Stony Brook University History
Found in 1957 as a college for the preparation of secondary school teachers of Maths and Science, Stony Brook University is the flagship university of New York, and also claims to be the #1 public university in the region.
The insitute was first based on the grounds of a former Gold Coast estate, before a new campus was established near the village of Stony Brook, on a land donated by Ward Melville, a local philanthropist in 1962.
The institute continuted its expansion over the rest of the 20th century, in the process becoming a member of the State University of New York (SUNY) system as well as the Association of American Universities. SBU is also a public sea-grant and space-grant research university. having witnessed more 2,330 inventions within the premises of its campus, while also acquiring more than 700 patents in the process.
