No, PTE and IELTS are different exams. These are two different English proficiency exams that Indian students must take to study abroad. Both these exams differ in terms of their pattern, structure, question types, intent, scoring, results delivery, scoring scale, acceptance and popularity. However, fees for IELTS exam is going to become INR 19,000 starting end of March 2026, while the PTE exam's new and updated fees for 2026 is INR 18,900.

The main difference lies in their purpose and target audience. PTE Academic is for global university study and professional registration. PTE Core is for Canadian immigration (PR and citizenship). PTE Academic UKVI is identical to Academic but specifically required for UK visas and immigration.

PTE Academic is required to study degree-level and above courses abroad, while the PTE Academic UKVI is for below-degree-level courses

Yes. PTE slots can be booked on shorter notice of up to 24 hours in advance. While IELTS exam be booked up to 2-4 days in advance, subject to the availability of slots. 

No. As an Indian citizen, you can only present a physical copy of a valid passport on the day of your PTE exam. A passport is required, whether or not you're applying from outside or inside India. 

The minimum age of the PTE test takers should be 16 at the time of application. However applicants aged between 16 and 18 are required to submit a parent's consent form to be able to sit in the test.

To study in UK, minimum CEFR level required for acquiring a General Study Visa (formerly the Tier 4 visa) is B1. It is equivalent to a PTE score 43 or higher in each section.

As of now there is no bar on the number of attempts allowed to take the PTE exam. Test takers can retake the exam as many times they want to improve their score. However, there are two conditions associated with the allowed retakes. These are-

1. A new PTE exam slot must be booked only after the result of previous attempt is released.
2. Only 12 attempts are allowed in a given 12 months window. If you happen to have exhausted all these 12 attempts for the concerned 12 months window and want another attempt in the same window, then you'll have to submit an application for the same.

Yes. The PTE exam slots are available on weekends in India. But they tend to fill out fast, weeks in advance. So, you need to be careful and book in advance.

Booking a PTE exam slot at least 2 to 3 weeks ahead is generally recommended. This will give you enough time to cancel/reschedule and get a refund if your plan happens to change, in due time. Also, you may get your desired date and time slot when you book in advance.

You cannot book the PTE exam slot for the same day. But you can book a PTE exam slot up to 24 hours before the test time.

You can change/reschedule your PTE exam date for a maximum of 6 times. You must have at least 14 days left for your PTE exam to make changes to your test date. If there are lesser than 14 days left, you can no longer change or reschedule your test.

At this point, you can only cancel your PTE test appointment and book another one. Cancellation charges may apply depending on the number of days left for your exam on the date of cancellation.

Generally it is recommended to take the PTE exam at Pearson-authorised test centres only as these test centres - 

• are equipped with superior and standardised testing environments,  
• have dedicated professional staff, and
• provide better technical support if a glitch occurs.

Yes, all authorised PTE test centres provide secure locker facilities to store your personal belongings during the exam. You must keep all your belonging in the locker assigned to you before entering the exam room. 

There is no way to change your PTE test centre directly after booking. In order to change, you must cancel your current test appointment and book a new test at your desired new location.

Students can pay the PTE exam booking fees either by using a debit card (only Visa® or Master Card®) or credit card (JCB®, Visa®, Master Card® or American Express®). Payment can also be made using a acrd registered on some other name, for example - from a parent's credit card. Payments through PayPal are not accepted. 

If you reschedule more than 14 days before exam, it is Free. The rescheduling between 7-14 days can cost you pay 50% fee. If less than 7 days, you lose full money, no refund.

PTE exam, in 2026, continues to be a 2-hour-long computer-based test that needs to be taken at an authorised test centre. PTE assesses English proficiency of the test takers on the basis of 4 key skills - Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. It comprises 22 types of integrated skills tasks that focus on real-life communication. Scoring is done by a trained AI algorithm, where only certain tasks are also checked by human experts. The main change in the exam pattern that the test takers will come around are in the number of questions for each task type - as the same has been changed since the addition of two new tasks back in 2025. As per the durations described by the Pearson PTE for each section of the exam, the minimum total duration of the PTE exam comes to around 2 hours and 10 minutes. But the officials from Pearson often stress on the fact that test takers with often a good practice tend to complete the test in two hours only. 

As per the exam conducting body, Pearson PTE, the overall length of the PTE exam will continue to remain the same, i.e. 2 hours even after the addition of two new types of tasks. This is done by adjusting the length and number of other tasks in the PTE exam accordingly. 

PTE exam is based on integrated skills testing (especially in the Speaking and Writing skills) which makes it different from the other English tests.

This means that while other tests like IELTS assess both these skills in different sections using methods (human examiners tests the speaking skills on a different day than the main exam day), the PTE exam assesses both these skills altogether in a single sitting, in 1 single section. Both these skills are assessed in integrated tasks. 

This difference in the exam pattern may lead the test takers to believe that the PTE exam is tougher than the other exams. However, the level of difficulty is subjective and depends on the preparation and current proficiency of the test taker in the English language. 

PTE Academic speaking section assesses language skills through tasks like Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Re-tell Lecture, and Answer Short Question. Personal Introduction is not scored but recorded for universities to get to know the candidate. 

PTE exam has only two tasks in writing: Summarize Written Text (write one sentence summary) and Write Essay (200-300 words). Both PTE tasks check grammar, ideas, and simple writing skills.

The total questions in PTE-A exam are distributed among Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3.

Yes, you can book the PTE test before 2 days of taking the exam. Not only that, the PTE exam can be booked as late as 24 hours before the chosen exam slot.  

On your PTE Academic test day, bring a valid, original, unexpired ID, preferably your passport. Some centers may accept other government IDs, so check the official website for alternatives.

The PTE Academic is valid for 2 years, but some immigration programs, like Australian PR, may accept scores up to 3 years old if they were valid when you received your visa invitation.

A single PTE exam can be rescheduled as many as 6 times. After a single PTE exam has been rescheduled 6 times, the option of recheduling the exam will itself disappear from the test taker's dashboard.

To reschedule the PTE test, the test takers need to visit their My PTE account at least 14 days before appearing for the test and click on the "reschedule" button appearing below their PTE exam slot. Candidates will not be charged any rescheduling fee if they choose to reschedule their PTE exam successfully 14 days before the day of exam.     

Note that if you fail to apply for rescheduling of your PTE test at least 14 days ahead of your exam, you will have no option of rescheduling the test. In that case, candidates will have to "cancel" their PTE test and rebook it.  

As per students who have taken the PTE exam, the Summarize Spoken Text, Write from Dictation, Highlight Incorrect Words, Re-order Paragraphs, Reading Fill in the Blanks, Repeat Sentence, and Essay Writing are frequently cited as challenging due to their integrated skills testing and time constraints. However, individual strengths and weaknesses determine which task is perceived as the most difficult.

Ideally you must spend at least 2-3 hours daily on studying for the PTE exam for a period of 2-3 months. It is recommended that use only the official preparation materials such as books, sample papers, taster test and mock tests. By the medium of taking the mock tests - you can get to know about the areas for improvement and work on them in due time.

Whether through self-study or with the help of extra classes, candidates are always advised to give in their best during the examination. Referring to official PTE Study Material, solving multiple PTE Practice Papers and revising the PTE Syllabus is a good start.

Yes. The PTE exam can be aced without joining any coaching classes. You can get good scores on the PTE by studying at home at your own pace. You need to study consistently and practice performing all question types by the medium of mock tests and sample tests. You can also refer to sample answers to learn how should you frame the answers - but don't learn or memorise a single answer template for all questions.    

You can check the Pearson PTE Academic Practice Test Plus - Volume 1 and 2 books to access the PTE sample papers. These books include 4 complete practice tests with authentic questions, each of which comes with a tip to answer that question. To go beyond the conventional practice methods, you can find the Scored Practice Tests offered by Pearson. These tests simulate the real PTE test and your responses are scored by the similar AI algorithm as is used in exam.

Some free preparation resources of the Pearson's PTE exam provide PDFs of the sample questions with answers. However, if students want to practice live and need a score on how they performed, they must take the PTE mock tests- which are paid.   

The highest achievable overall score in the PTE Academic exam is 90. The scoring scale ranges from 10 to 90, with 90 representing expert English proficiency.

The reading passages vary in difficulty but generally reflect academic and factual texts you might encounter in university settings. The vocabulary level is challenging but manageable with good reading comprehension skills and a strong foundation in academic English.

Yes. A 75 PTE score falls under the 'Very Good' category. A PTE 75 score is equivalent to IELTS 7.5 - 8.0 band score.
