How to calculate your performance in GRE before getting actual GRE scores? A GRE score calculator won't give you your official GRE score, but it can estimate your performance based on the number of questions you answered correctly in each section.

The GRE or Graduate Record Examination is an examination used as a benchmark to measure the potential of a candidate. Students who want to pursue MS or MBA courses in any international university must appear in the GRE General test.

How to Calculate GRE Score

In this section, we are going to talk about how GRE score is calculated. 

  • The GRE General Test is computer-adaptive.
  • The performance in the first section of quantitative and verbal skills determines the level of difficulty in the next subsection.
  • The score in these sections is one mark for each correct answer.
  • Thus, if the first section is performed well, the next section will be of a higher difficulty level. Allowing you to score the highest possible score.
  • If, however, the score in the first section is low, the next section will be easier, and the score is earning potential will also be lowered.

How is GRE Score Calculated?

The GRE General Test scores are calculated in the following manner:

GRE Score Percentiles or Percentile Rank: When appearing for a GRE General Test, along with the score, a percentile rank is also awarded to the student. This percentile score refers to the percentage of test-takers who scored a GRE score lower than yours.

GRE AWA Score Calculator

GRE Score Calculator: The GRE Analytical Writing measure contains two discrete analytical writing tasks, a single combined score is reported because it is more reliable than a score for either task alone. The reported score ranges from 0 to 6, in half-point increments. The GRE Analytical Writing (AWA) assesses "analytical writing," so critical thinking skills (the ability to reason, assemble evidence to develop a position and communicate complex ideas) are assessed along with the writer's control of grammar and the mechanics of writing.

GRE AWA Score Level

  • Scores 6 and 5.5: Sustains insightful, in-depth analysis of complex ideas; develops and supports main points with logically compelling reasons and/or highly persuasive examples; is well focused and well organized; skillfully uses sentence variety and precise vocabulary to convey meaning effectively; demonstrates superior facility with sentence structure and usage, but may have minor errors that do not interfere with meaning.
  • Scores 5 and 4.5: Provides generally thoughtful analysis of complex ideas; develops and supports main points with logically sound reasons and/or well-chosen examples; is generally focused and well organized; uses sentence variety and vocabulary to convey meaning clearly; demonstrates good control of sentence structure and usage, but may have minor errors that do not interfere with meaning.
  • Scores 4 and 3.5: Provides competent analysis of ideas in addressing specific task directions; develops and supports main points with relevant reasons and/or examples; is adequately organized; conveys meaning with acceptable clarity; demonstrates satisfactory control of sentence structure and usage, but may have some errors that affect clarity.
  • Scores 3 and 2.5: Displays some competence in analytical writing and addressing specific task directions, although the writing is flawed in at least one of the following ways: limited analysis or development; weak organization; weak control of sentence structure or usage, with errors that often result in vagueness or a lack of clarity.
  • Scores 2 and 1.5: Displays serious weaknesses in analytical writing. The writing is seriously flawed in at least one of the following ways: serious lack of analysis or development; unclear in addressing specific task directions; lack of organization; frequent problems in sentence structure or usage, with errors that obscure meaning.
  • Scores 1 and 0.5: Displays fundamental deficiencies in analytical writing. The writing is fundamentally flawed in at least one of the following ways: content that is extremely confusing or mostly irrelevant to the assigned tasks; little or no development; severe and pervasive errors that result in incoherence.
  • Score 0: The examinee's analytical writing skills cannot be evaluated because the responses do not address any part of the assigned tasks, are merely attempts to copy the assignments, are in a foreign language or display only indecipherable text.
  • Score NS: The examinee produced no text whatsoever

About the GRE exam

The GRE test is available in two formats: the GRE General Test and the GRE Subject Test. The GRE General Test measures the Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning skills of the candidates. The GRE Subject Test measures a candidate’s in-depth knowledge in any one of the following subjects: Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Psychology.

GRE General Test

  • Evalutes: Analytical writing, quantitative ability, and verbal reasoning skills.
  • Purpose: Assesses a candidate's readiness for graduate school.
  • Fees: INR 22,000
  • Taken by: Majorly MS aspirants. PhD. Students also take it up but are fewer in comparison.

GRE Subject Test

  • Evaluates: Knowledge and understanding of a specific subject.
  • Subjects: Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology.
  • Purpose: Assesses a candidate's depth of knowledge in a particular field.
  • Fees: INR 14,500
  • Taken by: Preferred by PhD or MS aspirants planning to shift their fields of study. Here the majority are PhD applicants.

Eligibility Criteria for GRE

There are no specific eligibility criteria For GRE concerning age, education qualification, experience, quota, etc. The student must only bring the identity card prescribed by GRE to take the exam.

What is a Good GRE Score?

There is no particular percentile or score that can be quoted as the perfect good score for GRE. A good score for the GRE depends on the type of course or program you wish to pursue and the university you want to get admission to. A good score is simply one that gets you admission to the college of your choice and the course or discipline you wish to learn. However, to put it roughly any score above 75 percentile (in verbal or quantitative) is considered a good score.

A respectable GRE score is typically considered to be 310+. In this score range, you can target a wide range of reputable universities. Your overall GRE score will be between 260 and 340, which includes the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections. Score of Analytical Writting section is not included in the combined GRE score. If your score is 4.5+ in AWA then it's a good score.

No, GRE score calculators only give you an overview of your score. There is nothing to do with official GRE scoring process with calculators. The ETS uses adaptive algorithms and equating methods that are not publicly released. On the other hand, GRE calculators give you a reliable estimate, this will help you to be prepare for upcoming goals.

A raw GRE score is the total number of correct answers the a test taker get in different sections. The raw score is then scaled using statistical techniques to account for slight test difficulty and differences. This results in your final GRE score for Verbal or Quantitative sections.
