What is GRE Subject Test Pattern & Syllabus

The GRE Subject Test syllabus is designed to match what you learned in college. These tests are very detailed. You must know your subject well to score high. Below is a simple breakdown of what is covered in each of the three main exams. GRE fee for Subject Test is INR 14,500. 

Note that all GRE Subject Tests are now computer-delivered and structured as follows:

1. GRE Mathematics Test

Consists of approximately 66 multiple-choice questions drawn from core undergraduate mathematics curricula.

• Calculus (approx. 50%): Differential and integral calculus, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, and calculus-based applications.
• Algebra (approx. 25%): Elementary algebra, linear algebra (matrices, vector spaces, linear transformations), and abstract algebra (group theory, rings, and fields).
• Additional Topics (approx. 25%): Discrete mathematics, real analysis, complex variables, probability, statistics, and numerical analysis.

2. GRE Physics Test

Consists of approximately 70 multiple-choice questions spanning classical and modern physics paradigms.

• Electromagnetism (18%): Electrostatics, currents, magnetic fields, Maxwell’s equations, and AC circuits.

3. GRE Psychology Test

Consists of approximately 144 multiple-choice questions evaluating comprehensive knowledge of behavioral and cognitive sciences.

GRE Subject Test vs GRE General Test 2026

The GRE General Test and GRE Subject Test are used for different admission purposes. Most students applying for MS, MBA, or graduate programs abroad take the GRE General Test. It checks basic skills in Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. The GRE Subject Test 2026 is different.
