Eligibility for MS in Germany for Indian Students

Candidates should note that eligibility for MS in Germany is different from the admission requirements to study for a Masters in Germany. Eligibility for studying MS in Germany is about the general requirements that are required to be fulfilled by the student in order to pursue a master’s in Germany. This is regulated by German law. The eligibility for MS in Germany includes:

1. Bachelor’s Degree

Irrespective of the university the candidate is looking to take admission. The candidate would be required to have completed a bachelor’s/undergraduate degree or its equivalent from a recognized university. This is a mandatory requirement for all students looking to pursue a master’s in Germany. Candidates should note that their bachelor’s degree must be equivalent to a German Bachelor’s degree. Meaning, depending on the course of study that candidates are interested in, their initial degree course will need to be equivalent to a German Bachelor course with a duration of 3, 3.5 or 4 years.

2. Language Proficiency Certificate

Whether candidates are planning to study courses in the English language or study programmes in German they would require a language proficiency certificate for the same. Meaning, candidates who are going to study courses in English would be required to either opt for IELTS, PTE, TOEFL or DET to prove their English language proficiency. Similarly, candidates who are going to study courses in the German language will be required to have certified proficiency in the German language. German language tests recognized are the TestDaF language exam, Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang DSH, Telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule exam, Deutsches Sprachdiplom II and Goethe C2 certification.

3. German Study Visa (Residence Permit)

All international students who are travelling to study in Germany would need to have a German student visa (Residence Permit) with them. Courses that are six months or less in duration are not required to apply for a German Student Visa but can enter the country on a Schengen visa. However, all programmes that are longer than six months will require students to apply for a German Student Visa. The German student visa process will also include students having to show their financial proof and health insurance as part of the visa application process. November 2022 onwards, all Indian students applying for a Long Stay Student Visa in Germany must have an APS Certificate. An APS Certificate for Germany is proof of the authenticity of their Indian academic documents and is a prerequisite for your German Study visa application. Candidates should note that the admission requirements are decided by the university admission committee and are in addition to the above-mentioned eligibility criteria. MS in Germany requirements for admission to universities in Germany include the following:

In addition to the general eligibility criteria, universities in Germany have specific admission requirements that applicants must fulfill:

• Online Application Form: Complete the online application form for the specific university and program.
• Educational Documents: Provide copies of your educational details, including high school and undergraduate transcripts.
• APS Certificate: As of November 2022, an APS Certificate is mandatory for Indian students applying for a long-stay student visa in Germany. The APS (Academic Evaluation Center) certificate validates the authenticity of your academic documents from India. It is recommended to apply for the APS certificate before starting the university application process, as it can take time to receive.
• CGPA: The other MS in Germany requirement is having the right CGPA for admission. While Tier III universities might forgo the CGPA requirements as part of the admission process. Many renowned universities would require candidates to provide their CGPA scores as part of the admission process. A CGPA score of 8 and above is ideal for top universities in Germany including TU9. A minimum CGPA between 6 and 7 is ideal for good universities in Germany. Candidates should note that while CGPA is an important requirement, however, universities give equal weightage to other factors of the application process. While some universities may not consider CGPA, many renowned universities require it as part of the admission process. A CGPA of 8 and above is ideal for top universities in Germany, including TU9. A CGPA between 6 and 7 is suitable for good universities. The minimum CGPA required to pursue an MS in Germany is 7 or 70%.
• Resume: Submit a resume highlighting your skills, work experience, and achievements. An academic resume or a CV (curriculum vitae) is a summary of your academic and professional qualifications, achievements, contributions, extracurricular activities, and technical skills. Your resume casts your first impression on the admission committee and thus, must be designed very carefully and subsequently, critiqued meticulously. 
• SOP: A Statement of Purpose (SOP) is a reflection of your personality that you portray in front of the admissions committee (AdCom) for securing admission to a foreign University. It provides you with a chance to impress the committee, by presenting your profile, through an essay that describes your personality traits not covered in your academic documents.
• Recommendation Letters: Obtain recommendation letters from professors or employers who can attest to your academic or professional capabilities. The Letter of Recommendation (LOR) is a document that provides the admission officers with a comprehensive insight into your suitable candidature, for admission into the concerned University.  It aims to provide a favourable picture of your academic performance, strengths, experiences, achievements, contributions, and skills communicated by the recommender.
• Passport: Provide a valid passport to prove your identity.
• GRE/GMAT: Clear international exams like GRE/GMAT. Candidates looking to study MS in Germany are required to provide GRE or GMAT scores depending on the admission requirement of the university. While universities in Germany offer GRE/GMAT score waivers. However, having standard test scores is only going to make your application stand out.
