It's a well-established fact that for moving abroad for studies, jobs or for settling in purposes, Indians are required to take an English proficiency test to prove to the host university, organisation or visa authorities that they are capable of holding a conversation in a complete English-speaking environment. For that reason, Indians have a number of standardised English tests to choose from like - IELTS, TOEFL, PTE and Duolingo. However since all of these exams differ in terms of their acceptance, format, English type and structure, their scores and results delivery, fee, and scoring pattern - it's up to Indian students with which English test they want to go with. It is recommended they choose the one that is accepted by their institution/organisation and the visa authorities.

For that reason, PTE exam is very popular among Indian students since it is accepted by as many as 3900+ institutions in over 70 countries and the visa authorities in many countries for jobs and immigration purposes. So, students don't need to take two different exams f they are taking the PTE test.

The Pearson Test of English or PTE exam is an online exam that needs to be taken by non native speakers of the English language. The PTE exam is accepted by many global best universities like Harvard University, University of Oxford, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

Unlike other English tests, the PTE exam assesses how well you can combine your English speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills by posing integrated skills tasks to the test takers. There are three different types of the PTE exam, i.e. PTE Academic, PTE Core and  PTE UK Visa tests. This exam page provides complete information on PTE Academic exam for Indian students planning to study abroad in 2025 and beyond.

  3. PTE UK Visa Tests

Let us learn about each of these types of PTE tests below.

1. PTE Academic Exam

The three main purposes of taking the PTE Academic Exam are-

Like the PTE Academic test, PTE Core is completely online, but differs in testing only the general speaking, writing, reading and listening skills in the English language.

  2. PTE Home Tests
  • PTE Academic UKVI Test- The PTE Academic UKVI Test is a UK Home Office-approved four-skill Secure English Language Test or SELT. This test is identical to the PTE Academic test. PTE Exam Eligibility Criteria for Indian Students 2025

There is no need to be an expert in the English language to qualify for the PTE exam. The Pearson PTE exam doesn’t test your literary or academic expertise in English - it just evaluates your ability to communicate things effectively in the English language in real-world academic or work settings. The PTE Academic exam, hence, determines whether you'll be able to understand your lectures, discuss with your peers and hold necessary conversations in day to day life in a foreign country when you're out for studying abroad.

PTE exam eligibility criteria for Indian students in 2025 are-

  1. Age Limit- Test takers must be at least 16 years ols and those between 16 to 18 years of age need to show parental consent for taking the PTE exam. There is no upper age limit for the PTE exam.

  3. Nationality: There is no bar on the nationality of the test takers and applicants from any country can take the PTE test.
  4. Bias for Language: The PTE exam does not assess particularly for the British or American accents of the English language. The test is designed for assessing international English, and the AI scoring algorithms are trained with data from around 10,000+ individuals of different nationalities and different languages.

Who is the PTE exam for?

Non-native speakers of the English language who wish to study, work or settle abroad should take the PTE exam. The exam is suitable for non-native test takers who wish to have their exam scores released earlier and test in a completely online setting to prove their proficiency in English for admissions and working abroad purposes.

PTE Academic Syllabus includes three sections -

  1. Part 1 - Speaking & Writing
  2. Part 2- Reading
  3. Part 3- Listening

You get marked on these three sections separately, and you get the PTE Academic total score as well.

There are now 10 types of questions in Part 1, 5 types of questions in Part 2 and 8 types of questions in Part 3 of the exam. You get scores for only 22 question types as the first task of the PTE exam, i.e. Personal Introduction is not a part of scoring. However, it is a crucial aspect of the test as your recorded introduction is shared with the universities of your choice along with your PTE Score Report. Check out the time allowed for each part of the PTE exam below:

PTE Exam Format

How long is the PTE Exam?

Q&A Icon
Commonly asked questions
Q:   Is the scoring pattern changed for PTE exam 2025?
A:

Yes, the PTE scoring pattern has been changed for the year 2025. The exam consists of 52-64 tasks and 20 different question types. Earlier, all these questions in the PTE exam used to be scored solely machines by using strong AI algorithms.

But now, human scoring has been additionally incorporated for a double verification and fairer scoring.

The human scoring is done in two ways for the lived test responses of the PTE Academic Test:

  1. For the anomalies: This is the area where the unusual answers cannot be scored by automation and hence, human expertise is equired.
  2. Task Specific: The "Describe Image" and the "Retell Recture" tasks of the PTE test are also be scored by the human experts now.
Q:   Is there a change in PTE exam duration in 2025?
A:

The PTE exam's duration has reduced from 3 hours to 2 hours. This has been done by reducing the total number of questions previously asked in each section. However, the exam body suggests that this change does not affect the efficiency of the PTE exam and it is still one of the most favoured exams by the universities abroad.

Q:   What is the validity of my PTE Academic score?
A:

Your PTE Academic scores remain valid for two years from the date you took the test. During this time, you can use your PTE score to apply to universities abroad without having to pay any extra fees. However, post the completion of two years of the release of your PTE scores, you will not be able to access your PTE exam result and scores.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   Is the PTE exam very difficult?
A:

PTE exam is based on integrated skills testing (especially in the Speaking and Writing skills) which makes it different from the other English tests.

This means that while other tests like IELTS assess both these skills in different sections using methods (human examiners tests the speaking skills on a different day than the main exam day), the PTE exam assesses both these skills altogether in a single sitting, in 1 single section. Both these skills are assessed in integrated tasks.

This difference in the exam pattern may lead the test takers to believe that the PTE exam is tougher than the other exams. However, the level of difficulty is subjective and depends on the preparation and current proficiency of the test taker in the English language.

Q:   What types of reading passages are featured in the PTE Academic exam?
A:

The PTE Academic exam features diverse academic and factual passages covering subjects like humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences. These passages are used in five different question types: Reading and Writing: Fill in the Blanks, Re-order Paragraphs, Reading: Fill in the Blanks, Multiple-choice, Multiple Answers, and Multiple-choice, Single Answer.

Q:   What are some specific speaking tasks encountered in the PTE exam?
A:

The PTE Academic speaking section assesses language skills through tasks like Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Re-tell Lecture, and Answer Short Question. Additionally, the Personal Introduction is a non-scored task recorded for universities to get to know the candidate.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   Is 1 month enough for preparing for my PTE exam?
A:

Your PTE exam preparation depends upon how consistently you prepare for it. You need to practice daily to polish your English language skills, read articles, and immersive yourself thoroughly into the language to get a better preparation outcome before your exam.

Your total exam preparation time also depends upon your previous knowledge of the language and how good are your basics in English. Remember, good basics are the key to solving any English exam question.

Candidates are advised to prepare for the PTE Academic exam before booking their test slot. Hence, candidates who have appeared for their PTE Academic exam before or who are well prepared for the exam can use the one month for revision and appear for the test. Others would definitely need a more substantial amount of time to be well-versed in the exam.

Q:   How can I know my PTE exam date?
A:

Log into your myPTE account on the Pearson PTE site to check your exam date and confirmation email. You can also view available slots on the website's calendar when scheduling a new test.

Q:   Which ID proof should you carry on the PTE test day?
A:

The choice of ID to be carried to the exam centre on the day of the PTE exam depends on the type of the PTE exam chosen and the place of taking the test.

For a PTE Academic test, if a person is taking the test from outside of his country of citizenship then, he/she will be required to present a valid passport on arriving to the test centre. Only a physical form of the passport is the accepted form of ID across all PTE test centres.

However, if a person is taking the test within the country of their citizenship, they may carry:

  • A national ID card
  • A military identification card
  • A government-issued driver's license (including a photo)

Note that any form of the ID to be carried must be in its physical form and no digital ID will be accepted.

Rescoring the PTE exam?

If candidates are unsatisfied with their PTE Score, they can request a rescore. However, since the PTE Academic is a computer-scored test, the chance of an error is highly minimised. Only spoken responses and open-ended written responses are rescored. Candidates are barred from requesting a rescore if they have already either scheduled another test or sent their score to an institution. In the event the score changes, the new score will replace the previous score and the original score report will be reissued to reflect the new score.

Will the two newly added questions change the score range for the PTE exam?

No, the new questions added to the PTE exam will not change the PTE score chart. The exam will still be scored from 10 to 90 where 10 is the lowest and 90 is highest score. And the score report will include the same overall score from 10 to 90 and a skill score each for Speaking & Writing, Reading and Listening.
