Student visa for Germany: Step-by-Step Guide for 2026-27

If you ask Indian students who are planning to study in Germany, many will say that getting the German student visa took more time than they thought. Some students even had to delay their plans because they did not start the visa process early. 

Getting a German student visa is very simple if you follow the steps. You need an admission letter from a German university. Most Indian students also need an APS certificate now to prove their school documents are real. After that, you must open a Blocked Account with an amount of 11,904 Euro (around 13 Lakhs) to show you have enough money. Then, you book an appointment at the German Embassy or consulate.

If you are still waiting for your admission letter, you can apply for a German Student Applicant Visa. This is a Prospective Student Visa that lets you go to Germany for up to 9 months to finish your application or take entrance exams.

Is the visa free? Not for everyone. For a normal degree, the visa fee is 75 Euro (around 6,800 rupees). But there is good news: some short-term exchange students or scholarship holders (like DAAD) can get a free visa under new rules.

Do you need IELTS? Most of the time, yes, if your course is in English. You usually need a 6.0 or 6.5 band. But you can study in Germany without IELTS if you have a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter.

Types of German Student Visas for Indian Students 

Germany offers different visas based on the student's current admission status and length of stay:

• Visum zu Studienzwecken (German Student Visa): For those who have already been accepted by a German university.

• Visum zur Studienbewerbung (Student Applicant Visa): For those who are still awaiting an admission letter or need to be in Germany to apply.

• National Visa: Intended for long-term stays (study programs).

• Schengen Visa: For short-term stays (up to 3 months) such as language courses or prep studies. Note: This visa cannot be extended.

Checklist for German Student Visa

• Valid passport
• Copy of your passport’s information page (A4 size copy)

• A declaration stating the information provided is true and complete information
• Cover Letter explaining the reason for your visa application. You may be required to submit a German translation of this document.
• Letter of Admission from a German University

Germany Blocked Account (Sperrkonto) Requirements 2026

For the 2026 academic year, the German Federal Foreign Office has maintained the blocked account amount at €11,904. This is based on the Bafög rate and is designed to cover your first year of living expenses. This minimum balance covers your first year of cost of living in Germany for your first year. For 2026, the monthly withdrawal limit is €992.

All Indian students must use the Consular Services Portal (CSP). This digital system allows for pre-screening of documents, which significantly reduces visa rejection rates.

1. Digital Upload: Upload your APS, Admission Letter, and Proof of Funds.

3. Appointment Booking: Only after digital approval will you receive a link to book your VFS appointment.

Step-by-Step: Digital German Student Visa Process 2026

The visa process for Indian students is now fully digitalized through the Consular Services Portal (CSP). This 5-step process ensures your documents are pre-screened before you ever visit a VFS centre.

1. Step 1: Register on the Consular Services Portal (CSP)
   Create an account at digital.diplo.de. Select "Visa for Study Purposes" and your residence (India) to see the specific requirements for your local mission (New Delhi, Mumbai, etc.).
2. Step 2: Digital Document Upload & VIDEX

   Complete the VIDEX application form online. You must upload high-quality scans of your APS Certificate, University Admission Letter, and Blocked Account Confirmation. The system will alert you if a mandatory document is missing.

3. Step 3: Online Review (Pre-Approval)

   Visa officers will conduct a pre-screening of your digital application. If corrections are needed, you will receive a notification via the portal. Once approved, you will be cleared to book your in-person appointment.

4. Step 4: VFS Global Appointment

   After CSP approval, book your slot at a VFS Global Visa Application Centre. You will pay the service fee (approx. ₹900) and attend to provide your biometrics and submit your physical passport.

5. Step 5: Passport Collection

   Once a decision is made (usually within 5–25 days), you will be notified to collect your passport or have it couriered. Remember, your initial visa is valid for 3-6 months; you must apply for a Residence Permit after arriving in Germany.

Germany Student Visa Fees & Processing Time (VFS India)

A German student visa would cost students around €75. The processing time could take up to 25 days if all your documents are in order. A lot of times applicants are required to provide more/additional documents. For such cases, the processing time for the German Student Visa could go up to 12 weeks. Candidates looking to apply for a Residence Permit on arrival to Germany would have to pay up to €110. It can take a long time to be issued, which is anywhere between 8 to 12 weeks. Since this roughly translates to 3 months, international students are advised to apply as early as possible.

How to Apply for a German Student Visa Process for Indian Students (2026)

Indian students are required to follow a process while applying for a German student visa. The process has to be done through the Consular Services Portal (CSP) before going for your VFS appointment.

1. Start your application on the CSP Portal

• Go to Consular Services Portal (https://digital.diplo.de) and create an account with your email ID and password.
• Choose “Visa” then select “Study Purposes and Seeking a University Place” and choose India as your country. It will take you to your VFS region page.

2. Fill out the Entry Form

This is first questionnaire where you need to give details like:

• Do you have a university admission letter?
• Are you going for a Studienkolleg or German language course?
• How will you fund your studies? (choose Blocked Account)
• Do you have APS certificate? (mandatory for Indian students)
• Language proof like IELTS, TOEFL or waiver from university.

3. Complete the VIDEX Application Form

• Personal details like name, date of birth, marital status, parents’ names
• Contact details like Indian address, email, phone number)
• Passport details like number, issue date, expiry date
• Travel details like purpose: study, arrival date before classes start
• Financial proof (blocked account)
• University or German contact address
• Health and legal questions (mostly No for students)

4. Upload required documents

Upload documents like a Valid passport, APS certificate, University admission letter, Letter of motivation, CV, Language test results, Blocked account confirmation, and other requisite. 

5. Pay the CSP service fee

Pay INR 900 on the portal. Download and keep the receipt. This payment is compulsory to activate your application and continue to the next step.

The validity of a German student visa is 3 to 6 months. Post this, after completing all the requirements, you can apply for a German residence permit. Then after that the German visa will be valid for 1 to 3 years. 

Germany Visa Application Centres in India

VFS Global manages German Visa Application Centres across India for the 2026 intake.
