Commonly asked questions
Q:   What is PTE exam for?
A:

The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is a high-stakes, computer-based English proficiency exam used primarily to unlock opportunities for global education, career advancement and immigration. Because it is faster exam that uses AI-driven, unbiased scoring, many Indians prefer it over traditional tests like IELTS and TOEFL.

The PTE exam tests your academic English proficiency to convey to the university about your readiness of taking higher education in a foreign teaching environment. The test is also accepted for all visa applications in Australia and New Zealand, and for select visas in the UK and Canada.

Q:   Is PTE easier than IELTS?
A:

No, both exams are not easier than the other one. It only depends on the examinee's confidence and command over the English language. Also, it depends on the person's choice of examination. Pearson Test of English or PTE follows a scoring system done by AI, which is unbiased. Also, the test results are given within 48 hours of the examination. IELTS is conducted through human interaction, mainly in the speaking part of the examination. IELTS is the traditional way of testing your English language proficiency. PTE is technologically advanced, with the usage of AI, which is impartial.

Q:   Is the PTE Academic score valid for immigration purposes?
A:

Yes PTE Academic accepted by Australia, New Zealand, and few others for immigration. You must check score requirement for your visa. So PTE is good for immigration purposes all over the world.

Q:   Which changes were implemented to the PTE exam recently?
A:

The major changes incorporated in the PTE exam are given below-

What is PTE Exam?

PTE is a fully computer-based English proficiency exam, which evaluates the speaking, writing, reading and listening skills of non-native English speakers. The scores of the PTE exam can be used by Indian students to prove their proficiency in English language to universities and visa authorities abroad in top English-speaking countries in the world. The exam is owned, developed and conducted globally by Pearson PLC Group - which is a British multinational education and assessment company headquartered in London.

Which PTE Test Should Indian Students Take to Study Abroad?

Indian students should take the PTE Academic exam to study abroad. While PTE Exam and PTE Academic Exam are used interchangeably among students, PTE Academic is one of the versions of the exam.

The PTE exam is famous for delivering faster results, within 48 hours of taking the test, without any human bias in the scoring process. It is accepted by almost all universities in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and most of the universities in the USA.

Here are the other unique features of the PTE exam apart from the above given ones-

  • It has AI-powered, unbiased scoring
  • It evaluates the different language skills such as - reading, writing, speaking and listening, together by means of its integrated-skills tasks, rather than one by one in isolation
  • Each of the above skills are graded on the Global Scale of English from 10 to 90. The overall score is calculated from your performance across all test questions rather than being an average of your communicative skills.
  • As a result of the above feature, answering a question in one section can impact your score in another section
  • The whole of the test takes only 2 hours in a single sitting, unlike IELTS, in which the Speaking section is tested on a separate day. There are many more differences between IELTS and PTE Exams
  • PTE exam can be booked online as little as 24 to 48 hours in advance, that too without any extra/late fees
  • Test dates are available almost every day
  • Regional accents usually don't affect your speaking scores, as long as your response is correct and there has been no technical issue in recording your response. PTE's AI-scoring algorithm is trained over millions of human-rated responses from students, including over 400,000 spoken responses for speech recognition and 50,000+ essays for writing.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   What is the exam pattern for PTE in 2026?
A:

PTE exam, in 2026, continues to be a 2-hour-long computer-based test that needs to be taken at an authorised test centre. PTE assesses English proficiency of the test takers on the basis of 4 key skills - Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. It comprises 22 types of integrated skills tasks that focus on real-life communication. Scoring is done by a trained AI algorithm, where only certain tasks are also checked by human experts. The main change in the exam pattern that the test takers will come around are in the number of questions for each task type - as the same has been changed since the addition of two new tasks back in 2025. Check PTE exam pattern to know how many questions for each type are there on the exam.

Q:   What is the total duration of the PTE exam?
A:

As per the durations described by the Pearson PTE for each section of the exam, the minimum total duration of the PTE exam comes to around 2 hours and 10 minutes. But the officials from Pearson often stress on the fact that test takers with often a good practice tend to complete the test in two hours only.

Q:   Will the addition of two new question types change the duration of the PTE exam?
A:

As per the exam conducting body, Pearson PTE, the overall length of the PTE exam will continue to remain the same, i.e. 2 hours even after the addition of two new types of tasks. This is done by adjusting the length and number of other tasks in the PTE exam accordingly.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   Is the PTE exam very difficult?
A:

PTE exam is based on integrated skills testing (especially in the Speaking and Writing skills) which makes it different from the other English tests.

This means that while other tests like IELTS assess both these skills in different sections using methods (human examiners tests the speaking skills on a different day than the main exam day), the PTE exam assesses both these skills altogether in a single sitting, in 1 single section. Both these skills are assessed in integrated tasks.

This difference in the exam pattern may lead the test takers to believe that the PTE exam is tougher than the other exams. However, the level of difficulty is subjective and depends on the preparation and current proficiency of the test taker in the English language.

Q:   What are some specific speaking tasks encountered in the PTE exam?
A:

PTE Academic speaking section assesses language skills through tasks like Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Re-tell Lecture, and Answer Short Question. Personal Introduction is not scored but recorded for universities to get to know the candidate.

Q:   What types of writing tasks are included in the PTE Academic exam?
A:

PTE exam has only two tasks in writing: Summarize Written Text (write one sentence summary) and Write Essay (200-300 words). Both PTE tasks check grammar, ideas, and simple writing skills.

Q:   How many questions are there in each section of the PTE exam?
A:

The total questions in PTE-A exam are distributed among Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3.

Rescoring the PTE exam?

If candidates are unsatisfied with their PTE Score, they can request a rescore. However, since the PTE Academic is a computer-scored test, the chance of an error is highly minimised. Only spoken responses and open-ended written responses are rescored. Candidates are barred from requesting a rescore if they have already either scheduled another test or sent their score to an institution. In the event the score changes, the new score will replace the previous score and the original score report will be reissued to reflect the new score.

Will the two newly added questions change the score range for the PTE exam?

No, the new questions added to the PTE exam will not change the PTE score chart. The exam will still be scored from 10 to 90 where 10 is the lowest and 90 is highest score. And the score report will include the same overall score from 10 to 90 and a skill score each for Speaking & Writing, Reading and Listening.
