Who Needs to Take the dMAT for an MBA in Germany?

According to APS India, the dMAT applies to master's applicants (which includes MBA and Master's in Management applicants) whose undergraduate degree falls under one of these fields:

• Engineering (including Computer Science and IT, per several official-aligned summaries)

• Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics

• Business/Management

Since most Indian MBA aspirants hold an undergraduate degree in Commerce, Business Administration (BBA), or Engineering, a large share of MBA applicants fall directly into the affected category.

Here's who needs to take the dMAT exam:- The dMAT applies if BOTH of these are true:

• Your undergraduate degree is in one of the three affected fields above.

• Your application is for the Summer Semester 2027 Master's intake or later.

If either condition doesn't apply to you, the dMAT requirement does not apply - at least in this introductory phase.

Who is Exempt from the dMAT Exam?

Indian students need not take the dMAT exam under certain conditions. Some of the cases of dMAT exam exemptions are given below.  

1. You completed your APS online registration or shipped your complete physical documents before 29 June 2026.

2. You already hold a valid, issued APS certificate for Germany.

3. You are applying for a bachelor's degree or a PhD program.

4. You are a bachelor's student who hasn't yet completed at least 5 semesters (3-year programme) or 7 semesters (4-year programme).

5. Your undergraduate degree does not fall within the three affected fields.

6. You are participating in officially confirmed university partnership or exchange programs.

7. You're applying through an officially confirmed exchange, double-degree, or university partnership programme (a confirmation letter from your home institution, the German partner institution, or the programme coordinator must be submitted with your APS documents).

8. You are applying for the Winter Semester 2026/27 intake - since the first dMAT results are only available from 12 October 2026, the requirement effectively starts from Summer Semester 2027 onward.

What if your degree is interdisciplinary?

If your undergraduate programme sits between categories - for example, Engineering Management, Business Analytics, Industrial Engineering, Data Science, or Financial Technology - your status will be decided strictly by the official Affected Fields List published by APS India, not by how closely your subject "feels" related to Business or Engineering. dMAT Exam Pattern

The dMAT consists of two modules, a core module and a subject module. Both of these modules are taken back-to-back with a break in between. The test lasts for about 3.5 hours.

2. Missing the registration deadline - With only one test date in the first cycle, a missed window can delay your entire application cycle.

3. Waiting until late in the cycle to check your test-centre availability - since seats are first-come, first-served and cannot be reserved by APS India.

4. Assuming dMAT replaces the GMAT for your target business school - always check the specific programme's own test requirements separately.

5. Assuming a good or bad dMAT score changes your APS outcome - APS India has clarified there's no pass/fail cutoff tied to the APS certificate itself.
