Owing to the major benefits of remaining in Australia after completing studies, an increasing number of individuals are opting to apply for Permanent Residency (PR). This article outlines the specific PTE scores required for PR in Australia in 2026-27.

PTE Scores for PR in Australia

For millions of applicants dreaming of a life in Australia, the path to PR runs through a competitive, points-based system where every mark matters. Your English language proficiency score can ultimately mean the difference between receiving a formal invitation and facing an indefinite wait. Over the years, the Pearson PTE Academic Exam has become one of the most popular globally accepted English tests due to its fast results turnaround, unbiased AI-based evaluation and wide recognition by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA).

However, applicants must navigate a critical regulatory shift. Following comprehensive alignment studies by the Australian government, the DHA refurbished the PR score bands required for different visa categories. The PTE score thresholds were revised for the Australian PR across all proficiency levels, introducing component-specific benchmarks that now demand higher performance - particularly in Writing and Speaking. The authorities replaced the old uniform "flat score" requirements with strict, component-specific benchmarks - demanding noticeably higher performance in the Writing and Speaking modules. For test-takers who have been preparing using outdated historical guides, understanding these asymmetrical per-component score targets is important before sitting the exam or lodging an Expression of Interest (EOI)

This article highlights the PTE scores required for Australia PR in 2026-27.
