MBBS Fees in India range between INR 6,000 and INR 3 crore for the complete programme. When we talk about MBBS, the first name that comes to the minds of the candidates is AIIMS, which is the dream college of every MBBS aspirant. Check out all the necessary details about the MBBS Fee structure for all top medical institutes in India.

MBBS is the most sought-after course for candidates having Biology as their major subject in class XII. Every student dreams at least once of becoming a doctor in India because in our country, the doctor is only second to God, who saves life. MBBS Fees in India range between INR 6,000 and INR 3 crore for the complete programme. Check out all the necessary details about the MBBS Fee structure for all top medical institutes in India.

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery is the full form of MBBS. It is the most sought-after course for the class XII Biology students. The MBBS courses in India are regulated directly by the Union Ministry of Education through various controlling bodies such as the MCC, National Medical Commission, Directorate General of Health Services and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare itself.

The fee of the private and government medical colleges offering the MBBS seats are regulated by State Governments (for government colleges) and the Fee Regulatory Committees (FRCs) working under the National Medical Commission (NMC) (for private colleges). Since the fee is a barrier for the poor to attain the quality education, hence it is heavily regulated.

NEET exam is the only gateway to get admission to the MBBS course in India. Government colleges have an affordable fee structure and the financial institution provides education loans too for the MBBS seat in the government medical colleges but the same is not available for majority of private medical colleges. This article by Shiksha brings the MBBS fees in government colleges and MBBS fees in private colleges in India.

When we talk about MBBS, the question of its fee is always in the spotlight. The five years and six months course including one year of rotational internship is an expensive course. But if the student is able to secure a good rank in the NEET exam, they will be eligible to get admission to government medical colleges. In government medical colleges, candidates can take admission in their budget. Hence, admissions to government medical colleges are always the priority of NEET aspirants. During the counselling process of NEET, after the seat allotment is done, candidates will have to pay the requisite MBBS admission fees to confirm the admission.

AIIMS is the top medical institute in India and interestingly most of the NEET toppers choose AIIMS Delhi to pursue MBBS.  At present, there are 23 AIIMS campuses in India out of which 19 are functional and the rest are under construction or semi-functional.  Besides, AIIMS there are other institutes in India as well which hold a good reputation and have been ranked by NIRF as well.

Q&A Icon
Commonly asked questions
Q:   Will marks be deducted for unanswered questions in NEET?
A:

No, marks are not deducted for unanswered questions in NEET. However, the NTA applies negative marking of 1 mark for each incorrect answer in the NEET UG examination.

Q:   Do all the Sets of NEET question papers carry the same questions?
A:

Although the questions are the same in all Sets of the NEET question paper, the order of the sections and questions vary from set to set. The different order of the sections and questions ensure that there is no malpractice conducted during the exam. Even if some questions are absolutely different in separate Sets or languages, the topics and chapters covered and difficulty level remain similar to ensure normalisation. Hence, it can be said that NTA Sets a common question paper carrying 200 questions, after which the questions are distributed across four Sets and six subsets of the NEET question paper. The subjects, and the questions within the subjects are shuffled for each of the NEET question paper Sets. This allows a parity in terms of topics covered and difficulty level, as well as allows avoidance of malpractice.

Q:   What is the correct way of answering the NEET question paper?
A:
Candidates will be provided with OMR sheets. They will have to shade the correct answer option corresponding to each question uniformly with a ballpoint pen which would be provided to them inside the exam hall. They should fill only one answer option circle, otherwise, the response will be considered as wrong and would result in negative marking. They will have to do the rough work on the NEET question paper, in the space provided. While answering the NEET question paper on the OMR sheet, candidates must be careful that they select the correct question number and fill up the correct answer option. There are cases where candidates solve the question and deduce the correct option, but make a mistake while filling the OMR sheet by not checking the question number or the answer option carefully. Such mistakes can cause a negative marking of one mark.
Q:   How many Sets are there in the NEET question paper?
A:

There are generally four Sets of NEET question papers, which are further segregated into six parts. However, in NEET 2025, there were four sets of the NEET question paper, which were named as 45, 46, 47, and 48, and these were not further divided into six subsets, which was followed till the previous year. The names of the NEET 2024 question paper Sets and codes are Q, R, S and T. For the NEET 2024 re-exam, the question paper sets were A, B, C and D. The multiple Sets and codes in the NEET question papers ensure that there is no malpractice in the conduct of the exam. The names of the Sets and codes of the regional NEET question papers are different from the English ones. While distributing the question papers of NEET invigilators had to ensure that they did not give the same set of question papers to two consecutive candidates. Once candidates are given the NEET question paper by invigilators, they need to check whether the question paper and test booklet, or answer sheet, is of the same code. In case of a mismatch, they need to bring the matter to the invigilator's notice. In case they submit the NEET test booklet with a different code from that of the NEET question paper, their exam will stand cancelled.

MBBS Fee in Private Medical College

Private universities are approved institutions by UGC. However, these universities do not rely on central or state governments. They can approve and disburse degrees but cannot have off-campus colleges or affiliate with an institution/college. “They can establish off-campus centre (s) within the concerned State after their existence of five years and with the prior approval of the University Grants Commission,” states the UGC website. Unlike state and central universities, which have a ‘Chancellor’ as the head, a private university is always headed by a ‘President’ or ‘Chairperson’.

Private institutes have the liberty to decide their own fee but few states such as Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka have capped the annual fee for privately held MBBS colleges. The step was taken to avoid overcharging of fees to the students. Besides the general quota, these private institutions offer a large number of seats based on management and the NRI quota. Below is the approximate MBBS fee in private medical colleges in India as per the quota:

  • Management Quota: MBBS degree fee in private colleges under the Management Quota ranges from INR 4,00,000 in medical colleges of Kerala to as high as INR 17,95,000 in the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Jaipur, Rajasthan.
  • NRI Quota: The MBBS fee for the NRI quota in the various private medical colleges is also decided by the individual institutions. The average annual MBBS degree fee for students applying under the NRI quota is 25,000 US Dollars.
  • Government Quota: A number of private colleges in the country have a quota of seats allocated under the state government quota. MBBS fee for these seats, even in the private institution, is less than compared to the other categories and lies somewhere between INR 10,000 to INR 7,00,000 annually.
  • Other: Various private or self-financing MBBS colleges in Karnataka also offer a quota categorised as ‘other’, the MBBS fee for which is in between INR 21,00,000 to INR 40,00,000 per annum.

MBBS Fee Structure: Components of MBBS fees

Students should be aware of all the components of the MBBS fee, the above-mentioned fee structure is just one component of the many. Fee components vary from course to course depending upon the curriculum of the programme. For MBBS there are components which can be categorised as seminars and conferences and may incur a decent amount of money into the MBBS fee structure. As these conferences and seminars provide certifications and study materials, they are paid seminars. Besides this, some colleges also charge laboratory fees separately. Apart from these two, there are basic requirements that MBBS students have to pay for separately. Below are the components of the MBBS fee structure:

  • Tuition fee
  • Laboratory fee
  • Personal expenses
  • Conferences and Seminar Charges
  • Boarding (Hostel or Paying Guest)
  • Travel (If the campus is away from the home town)
  • Course material (Notes, Xerox, books, online subscriptions)
  • Mess or food charges
  • Internet
  • Laptop and computer
  • Miscellaneous expenses
Q&A Icon
Commonly asked questions
Q:   Who sets the NEET question paper?
A:

NTA is the authority which creates the question paper of NEET. The questions are sent in by different professors, and NTA selects the questions for the examination. No single person is responsible for designing the question paper. Generally, the NEET question papers are set by an expert committee or panel of subject experts who later review the answer key challenges. Candidates may find questions from previous years' NEET question papers as well. This is why experts suggest solving previous years' question papers for NEET preparation.

Q:   What is the ideal time and method to take NEET mock tests?
A:

Candidates must ensure that they take the NEET mock test in a proctored manner within a simulated environment. Hence, ideally students should take mock test in the exam timing, from 2 PM to 5 PM, without any break. This would help them get adjusted to the exam taking environment. Moreover, the test should be taken without any break. It must also be ensured that they take the test in a quite environment either alone or with a group of fellow NEET aspirants. Creating a simulated test-taking experience is important. While a number of students take the NEET mock tests at coaching institutes, some prefer to take it at their home. Irrespective of the location, the above factors must be followed to get the best out of the NEET mock test.

Q:   Was the NEET 2025 exam pattern changed?
A:

Yes, the NEET 2025 exam pattern was changed. NTA announced the change in the exam pattern on January 25, 2025, to enable candidates prepare accordingly. The optional questions were removed. Instead of 200 questions, there were 180 questions. The total duration of NEET 2025 was reduced from 200 minutes to 180 minutes or three hours now.

Q:   When is the right time to start solving the NEET question papers for preparation?
A:

Aspirants should start solving the NEET question papers at least six months prior to the exam. Prior to solving the previous years NEET question papers, they should complete the NEET syllabus completely. Students may also solve sectional portions from the NEET question paper after completing the preparation for each subject. Ideally students should solve the NEET question paper in the exam timing, from 2 PM to 5 PM, without any break. This would help them get adjusted to the exam taking environment. Moreover, the test should be taken without any break. It must also be ensured that they take the test in a quite environment either alone or with a group of fellow NEET aspirants. Creating a simulated test-taking experience is important. The above factors must be followed to get the best out of the NEET question paper.
