F1 visa in USA is applicable to international students enrolled to US universities/colleges for a full-time course. Applicants applying for a US student visa and qualifying for an F-1 visa will need to submit certain supporting documents along with the SEVIS fee and student visa fee. F1 Visa Application Process in USA 2026

Before starting, understand the process of getting accepted at US universities. As a part of the application process for filing an F1 visa, here is the list of documents an international applicant would require for submission-

Step 1- Get an Offer Letter & I-20 from US University

Upon enrollment at US university, the applicant will receive the I-20. Students need to show the funds and pay the deposit if required by the university to get the I-20 form. The I-20 form will act as a supporting document to prove that you have enough funds for your entire stay, as there are limited legal employment opportunities. This form will also serve as the medium to schedule an appointment for your US student visa interview with the local US Embassy or Consulate.

Step 2- Submit SEVIS Fee

Once you receive the acceptance letter and I-20 from the US University, you will be registered with the SEVP (Student and Exchange Visitor Program). Pay the one-time application fee or SEVIS fee of USD 350 (INR 30,101). Also, keep these handy -

  • SEVIS ID number

Before going for F1 visa interview, applicants should note the ist of documents that they should carry with them. These documents can be requested by the visa officers any time during the F1 visa interview. Try not to miss any from the list:

Mandatory F1 Visa Documents for Interview

When going for F1 visa interview at US Embassy in India, applicants should carry with them these madatory F1 visa documents. These are mostly university acceptance and interview visa fee related documents:

  • I-20 form of acceptance from US university
  • DS-160 form copy with barcode along with social media accounts information
  • SEVIS fee receipt
  • MRV fee receipt
  • Valid passport

Academic Documents Required for F1 Visa Interview

  • High school passing certificate

  • Recent liquid assets (3–5 days before interview) like Affidavit of Support, CA summary statement, e vidence covering the full first year (tuition/living) plus available funds for remaining years, per I-20 .
  • Letters from banks/authorities confirming that shares, PPF, and mutual funds can be liquidated immediately.
  • Previous bank records or statements, tax and IT returns, along with payslips of the last 6-9 months of employment of the one who is funding.
  • Original property proof of ownership or sale receipts.
  • J form for agriculture if the applicant's parent or guardian comes from the agriculture sector of employment.

Documents Required for Biometric for US F-1 Visa in India

When students go for an OFC appointment for biometrics before scheduling a US student visa interview slot, they have to take along those documents as well. The OFC documents that are also required for F1 visa interview are as follows:

  • DS-160 confirmation page
  • OFC confirmation page 
  • Passport sized photo 

Other Supporting Documents for F1 Visa USA

Apart from these, there are other supporting documents that are required to be submitted along with F1 visa in USA. These are as follows:

  • Property papers with permanent house address
  • Documents like employment letters, property deeds, or family records to prove you'll return.
  • In case of rented accommodation, submit the rent agreement
