Is education free in Germany?

Many students are confused and ask me, Is education free in Germany? The short answer is YES! It sounds too good to be true, but Germany education free policy is real.

You see, in Germany education is free because the government believes that studying should not be a business. It is a right for everyone. So, does Germany provide free education to everyone? Yes. It does not matter if you are German or from another country.

People often ask, is education free in Germany for international students? The answer is absolutely yes. Even if you are from India, is education free in Germany for Indian students? Yes, for Indians also the tuition fee is zero.

But you have to be careful. Education in Germany is free only in the "Public Universities". If you go to a private college, you have to pay high fees. But in the government Public ones, the Germany free education system works perfectly. You just have to pay a very small administration fee (maybe 200-300 Euros).

So when you ask is studying in Germany free, remember that the college fee is zero, but you still need money for your room rent and food. But basically, is Germany education free? Yes, mostly it is. Is education in Germany free for Masters and Bachelors both? Yes, it is a great opportunity for all of us.

Why does Germany Provides Free Education to Indian Students?

You must be thinking, is this a scam? Why does Germany provide free education to us when countries like USA and UK charge so much money? It sounds strange, but there is a smart reason behind it. It is not charity, it is a business plan by the German government.

  1. They Need Young People: The biggest problem in Germany is that their population is getting very old. They do not have enough young people to work in big companies like BMW, Mercedes or Siemens. They need smart engineers and IT experts. They know Indian students are very hard working and intelligent. So, they offer Germany free education for Indian students to attract the best brains from India to come and save their economy.
  2. They Want Future Tax Payers: This is the main logic. They give you free education in Germany for 2 years. But they know that after you finish studies, you will get a good job there. Then you will pay taxes to the German government for next 30 or 40 years. So, the money they spent on your college, they will get it back double through your taxes. This is why is education free in Germany for international students is a "Yes". It is a long-term investment for them.
  3. Education is Not a Business: In Germany, people believe that knowledge should be free for everyone, whether rich or poor. They do not like making profit from schools. That is why in Germany education is free for everyone. They treat Indian students same like their own German students.

So, do not worry. Germany free education is a win-win situation. You get a world-class degree for free, and they get a skilled worker for future.

Cost of Studying in Germany for Indian Students

The cost of studying in Germany is free in Public Universities. However, students would be required to pay an administration fee at the start of every year/ semester. This is a negligible amount. The Germans take their education system very seriously and have everything calculated to the last cent.

Every year, according to the prevailing economic conditions as well as the relevant fee structure, every university would request that a monthly sum be provided for the student to facilitate their living expenses in the country as well as for completing his education, this money is deposited in a Blocked Account. This usually varies from state to state and is about €992 a month, which would roughly amount to €11,904  for an entire academic session. This would include their accommodation, living expenses, and even travel pass costs.

Students wanting to apply for financial aid or assistance can apply for various scholarships for studying in Germany and also apply for an education loan to study in Germany. Students can also apply for part-time jobs in Germany and benefit from their noteworthy post-study work options in Germany in place for the benefit of international students.

Cost of Living in Germany for Indian Students

The cost of living in Germany would depend largely on where the student is residing in Germany. If the candidate opts for one of the famous cities of Germany, then the accommodation in Germany could vary greatly and can go as high as €410 per month for a single room accommodation in cities like Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, or even the famous university towns of Heidelberg. These cities do have cheaper options available in terms of Residence Halls for students but being the country with the third-largest International student population, it does have its shortcomings.

In other words, finding a place in residence halls would be a challenge. The idea, hence, to curtail your cost of living in Germany is to either find a university in the lesser-known cities or start early and aim to find a place in one of the cheaper accommodations. The rest of the expenses and overheads are fairly similar across Germany. Adding to the expense of studying in Germany are the mandatory Health Insurance as well as miscellaneous expenses that are uniform.

Do you need to speak German to study in Germany?

Many students are scared and ask, "Can I study in Germany for free only with English?" The answer is YES and NO both. Let me explain it simply.

  1. For Masters Degree (Good News!): If you are planning for Masters, you are lucky. Most public universities in Germany offer English courses for Engineering, Science, and Business. You do not need German language for classes. You can easily find free education in Germany for international students entirely in English medium. You mainly need IELTS or TOEFL score.
  2. For Bachelors Degree (German is Important): If you are asking how to study in germany for free after 12th, it is little bit difficult in English. Most Bachelor degrees in free public colleges are taught in German language. There are very few English courses. So for Bachelors, you usually need B1 or C1 level German certificate.
  3. For Part-Time Jobs (You Need "Survival German"): This is where many Indian students make mistake. Even if your college class is in English, the shopkeeper, bus driver, and landlord will speak German. If you want to find a part-time job to pay your rent, knowing basic German is very necessary. Without language, getting a job is hard.
  4. My Honest Advice: Is education free in Germany in English? Yes. But if you want to be happy and safe there, please learn at least A1 or A2 level German before you fly. It will help you settle down. Plus, if you know a little German, your chance to get Germany free education for Indian students increases because visa officers feel you are serious student

How to Apply for a German Student Visa?

To stay in Germany for more than 90 days as a student, candidates are required to get a residence permit or a student visa for Germany. Candidates would be required to prove to the visa officer that they have finances for one year in a Blocked Account as mentioned previously. The amount would be €992per month or €11,904 per annum.

A residence permit issued to students is valid for a maximum of two years. It needs to be renewed if the duration of the course is longer than the stated two years. Once your university admission letter has reached you and you have successfully applied for a German Student Visa, the next and final step is leaving for Germany to pursue your dreams.
