What is the future of Medical Studies Abroad?

Well if you look at the figures last year (2021) – a total of 8,70,066 medical students qualified for the NEET exam. However, the total number of medical seats available was around 85,000. Hence, you can see the huge gap that exists between the total number of medical seats available and NEET qualifiers looking to pursue MBBS.

This year, there has been an additional 5,000 MBBS seats added to the above number, bringing the total available medical seats to 90,000. Hence, there will always be a large number of medical student aspirants who would either have to settle with a private medical university or a semi-government medical university which have a questionable quality of education and charge a bomb or else apply to medical universities abroad.

Studying MBBS Abroad

Studying MBBS abroad is cheaper than most private medical universities in India. And there is no way that the seat shortage is going to be met anytime soon. Hence a section of the students will have to travel abroad if they want to keep their dream of studying medicine, even if this means that have to stay away from their homes. All candidates who wish to pursue foreign medical degrees abroad would be required to study a course of theory, practical and clinical training equivalent to Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) of India; and should have completed an internship of twelve months in addition to such course in the same foreign institution where the primary medical qualification has been obtained. Medical students are also required to have hands-on training in clinical subjects.

Foreign Medicine Graduates can only come back to their country after having completed their course, an internship of twelve months and passed the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) to work in India to get a provisional registration with State Medical Councils. They need to intern for another 12 months in India before they can get their permanent registration.

Future of MBBS Studies abroad

While the low cost of studying medicine abroad, state-of-the-art universities complete with the latest facilities and a robust up-to-date curriculum are important deciding factors for Indian students looking to study abroad, however, security and political stability have also become important indicators for studying abroad as has been exposed by the recent events around the world. While MBBS in Ukraine and MBBS in Russia would still be major destinations for medical studies and Indian students would form the major chunk of medical students in the foreign university.

The recent conflict (Russia-Ukraine War Crisis) has definitely taken away some of the shine that came with the two countries. The damage to the reputation of the two countries though not permanent is here to stay and would see the registration of lesser international students given the political instability that is to ensure once the Russia-Ukraine crisis is over.

Poland, Romania, Hungary invites stranded medical students from Ukraine to complete their course

Hungary, Poland and Romania have offered foreign students whose studies were disrupted as Russia invaded Ukraine an opportunity to continue their education at their respective universities. The aforementioned countries are home to top medical universities and their initiative of inviting Indian students to complete their studies is a step towards further strengthening the friendship that the countries share with India. However, an official road map is yet to be decided by the Government of India. While a majority of the students are waiting for the government to announce sanctions there is a sizeable number of students who are looking at transfer alternatives.
