Commonly asked questions
Q:   Is the new SAT exam pattern hard?
A:

SAT includes sets of questions from easy to difficult. Easy questions are usually answered correctly by 90% of the students while hard questions are answered correctly by less than 30% of students. So, if you like reading and more into words then the Reading section will be smooth for you. Similarly, you need to understand the complete pattern and see whether it is difficult for you or not. Whichever section of SAT is difficult for the applicants, they can go ahead and prepare for it first.

  • SAT Digital has smaller reading passages in comparison to the previous version.
  • There is one Math section, instead of two, and all questions can be solves using a calculator which makes the test shorter.

What is SAT Exam?

SAT exam in India is an entrance exam taken by class 11th and 12th students. Digital SAT evaluates written, verbal, analytical and mathematical skills through its RW and Math sections. Each section is scored out of 800 (400 per module), totalling a maximum score of 1600. Apart from this, SAT is a common requirement to apply for undergraduate courses abroad. Some features of (Digital) SAT 2026 are:

  • SAT is 2 hours and 14 hours long with an additional 10-minute break

  • There are eight SAT dates scheduled in 2026.

  • SATs in India are available only on weekends.

  • Indian applicants can take SAT on the Bluebook App downloaded on their personal devices (like iPad, Chromebook, Macbook, etc).

  • SAT cannot be taken on a mobile phone.

  • Since SAT has gone digital, the exam has become adaptive. Difficulty increases or decreases based on the performance on the first module of each section.

  • There is no negative marking for incorrect or unanswered questions on the SATs.

Full Form of SAT

The full form of SAT was Scholastic Assessment Test until two years back. Four years back, it was known as the Scholastic Aptitude Test, but now it is referred to as the SAT. College Board dropped the meaning associated with each letter because it did not want to test what the applicants had gained over time. They wanted to test the applicants on the skills that they acquired in school. So, the full form of SAT was dropped. At present, there is no SAT full form, and applicants should not get confused about it.

Types of SAT Exam

Different types of SAT exam variants can be taken up by 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th graders. It is known as PSAT exam (or Preliminary SAT). The PSAT is designed in the same format as SAT but based on the level of applicants, the difficulty is set. There are three types of PSAT:

  1. PSAT 8/9: A foundation-building test for 8th and 9th graders that uses simpler content to track high school readiness.
  2. PSAT 10: A mid-high school check-in for sophomores to gauge college readiness, though it doesn't count toward scholarships.
  3. PSAT/NMSQT: A high-stakes practice test for 10th and 11th graders that doubles as a qualifying exam for National Merit Scholarships.

All three types of SAT test applicants on same pattern, syllabus, scoring and even duration.

SAT Exam 2026 FAQs

Still, have more queries regarding the SAT exam? Check out the detailed SAT FAQs in the following section which covers more information for the exam:

Q:   Is SAT exam conducted only for admission to American universities?
A:

No, SAT exam is not only for US universities, in fact some universities in Canada, Italy, UK, India and Singapore also  accept SAT scores for UG admissions. Applicants applying for admissions abroad must check the requirements for SAT, aim for the SAT cutoff score accordingly and apply for admisisons.

Q:   What is the importance of SAT exam?
A:

SAT is an important deciding factor in considering admissions to universities abroad at large. Importance of SAT can be understood this way:

  • It helps admission committee understand an applicant's potential academically, and offer or not offer him admission.
  • Higher the SAT score, higher is the possibility of admissions (keeping other things in check like documentation, good moral character, etc.).
  • Better scope for getting a scholarship to support education abroad if scored well on SAT.
  • Based on SAT scores, admission committees can also assess an applicant's level of critical thinking, time management skills including problem solving skills.

Thus, these reasons are essential to determine what is the importance of SAT exam scores for admissions.

Q:   What to do if SAT exam fee shows error of not submitted but applicants get transaction message?
A:

Probably the money paid for SAT registration was processed and is no longer available for recovery. However, it is possible that the registration process is still ongoing and the applicant's payment has not been fully processed. It is recommended that the applicants go and check the status of their registration and contact College Board that administers the SAT for further assistance. College Board may be able to the student with information about the status of their payment and registration. Also if the SAT fee is deducted from the bank, it is likely that the bank credits the amount back in 2-3 working days also. Thus, applicants just need to check.

Q:   What is SAT score validity?
A:

The SAT score is valid for 5 years from the date of receiving SAT exam result. You may have to pay extra if you want College Board to share your SAT scores with universities you are applying to. This for later years admission applications. Also if you plan to apply in future, you can use your SAT scores if they have not exceeded the 5-year mark.

Q:   What to keep in mind to score good in SAT?
A:

Its essential to understand that what is the meaning of 'good SAT score' if it is based on the minimum requirements set by the university then a certain aim has to be set, but if it is more towards a personal goal then the targetting strategy would be different. In order to score good, the students shall prepare themselves of how they wish to plan their studies and assess their previous knowledge first and then working on the SAT syllabus. There is no one way of scoring good on SAT, but definitely the effort and practice of the applicant would pay off.

Q:   What is PSAT? How it is different from SAT test?
A:

PSAT or Preliminary SAT is more like a practice test that candidates give to check their readiness for the SAT exam. The PSAT exam takes place once a year in October. Candidates can check the nearby school where they can register for the PSAT. The cost for taking PSAT is $17 (INR 1233) approximately. Also, it is scored out of 1520, unlike the SAT test that is scored out of 1600. Usually, students in class 9th or class 10th give the PSAT. Students in class 11th also give PSAT if they are not planning to attempt the SAT exam in 11th standard. It tests the problem-solving skills in three areas: Math, Writing, and Critical Reading.

Q:   How do universities abroad use SAT for admissions?
A:

There are multiple factors that help universities abroad make decisions about admissions for international students using SAT. Some of the key factors include:

  • SAT score of the applicant versus the applicant pool score.
  • Syncing SAT score with previous adacemic background.
  • Based on SAT score assess applicant's analytical and problem solving skills (mentioned on SAT score report).
  • Finally, if there is scope for offering financial aid, SAT scores may be one of the deciding factors.

Thus, these are the uses of SAT at an international level for offering admissions to applicants.

Q:   What is a good SAT score?
A:

An average SAT exam score is around 1000 for 2023 as per College Board. Thus, anything above 1000 and touching 1200 is considered a good SAT score. The maximum anyone can score on the SAT is the perfect score of 1600. Since applicants receive scaled scores, they should have some understanding of SAT scaled scores and percentiles.

For a detailed understanding, check out What is a good SAT Score?

Q:   Is SAT harder than JEE?
A:

SAT and JEE are two different exams which solve different purposes.

  • While SAT tests applicant's aptitude for English, Maths and Social Science, JEE tests applicants skills for Physics, Chemistry and Maths.
  • Both JEE and SAT are conducted online, but only SAT is computer adaptive.
  • SAT is accepted for admissions abroad for all types of UG courses irrespective of the fields of study. Whereas, JEE is designed especially for undergrad engineering students
  • JEE is conducted in two phases - JEE Mains and JEE Advanced. Whereas there is just one SAT exam and not divided into phases.
  • While JEE results release in a month's time, SAT exam results release with 2 weeks time.

SAT is still easier than JEE because, it is computer adaptive, secondly, it tests applicants irrespective of the number of candidates appearing for the exam. The stress level of SAT applicants lower than JEE applicants any day.

Q:   Can I take SAT even if I haven’t studied in an English-medium school?
A:

Yes, even if students have not studied in an English-medium school, they can still take the SAT exam. The SAT exam can be taken if it is mandatory for submission as a standardised test score. In case, the universities do not require it, taking SAT exam can be skipped.

Q:   Why are Indian students preferring SAT over ACT?
A:

While both SAT and ACT solve a similar purpose of understanding an undergraduate's readiness for college admissions, both are designed differently and tested differently. Understand the key difference to know which one is easier - SAT or ACT from the section below:

  • SAT is a digital exam, whereas ACT is tested on paper plus availability of digital format is meagre.
  • SAT is 2 hours 14 minutes, ACT is 2 hours 55 minutes long.
  • There are just two sections on SAT - Reading + Writing & Maths, ACT on the other hand has four sections - English, Reading, Science and Maths.
  • There is an optional writing paper on ACT, while SAT has scrapped the essay paper.
  • There is an inbuilt calculator for Digital SAT, however, there is no such provision on ACT.
  • Free prep is available for SAT applicants, but not for ACT applicants.

Thus, it is up to the applicants to choose which one is a more suitable option for them - SAT or ACT and apply and prepare accordingly. For more details check - Which one is easier - SAT or ACT?
