Types of PTE Exams
The PTE exam is categorised into three major types:
- PTE Academic
- PTE Core
- PTE UK Visa Tests
Let us learn about each of these types of PTE tests below.
1. PTE Academic Exam
The three main purposes of taking the PTE Academic (PTE-A) exam are:
- University and college admissions, globally,
- Visa applications to Australia and New Zealand, and
- Professional registrations.
The PTE-A test is for non-native English speakers who wish to work, study or migrate abroad. The exam is completely online (computer-based), takes 2 hours to complete, and its results are typically released in 2 business days. It is accepted by over 3900 universities globally and the Australian and New Zealand governments for all sorts of visa applications and for professional registrations.

2. PTE Core Exam
It is a general English test that is accepted by the Canadian government (IRCC) for immigration purposes under all economic classes, including:
- permanent residency, and
- citizenship.
Like the PTE Academic test, PTE Core is completely online, but differs in testing only the general speaking, writing, reading and listening skills in the English language.
3. PTE UK Visa Tests
These tests are aimed at facilitating the UK visa applications to work and settle in the UK. There are two categories of PTE UK Visa Tests:
- PTE Academic UKVI Test
- PTE Home Tests
Both of these types of tests serve different purposes, as discussed below.
- PTE Academic UKVI Test: The PTE Academic UKVI Test is a UK Home Office-approved four-skill Secure English Language Test (SELT). The test content and format are identical to that of the PTE Academic test, but your score report for the PTE Academic UKVI test would contain a 'Unique Reference Number' (URN) for the UK visa application. The test scores can be used for study and work purposes, as given below.
- For study purposes: accepted for a Student route visa to study below degree-level courses at institutions which are not the 'higher education institutions' in the UK.
- For work purposes: accepted for Skilled Worker Visa route, Innovator visa, Start-up visa and the Minister of Religion visa (Tier 2).
- PTE Home Tests: Three types of PTE Home tests are there -
- PTE Home A1: This test assesses the basic English speaking and listening skills required for your daily life and work in the UK. The test is accepted for spouse visa, parent of a dependent visa, sportsperson visa and Representative of an Overseas Business visa.
- PTE Home A2: This test assesses the basic English speaking and listening skills required for your daily life in the UK. This test should be taken if you wish to extend your spouse visa or 'parent of a dependent' visa.
- PTE Home B1:This test assesses English speaking and listening skills required for your daily life in the UK. The test is the right choice for citizenship and 'Indefinite Leave to Remain' (also called the PR in UK) applications.

PTE Exam Eligibility Criteria for Indian Students 2025
There is no need to be an expert in the English language to qualify for the PTE exam. The Pearson PTE exam doesn’t test your literary or academic expertise in English — it just evaluates your ability to communicate effectively in the English language in real-world academic or work settings. The PTE Academic exam, hence, determines whether you'll be able to understand your lectures, discuss with your peers and hold necessary conversations in day-to-day life in a foreign country when you're out for studying abroad.
The PTE Academic test ensures that you are ready to study abroad in a country where English is the primary medium of instruction among students from global backgrounds.
Still, here are some of the points of the PTE exam eligibility criteria that you need to keep in mind while registering:
- Age Limit:
- There is no minimum or maximum age limit for applicants; however, being at least 16 years old at the time of PTE exam registration is highly recommended.
- If you are between 16 and 18 years old, then you will need to provide parental consent to take the PTE exam to study abroad.
- Specific rules and regulations need to be confirmed with Pearson PTE if you're below 16 years of age.
- Educational Qualifications: While it is not encouraged, but highly recommended, the applicants must have attained their high school education at the time of registration.
- Nationality: There is no bar on the nationality of the test takers and applicants from any country can take the PTE test. The exam is suitable for non-native English speakers who seek to study, live and work abroad where English is the primary language.
- Bias for Language: The PTE exam does not assess particularly for the British or American accents of the English language. The test is designed for assessing international English, and the AI scoring algorithms are trained with data from around 10,000+ individuals of different nationalities and different languages.
Who should take the PTE exam?
Non-native English speakers who wish to study, work or migrate abroad should take the PTE exam. The exam is suitable for non-native test takers who wish to have their exam scores released earlier and test in a completely online setting to prove their proficiency in English for admissions and working abroad purposes.
