PTE cut-off marks are the minimum PTE scores required to be admitted to a university abroad. As per the other usability of the PTE scores, the PTE score cut-off can also be related to the minimum score requirements for getting a visa for study, work or immigration purposes.

Note- That there are no universal passing marks for PTE exam and universities abroad individually determine the PTE scores requirements on the basis of their courses. The PTE scores range from 10 to 90, and scores between 50 and 70 are generally considered good for university admissions.
The Pearson PLC Group, the conducting body of the PTE exam, has not designated any PTE cut-off scores. However, the different ranges of the PTE scores are associated with the different CEFR levels. Most top universities and colleges abroad require a CEFR B2 level (equivalent to a PTE score range of 59-75) of proficiency from their prospective students to be able to get admitted and pursue most of their bachelor's programs.

Q:   What is the passing score for PTE test?
A:

There is no passing marks for the PTE exam. According to the Pearson PLC Group, PTE test takers should aim to score a minimum of CEFR B2 level, which equals to a PTE Academic score range of 59-75. With that level of English proficiency, the students become eligible to apply for most of the universities abroad.

These scores imply that the student can follow academic-level instructions and participate in academic education both coursework and student life. This level of English is also considered eligible for professional registration, employment and applying for Australian skilled migration visas.

Q:   What PTE Score is required for Australia?
A:

The minimum PTE scores required to get admitted to the Australian universities range from 50 to 58. Note that these scores do not confirm admission to a university and the decision lies solely on the university admissions team.

Q:   Is 75 a good PTE score?
A:

Yes. A 75 PTE score falls under the 'Very Good' category. A PTE 75 score is equivalent to IELTS 7.5 - 8.0 band score. However, candidates should note that the real determining factor is their preferred university PTE score requirements. If they are eligible to apply with their PTE scores, good or else they can always re-take the test.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   Should I focus on accuracy or speed in the PTE exam?
A:

You need to balance on both speed and accuracy, but accuracy usually comes first, especially for content-based questions in the PTE exam.

  • Accuracy: Without accuracy, speed is useless. Incorrect answers written fast or even in full length don't get any marks.
  • Speed: PTE is highly timed exam. You must learn to work quickly and efficiently. Hence, the ideal approach is to practice until you can achieve accuracy within the time limits for each question type.
Q:   How much PTE score is required for UK Student visa for degree level and above courses?
A:

The minimum PTE scores required for the UK Tier 4 General Student visa for the degree level and above courses is 59

Q:   Do universities look at my best PTE score, or do they average all my attempts?
A:

Universities and immigration bodies will consider your best overall score from a single sitting that meets all their specific criteria (including sectional cut-offs).

You can choose to share only your best scores if you have taken multiple attempts of the PTE esam. Your university or visa offices cannot view the scores from your other attempts (except from the ones that you share).

Commonly asked questions
Q:   What is the passing score for PTE test?
A:

There is no passing marks for the PTE exam. According to the Pearson PLC Group, PTE test takers should aim to score a minimum of CEFR B2 level, which equals to a PTE Academic score range of 59-75. With that level of English proficiency, the students become eligible to apply for most of the universities abroad.

These scores imply that the student can follow academic-level instructions and participate in academic education both coursework and student life. This level of English is also considered eligible for professional registration, employment and applying for Australian skilled migration visas.

Q:   How many times can a candidate appear for the PTE exam?
A:

A candidate can take the PTE exam 12 times within a period of 12 months. An extra number of attempt(s) can be granted only if your reason for requesting an extended number of attempts aligns with the Pearson PTE test's retake policy. However, candidates cannot sit for another PTE exam until the following conditions are met -

  1. They have received the results of their last PTE exam. Until you receive the result of your last PTE test, you will not be able to register for a new one on the official PTE website.
  2. They have not already booked another PTE exam date. If you have booked a PTE test date, you will not be able to book another one. This is done to ensure that all the PTE test seats are taken by test takers at all times.

One can book another PTE test at the next convenient date after they have received the results of the previous test. In the light of above points, candidates can take their next PTE exam within a gap of 4-5 days, and this is the only criteria set by the board. They only need to wait to receive their scores before they can book their next test. Candidates should note that PTE Test Scores are made available to test takers within 2 days.

Q:   What is the required score to crack PTE exam?
A:

According to the Pearson PLC Group, PTE test takers should aim to score a minimum of CEFR B2 level, which equals to a PTE Academic score range of 59-75. With that level of English proficiency, the students become eligible to apply for most of the universities abroad. These scores imply that the student can follow academic-level instructions and participate in academic education both coursework and student life. This level of English is also considered eligible for professional registration, employment and applying for Australian skilled migration visas. Any PTE score corresponding to an above-CEFR B2 level is considered a good PTE score.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   Can I go Australia with 6 bands in PTE?
A:

Yes, you can go to Australia with a 6-band equivalent in PTE — but it depends on what you're applying for (student visa, work visa, or permanent residency) and what “6 bands” refers to.

If "6 Bands" is referred to as IELTS bandscore equivalent, then an overall IELTS score of 6.0 is roughly equal to a? PTE Academic score of about 50–58.

This allows you to go on a Australian Subclass-500 student visa which require a minimum PTE score 50. However, this score may not be suitable for admissions to many top Australian universities as they require a minimum PTE score of 65.

Q:   Is PTE harder than IELTS?
A:

Yes, PTE may seem harder to some students who have taken the IELTS exam earlier. This is because the PTE exam is concluded in a single sitting of 2 hours. However, the IELTS exam takes place in two different sittings within a span of a week. This gives students more time to prepare for the speaking part of the IELTS test.

One other difficulty that the student may come around is that the test is completely automated and student may not find any human examiner for any part of the test. This might intimidate the students who are not comfortable with taking the test on a computer.

Q:   Is PTE accepted in Australia for PR?
A:

Yes, the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) is accepted by the Australian Department of Home Affairs (DHA) as proof of English language proficiency for all visa categories, including Permanent Residency (PR).

Q:   Are PTE scores required for Australia Student Visa?
A:

Yes, the English test scores are required to apply for an Australian student visa if you come from a non-English-speaking country. PTE Academic is widely accepted by the Department of Home Affairs in Australia for all types of study, work and immigration purposes. Hence, yes, the PTE scores are required for the Australian student visa.

Candidates should note that PTE Academic is an English proficiency test that would be required by your university as part of their admission requirements/procedure. The Australian Student Visa would be based on your admission letter.

Q:   Is 65 easy to score in the PTE exam?
A:

Achieving 65 in the PTE exam is completely possible. However, the easyness or difficult of it depends on the individual's preparation and strategy. As the PTE exam consists of inetgrated-skills based questions, candidates may find it easier to attempt on several tasks. While some may be intimated with its completely computer-based format, others may find it more convenient than the other paper-based alternatives.

The 65 scores in the PTE exam are equivalent to an IELTS band 7, which means candidates will need to show a strong grasp on the English language. These many marks are also acceptable at major universities abroad for international students admissions. Below is an overview of the ideal time-period required by different test takers based on their current proficiency in the English language.

Your Current English LevelEffort Required to Score 65 PTE
Fluent / Near-Native SpeakerMay need 1–2 weeks of test familiarization
Upper-Intermediate (B2 level)Need 3–6 weeks of targeted prep
Intermediate or Below (B1)Requires 2–3 months of focused study
Q:   What are the passing marks for the PTE exam?
A:

There is no designated passing score given by Pearson to the test takers. However, there is "minimum score requirements" or "PTE score cut-off" set by the abroad universities and visa offices. The basic criteria considered here is that you must have CEFR-B2 level of English profeciency to undertake a course abroad.

The PTE scores equivalent to the CEFR-B2 level range from 59-75. Hence, any PTE score within this range generally qualifies you to get admitted to universities abroad.
