IELTS Score Validity 2025

The IELTS exam score validity is 2 years from the date your results are released. The date mentioned on your IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) is considered the starting point of the validity period. The TRF shows your overall IELTS band score along with individual scores in Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking.

Candidates must note that after 2 years, the IELTS score is not considered valid. Your IELTS score will no longer be accepted. One needs to take the IELTS test again once the IELTS score validity period expires.

Is IELTS valid for 3 years?

Aspirants willing to know the IELTS score validity extension should know that there is no extension in the validity of IELTS scores for three years. The IELTS score is valid officially only for 2 years from the date of the test.

IELTS Test Validity for Different Countries

Students must check the validity period of their IELTS test scores according to the universities and countries they are applying to. These scores may be used to get admitted to a university or get a PR thereafter. Usually, the IELTS test validity remains for two years, but if you have exceeded your IELTS exam validity period, then you can re-take the exam as the results can be received within a few days, based on the type of test you take.

Students receive an IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) only once after appearing in their allocated slot for the IELTS test. The TRF contains a copy of the student’s IELTS test scores. It contains details on the IELTS band scores obtained by the student in each section of the test. Each band score represents a different level of English proficiency of the student, scored from level 1 to 9. If the students are applying for Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) or the United Kingdom Border Agency, you can get two copies of your Test Report Form.

Candidates can use up to 5 copies of the TRF electronically to the organisations listed by them in the IELTS application for free. For further requests, they will be required to pay an additional administration fee.

Why Valid IELTS Scores Matter?

Valid IELTS scores are important because they show your current English level. All universities and employers want to check your current English level, and a valid IELTS score satisfies all their requirements.

  • For university applications, Most universities won’t accept expired scores. Even if you got a good band score earlier, you might need to retake the test if it has expired.
  • For visa processes, Immigration offices won’t process your application if the IELTS result is out of date.
  • For job applications abroad, Many employers ask for a recent IELTS score to ensure you can communicate effectively in a professional setting.

How to Check the Validity of an IELTS Certificate?

Candidates receive their TRF within 10-15 working days of appearing in the IELTS exam. The TRF contains the details of the test taken by the candidate. This also includes the date on which the test was taken. A Test Report Form’s validity can be determined from its date by the country to which the candidate is willing to apply. Generally, the TRF remains valid for up to 2 years from its date of issue.

What to Do If Your IELTS Score Has Expired?

If your IELTS score is more than two years old:

  • It is no longer valid for most applications.
  • Most universities and visa offices will not accept expired scores.
  • You will have to retake the IELTS exam if your score has expired.
  • There is no limit to the number of times you can take the test.
  • Many test-takers use this as an opportunity to improve their score if needed.
