What are Prefixes and suffixes?

Both suffixes and prefixes are added to a root word, which is - "base form of word that carries the core meaning"; for e.g. - "happy"
Prefixes add at beginning of root word to change its meaning. For e.g. - "un-" is prefix in unhappy, which changes its meaning to "not happy".
Suffixes add to end of a word to alter its form or function. For e.g. "-ness" is suffix in happiness, changing the root word into noun.

  • Prefixes can create irregular meanings or alter spellings of root words in unexpected ways. For eg., - prefix "in-" typically means "not", but in "incredible," it does not simply negate the meaning but intensifies it.
  • In some cases, a word may appear to be modified by a prefix or suffix but retain its original meaning, such as - "enlarge" where "en-" doesn't dramatically change the meaning but intensifies it.
