What is the Biggest Change in the TOEFL 2026 Speaking Section?

The biggest change is in the speaking section. A new Listen & Repeat question type has been introduced. In this test, takers will hear 7 sentences, and they have to repeat them exactly.

You get zero preparation time. There is no time to think. In the old TOEFL, you had time to plan. Now, as soon as you hear the beep, you must start speaking.

You have to speak for 45 seconds immediately. You speak to an AI avatar that shows human-like gestures. It feels like a real interview.

My advice is simple. Practice speaking on random topics every day. Start speaking without thinking too much.

How Difficult is the 8 to 10 Second Listening Response Time?

This is very important for preparation. There is a question called ‘Choose a Response’. You get only 8 to 10 seconds to answer.

Ten seconds feels very short in the exam. Your mind hardly gets time to think. Many students panic at this point.

You must practice with a real timer every day. Your response should become automatic. This is the biggest challenge in the listening section.

Can I Identify Unscored Questions in TOEFL 2026?

No, you cannot. And that is the purpose. In reading, 15 out of 50 questions are unscored. In listening, 12 out of 47 are unscored. They look exactly like normal questions. They can appear anywhere.

Many students waste time trying to guess them. Do not do this. It is impossible. Even a very difficult question may be unscored. You will never know. So treat every question as important.

What Are the New TOEFL 2026 Writing Task Types?

There are two new writing tasks. First is email writing. You get only seven minutes. You must write a proper formal or semi-formal email. Since it is new, you should practice the format.

Second is ‘Build the Sentence’. You get jumbled words. Some extra words are also given. You must remove the unwanted words and make a correct sentence.

For this task, strong grammar is very important. You get six to eight minutes.

What Can I Bring to the TOEFL Test Center?

You can bring only your passport. The name must match your registration exactly. Everything else goes into a locker. No watch. No water bottle. No pen. Nothing.

Many students feel surprised when they are asked to remove their watches. ETS gives three sheets of scratch paper. That is all you can use. One can only ask for more once they are filled.

Are Bathroom Breaks Allowed During the TOEFL Exam?

No. There are no breaks. The test runs for 90 minutes without stopping. You cannot leave your seat. They do not even provide water.

So use the bathroom before entering the test room. Drink some water before the test. But do not drink too much.

What Is the Best Timing Strategy for the TOEFL Reading Section?

Reading passages are now about 200 words. Earlier, they were much longer. This is good news. It is easier than IELTS and old TOEFL.

But you get sectional timing, not timing for each passage. If you answer easy questions quickly, you save time for hard ones. Do not spend the same time on every question. Use your time wisely.

How Does the Adaptive Testing System Work in TOEFL exam?

The test becomes harder when you perform well. If you do well at the start, the system gives you more difficult questions. This helps find your highest level.

Different students get different questions. At higher levels in listening, question types are not announced. You must understand them from the audio. That is why knowing all patterns is important.

What Is the Most Important TOEFL Preparation Strategy?

Practice with exact timers. Not rough timing. Exact timing.

Use a 10-second timer for listening. Use a 45-second timer for speaking. Time your email writing to seven minutes. This is very important. The new TOEFL tests your speed and focus. It tests how well you perform under pressure. This skill comes from regular practice. You cannot learn it in one night.

What Typing Speed Is Needed for Writing?

The exam feels rushed on purpose. You must think fast and write fast. Improve your typing speed to at least 40 words per minute.

All tasks are on computer. Time is limited. Remember, the new 90-minute test is less tiring than the old two-hour exam. Use this advantage. Stay focused. Trust your preparation. The new TOEFL 2026 is faster, smarter, and more demanding. But with the right preparation strategy and realistic practice conditions, students can master this updated format and achieve their target scores.
