Commonly asked questions
Q:   Which exam is tougher among NEET and CUET UG?
A:

The NEET and CUET UG are two most competitive undergraduate entrance exams. NEET UG is conducted for admission to medical, dental, nursing and allied courses, CUET UG is the gateway to multiple bachelor's degree courses offered at multiple universities across India. While NEET UG has a single question paper on three subjects, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, CUET UG is conducted separately for different subjects. According to experts and students, the difficulty level of NEET is higher than the CUET UG exam. Moreover, the syllabus of NEET consists of both Class 11 and Class 12 curriculum whereas CUET UG syllabus consists only of Class 12 curriculum, making the syllabus and weightage of NEET higher than the CUET UG exam.

Q:   How many Sets are there in the NEET question paper?
A:

There are generally four Sets of NEET question papers, which are further segregated into six parts. The names of the NEET 2024 question paper Sets and codes are Q, R, S and T. For the NEET 2024 re-exam, the question paper sets were A, B, C and D. The multiple Sets and codes in the NEET question papers ensure that there is no malpractice in the conduct of the exam. The names of the Sets and codes of the regional NEET question papers are different from the English ones. While distributing the question papers of NEET invigilators had to ensure that they did not give the same set question paper to two consecutive candidates. Once candidates are given the NEET question paper by invigilators, they need to check whether the question paper and test booklet, or answer sheet is of the same code. In case of a mismatch, they need to bring the matter to the invigilators notice. In case they submit the NEET test booklet with a different code from that of the NEET question paper, their exam will stand cancelled.

Q:   What is the difficulty level of NEET UG?
A:

The difficulty level of NEET 2025 was very tough. As compared to last year, the difficulty level of the exam was much tougher. Physics was the toughest section. Chemistry was of moderate level of difficulty. The Biology section consisted of Botany and Zoology, was the easiest section. Botany questions were tougher than that of Zoology. The majority of the questions were NCERT-based, which were of easy difficulty level. There were some analytical questions, which were tough. Overall, the difficulty level of NEET 2025 subjects was moderate and the paper was manageable according to the candidates.

Q:   Who sets the NEET question paper?
A:
NTA is the authority behind the question paper of NEET. The questions are sent in by different professors and NTA selects the questions for the examination. No single person is responsible for designing the question paper. Generally the NEET question papers are set by an expert committee or panel of subject experts who later review the answer key challenges. Candidates may find questions from previous years' NEET question papers as well. This is why experts suggest solving previous years' question papers for NEET preparation.
Q:   Is calculator usage allowed during NEET exam?
A:

No, NEET candidates are not allowed to use calculator during the exam. They have to do calculations manually on the test booklet provided to them. Calculator is one of the prohibited items to be carried to the exam centre. Moreover, since NEET is conducted in paper-pencil-based mode, they are not provided onscreen calculator unlike other computer-based exams. Hence, students are advised to practice calculations so that they do not face much difficulty on the day of the NEET exam.

Q:   What was the ratio of questions asked from Class 11 and Class 12 syllabi in the NEET 2024 exam?
A:
There is no specific or defined ratio of Class 11 and Class in which questions are set from the NEET syllabus. It varies from year to year. Based on the previous year's and this year's NEET question paper analysis, it has been observed that the ratio of the Class 12 syllabus is higher than that of the Class 11 syllabus. Here we present the subject-wise ratio of Class 11 and Class 12 NEET syllabi based on last year's analysis. Physics Class 11 - 40% Class 12 - 60% Chemistry: Class 11 - 46% Class 12 - 54% Biology: Class 11 - 53% Class 12 - 47%. The ratio may vary next year.
Q:   Where can I download the previous years NEET question papers?
A:
Aspirants can download the previous years' NEET question papers from Shiksha. Com for free. They may also visit the official website of NTA and visit the Downloads section for previous years' NEET question papers. They have to select the year, exam and Sets to check and download the question papers for NEET and other entrance exams conducted by NTA. Moreover, top coaching institutes offering NEET coaching also provide previous years' NEET question papers for the students who enrol to their institute or opt for the mock tests. There are various other social media platforms which circulate NEET question papers of previous years for practice purpose. Students preparing for next year's NEET must ensure that they collect the previous years' question papers and solve those.
Q:   Is the difficulty level of NEET similar to JEE Main exam?
A:

While the level of the NEET and JEE Main is same, as both the exams are of undergraduate level and the syllabus is that of Class 11 and Class 12, the difficulty level of JEE Main is higher than that of NEET. Although both the exams are tough and highly competitive in their own rights, the exam pattern and syllabus are different. Physics and Chemistry are common subjects, and Mathematics and Biology are covered in JEE Main and NEET respectively. The focus on Mathematics and computational ability of candidates is more in the JEE Main exam, whereas in NEET, the Biology subject carries the highest weightage. On the other hand, the difficulty level of the Physics questions are higher in JEE Main than NEET as according to experts, they are trickier in the former as compared to the latter.

Q:   Do all the Sets of NEET question papers carry the same questions?
A:

Although the questions are the same in all Sets of the NEET question paper, the order of the sections and questions vary from set to set. The different order of the sections and questions ensure that there is no malpractice conducted during the exam. Even if some questions are absolutely different in separate Sets or languages, the topics and chapters covered and difficulty level remain similar to ensure normalisation. Hence, it can be said that NTA Sets a common question paper carrying 200 questions, after which the questions are distributed across four Sets and six subsets of the NEET question paper. The subjects, and the questions within the subjects are shuffled for each of the NEET question paper Sets. This allows a parity in terms of topics covered and difficulty level, as well as allows avoidance of malpractice.

Q:   What is the exam pattern of NEET?
A:

NEET or National Eligibility cum Entrance Test is a paper-pencil based test (PBT) of three hours or 180 minutes duration. There will be a total of 180 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), all of which will be compulsory to attempt. The syllabus of the exam consists of Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects. The Biology subject is segregated between Zoology and Botany. On the other hand, Chemistry subject is segragated into Organic, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry. Unlike last year, the subjects will not be divided into two sections.

According to the marking scheme, each correct question carries 4 marks and there is a negative marking of 1 mark for each wrong answer. No marks will be awarded or deducted for unattempted or extra attempted questions. The following table brings the structure of the NEET exam.

SectionsNumber of QuestionsTotal Marks
Physics Section 45180
Chemistry Section 45180
Botany Section45180
Zoology Section45180
Q:   Will the NEET exam pattern remain the same as last year?
A:

Last year, the NEET 2025 exam pattern underwent major changes. It is expected that the NEET 2026 exam pattern will remain the same as last year. The total number of questions and duration in minutes have been reduced from 200 to 180. The total marks of the exam is 720. Each question has four answer options. Each correct answer fetches four marks and there is one mark negative marking for each wrong answer. There is no negative marking for unattempted questions or extra attempted questions.

Q:   I marked two answers for a question in NEET. One of the answers is correct. Will I get full marks for this question?
A:

According to the NEET exam pattern, a question for which more than one response is marked on the OMR sheet will be considered incorrect. For such questions, one mark would be deducted. Hence, candidates should be careful while answering on the OMR sheet. They should solve the questions separately on the space provided for rough work, and then shade the answer option on the OMR sheet to avoid such errors. Revision after completing the exam is also important.

Q:   What are the changes introduced in NEET 2025 exam pattern?
A:

To be precise, there are no specific changes introduced in the NEET 2025 exam pattern. Rather, the exam pattern has been revised to that of the pre-COVID era. Following revisions have been made in the NEET exam pattern 2025.

  • Removal of optional questions - The 20 optional questions across the subjects have been removed.
  • Reduction in number of questions - Owing to the removal of the optional questions, the number of questions on the NEET question paper has been reduced from 200 to 180.
  • Removal of second section from each subject - Till last year, each subject was divided into two sections, Section A and Section B. This year, the sections have been removed and each subject will consist of 45 questions.
  • Reduction in duration - The total duration of NEET exam has been reduced from 200 minutes to 180 minutes.
Q:   Will NEET have descriptive questions?
A:

As per the NEET exam pattern, the examination will only have objective type multiple-choice questions (MCQs). Hence, there is no possibility of having descriptive questions in NEET. Moreover, given the fact that it is an entrance exam, there is not much significance of the descriptive questions or theoritical knowledge. Each question will carry four answer options and test-takers will have to select the correct answer option and mark it on the OMR sheet.
