What Exams Are Required to Study in Canada?

Simply put, Canadian entrance exams can be distinguished as academic tests and language tests. The language tests determine the English language proficiency of students, whereas, the academic test scores are required to know the knowledge of students in various areas. 1. IELTS

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It is one of the exams required to study in Canada. In other words, it is a widely accepted test and evaluates the language proficiency of students. It is accepted in most study-abroad destinations like the USA, UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. The English language skills of students are tested in four key areas: Writing, Reading, Speaking and Listening.

6.5 is the generally accepted overall score and 6 per section of IELTS at Canadian Universities. There are two types of IELTS exams: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. The Speaking and Listening sections are the same, however, the reading and writing sections are different.

2. TOEFL

TOEFL is one of the major language proficiency exams that a student needs to take in order to take admission into Canadian universities. It is in fact, one of the widely recognized exams required to study in Canada.







TOEFL tests the reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills of the test-takers. Tier I universities in Canada may require a TOEFL score of 110 and above. However, some courses in Canada in Tier I and Tier II universities may require a TOEFL score of 80-90 and above.

3. GRE

One of the other exams to study in Canada is the GRE or Graduate Record Examination. It is one of the most popular graduate exams for students who want to pursue graduate studies abroad. This test helps universities or colleges to measure the ability of applicants for advanced education. GRE is a standardized test for admission requirements for many graduate schools in the US, Canada, and many other countries.

GRE General Test has been developed to evaluate verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills that are not related to any specific field of study. On the other hand, the GRE subject test weighs a student's knowledge in a particular subject. Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology are the subjects covered in the GRE Subject Test. 

4. GMAT

GMAT is also one of the exams required to study in Canada. It is a computer adaptive test that evaluates the student’s analytical writing, quantitative, verbal and reading skills in standard written English. GMAT can be taken to gain admission into graduate management programs like an MBA.

To gain admission to good business schools in Canada, students need a score of around 600-650 on the GMAT. However, to gain admission to top universities like McGill University, students are required to have a GMAT score of 650-690. In all, the average GMAT score that is required to gain admission in Canada should be 550+.

5. PTE

Recently, Canadian universities have introduced the PTE or Pearson Test of English as a form of examination for non-native English speakers. However, before applying for PTE, students are required to verify the status of this exam from the university in which they are applying. PTE tests the reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills of the students. PTE is designed in such a way that every question usually tests two skills together, like listening and reading and reading and speaking.

The average PTE score required to study Engineering in Canadian universities is above 55. In order to take admission into Canadian universities that offer MS and MBA courses, students must have a PTE score between 55 to 70.

6. CAEL

CAEL stands for Canadian Academic English Language. It is a popular English Language proficiency test used by IRCC to assess the proficiency of international students. This standardized test is a good alternative to IELTS, TOEFL and other English proficiency exams. From reading articles to writing brief essays, CAEL Canada test takers do all the activities of a first-year Canadian university or college classroom.

Hi Neha, mostly universities ask for IELTS score apart from the GMAT for giving admission to MBA courses. IELTS score is used to prove English language proficiency.
