The UK Intake System for International Students

The UK academic calendar offers three distinct entry points for international students. These are the three different intakes of the UK universities, explained below.

  1. Autumn/Fall/September Intake - This is the main intake in UK in which all universities, all courses and all scholarships are available. This is also the most competitive intake in UK as most international students apply in this intake due to large number of courses and universities being open for admissions. This intake let’s you prepare your application in about an year - this is the longest time students get for any intake to prepare their application.
  2. Winter/January Intake - The January intake is the secondary intake in UK. This is most oftenly taken by students when they miss out on the September intake or if thy needed more time to prepare their applications. The competition is less fierce and the class sizes are small in this intake. However, lesser courses are available during this time. The January intake is taken by those international students who missed out on the Sep intake due to missing documents or late application and do not want to wait another whole year to start their studies.
  3. Spring/May Intake - This is the smallest intake - or most specialised intake in UK. Very limited number of universities are open during this intake for select programs, primarily in business, hospitality and healthcare.

Understanding the difference between these three intakes - in terms of scale, opportunity and strategy - is the foundation of smart planning for studying in UK.

Upcoming Intakes in UK for International Students in 2026-27

The details on each of the upcoming intakes in UK for Indian students are given below.

1. September 2026 Intake in UK

The September intake in UK remains the undisputed flagship of the UK academic calendar. Over 80% of all international students, and more than 70% of Indian students specifically, choose this window.

Why this intake matters: Starting studies in September puts Indian students on the standard UK academic calendar, which aligns them well with the recruitment cycles, summer internships and campus-life milestones like Freshers' Week. It also aligns well with the Indian academic year, giving students who complete their bachelor's degrees in May or June time to prepare their applications, sit English language tests and arrange finances before the intake begins.

The deadlines for UG courses for the September 2026 intake in UK are passed. The deadline for Oxford, Cambridge and most Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Dentistry courses was 15 October 2025. The main UCAS deadline for equal consideration across most undergraduate programs was 14 January 2026.

Unlike undergraduate admissions, postgraduate deadlines are university-specific and rolling. However, for competitive programs at top-tier universities like UCL, Imperial, LSE, Edinburgh, etc., deadlines can fall as early as November or December 2025. Most other universities accept applications from February to May 2026. The golden rule is to apply in the first round to maximise your chances and scholarship eligibility.

If you have not yet applied, focus immediately on completing your IELTS or PTE test (aiming for 6.5 or above overall), drafting a strong Statement of Purpose (SOP), gathering two Letters of Recommendation (LORs) and compiling your transcripts and academic certificates. Apply to universities with open rolling deadlines - many will continue to accept applications through March to May 2026.

Once you receive a Conditional or Unconditional Offer, accept it and pay the required deposit. Your university will then issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number. Use the CAS to apply for your Student Visa, ideally 3 months before your course start date, ensuring you have the required funds held in your bank account for 28 consecutive days.

3. May 2026 Intake or Spring Intake in UK 2026

The May or Spring intake is the smallest of the three UK intakes. It is offered only by a handful of universities and colleges for a limited number of courses. The deadlines of most of the colleges and universities participating in the May intake in UK falls in the end week of March 2026. For example, the University of East London, Bangor University and the University of Portsmouth have their application deadlines falling in the last week of March for the spring intake.

Students who missed the May 2026 window should focus their efforts on either the September 2026 intake (for rolling application, if they can act quickly) or begin planning for January 2027.

2. January 2027 Intake in UK

The january 2027 is the perfect intake if you have missed the Sep 2026 intake deadline or if you wanted more time for preparation. It is worth noting here that while very few universities participate in the January intake in UK as compared to its September intake, the January intake still offers over 10,000 courses across dozens of institutions - particularly at the postgraduate level. The popular disciplines available during January intake in UK include Business and Management, Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Law, Education and Nursing.

Applications for the January 2027 intake will open around September - October 2026 and close in November to early December 2026. However, given the short and concide application timeline of this intake, Indian students are advised to begin preparing early in July-August 2026.

Some of the top universities participating in the January intake in UK are -

  1. Queen Mary University of London
  2. University of Liverpool
  3. Brunel University London
  4. Edinburgh Napier University
  5. University of Portsmouth
  6. Coventry University

4. September 2027 Intake in UK

For students currently in their penultimate year of bachelor's studies in India, or those who need more time to prepare financially and academically, planning for September 2027 is a wiser strategic move. Applications for September 2027 will open in October-November 2026 for most postgraduate programmes and October 2026 for UCAS undergraduate applications.

Starting preparation for September 2027 intake in UK by mid 2026 can put you in an excellent position to compete for top courses and scholarships.
