Why do we need the Percentage to CGPA Conversion?

The percentages are a common indicator of academic performance used by Indian schools and colleges. On the contrary, the universities abroad use grades to picturise/showcase a student's academic performance. And for that reason, they expect applicants to their esteemed courses to show their percentages in the form of grades too.

Many universities - both domestic and international require a CGPA or GPA, respectively, to evaluate applications of the students. Hence, converting percentage to CGPA is important for students from the point of view of standardising their academic performances. Their grades are used for applying for higher education, jobs and international evaluation of profiles for universities. Also, many scholarships are based on minimum CGPA thresholds rather than percentages.

The conversion of percentage into CGPA can be done by doing a simple mathematical calculation, i.e. by dividing your percentage by 9.5. This formula gives you a CGPA on a 10-point scale - which is a universal grading scale used across universities in India. This formula to convert percentage into CGPA is shown in the table below.

Do you know why we use only '9.5' in all Percentage to CGPA and vice-versa Conversions?

Most Indian schools (especially CBSE) tell you to divide your percentage by 9.5 to get your CGPA out of 10. So if you scored 85%, you get roughly 8.94 CGPA. Some places just divide by 10 instead and if you're converting to the US-style 4-point GPA, you divide by 25. But the question is why CBSE and other major educational institutes recommend 9.5 and not 10?

CBSE looked at years of data from their best students (those scoring 91-100 marks) and found their average was around 95. So they divided 95 by 10 (the highest CGPA value on a 1-10 scale) and got 9.5. So, it's not a random number - it's based on real student performance data. But here is a catch - if you actually scored a full 100% and you divide that by 9.5, you'd get a 10.52 CGPA. But since CGPA can't go above 10, this doesn't work out well. So, you'll be required to flip it around, i.e. a perfect 10 CGPA only equals 95% on paper - never a full 100%. So technically, no one with a perfect CGPA is ever "credited" with 100%. This creates a kind of built-in safety net for students - whether someone scores 91% or 99% - both fall into the same top CGPA bracket.

Thus, a CGPA of 7.5 to 8.0 on a 10-point scale is generally considered the "safe" for getting admitted to most master's courses abroad. For USA's, Canada's and Germany's universities, a CGPA of 7.0 and above is considered okay; for UK's and Australia's universities, CGPA of 6.0 and above is okay for admissions and so on.

Tips to Improve CGPA

For Indian students trying to get into the top universities, getting high CGPAs in their class 12th exams is a must. So here are a few practical tips for them to improve their CGPA - 

1. Define your targets. Know what you want to achieve and how much time you have to achieve that. Clarity impacts speed and preparation strategies. 
2. Allocate time for each module/subject. This practice works best when your exam dates are approaching and you have very little definite time to prepare. Keep an alarm clock on your study table and set timers for an hour or two for each module. This will stop you from dwelling on the same topics for a long time. 
3. Understand the topic - do not memorise it. The same goes for the different question types - don't memorise how you solved a particular question; instead, focus on how you reached up to the solution. This way, even if a new type of question appears in the exam and your concepts are clear, you'll be easily able to solve it. 
4.  Use previous years' exam papers - this will give you an idea of how questions are asked on the topics you're studying.
