the university which makes it scary and unsafe with animals wandering around in silence it feels more like living in a forest.

It is worth it if you are ready to work.
Tips: It is a research oriented university. So, be prepared to work hard. The syllabus will not be easy and also don't get disappointed if you cannot get an assistantship. The assistantships are luck based and given out randomly. But you'll have ample opportunities to work on campus.
Likes (Public transportation): The area is well connected by bus and also with the University shuttle services. The shuttles are free if you have your college ID card. Other than that, you have metro trains and buses. It can take you from point A to B at a cheap price.
Dislikes (Safety): It is not very safe. The crime rate is high. There are lots of unsafe areas here. People don't go out when it's dark. You should choose your neighborhood carefully before you rent a place off campus.

The University has multi option to choose and career track.
Tips: The student should do well research about the course and the topics to be covered in the course. There is the basic or fundamental for every course if you are doing Masters/ PHD or bachelors. one should be clear and focused to have practical knowledge rather than the bookish concepts as the way of teaching is totally different from India
Likes (Post study jobs): When your masters is completed, the UMBC is surrounded by 4 states which have plethora of jobs and internship options. Washington, Penn, New York, Maryland, Ohio and many more have options in various domains such as insurance, health, education, banking, government projects which gives student to do the job and well paid as per the state policy.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Indian food is the blend of all the culture and spices such as nutmeg, turmeric, cumin, cinnamon, coriander and many more which help to fight from various infections and inflammation. Each state in India has their own cuisine and method of cooking.
