What is a Letter of Recommendation?

A Letter of Recommendation (LOR) is a formal document written by a recommender about your skills, and achievements, given to the admissions committee. It can be academic or professional LOR, but it must be written in a formal tone, with the examples, to base the details about you. If you are applying to the UK universities, your recommender needs to follow the LOR format for UK, as given by the university. Foreign universities generally ask the applicants to provide two to three letters of recommendation (LORs), along with other important documents such as a statement of purpose (SOP), essay, resume, and financial documents. In the case of UK universities, two LORs are required for the application process. These LORs can be either academic LORs or LORs from the professional front. Irrespective of the type of LOR for UK, the document should demonstrate the applicant’s eligibility or suitability for the program/ course that he is applying for. The recommender needs to showcase strong support for the applicant’s candidature, thereby creating a favourable impression of the applicant.

LOR for UK: What to include in a LOR?

Before we get into what to include in your LORs, let us review the format of a LOR. There are no specific LOR format for Master’s in UK, concerning length, word limit, and formatting. However, in general, it is advised that the LOR for UK universities should not exceed one page in length. The letter should be written on the official letterhead of the school, college, or firm that the recommender is associated with, and it should contain the referee’s contact details.

The LOR for UK study visa must begin with a brief introduction of the referee and his/her relationship with the applicant. The recommender should highlight the applicant’s strengths and skills, with proper instances, and mention where they witnessed you performing or showcasing those skills or strengths. Instances such as discussions, tutorials or coursework can be discussed to highlight and support the attributes. LOR for UK: Picking the Right Recommender

More importantly, selecting the correct recommenders for writing a LOR is as important as the format and content. The applicant must choose the right recommender who has worked with him closely as they can offer a detailed insight into the personality, skills, and work of the candidate. After making a selection of the referees, you must inform them of your application and document submission deadlines. It is advisable to organize a prior meeting with the recommender so that you will have time to discuss the letter if you plan on writing it. Ideally, the LOR for Master’s in UK should be written by the recommenders themselves to maintain the authenticity of the drafts. However, in some cases, the referees prefer the applicant to draft the initial copy of the LOR and later, the referees refine it by adding their inputs. Undergraduate LOR for UK

Most UK universities process undergraduate admissions through the Universities and Colleges Admission Services (UCAS) portal. Hence, supplementary documents like personal statements, recommendation letters, or resumes are uploaded on the portal. At least one letter of recommendation is required for UG courses or a maximum of two that can be written by a subject teacher, school tutor, head teacher, school counsellor, or the Principal. In case, two LORs are required, at least one LOR for UK should be from the school counsellor and the other can be from a subject teacher.

LOR format for Masters in UK

UK universities require two LORs for Master’s programs. Depending upon the department and university, applicants are required to provide academic and/or professional LORs.
