What is SGPA?

Before you understand the process of SGPA calculation, you should understand the basics. SGPA full form is Semester Grade Point Average. To present the academic performance of a candidate in a semester, universities use SGPA format. SGPA is a part of CGPA, which shows your overall academic performance across all semesters.

  • SGPA gives a clear overview of the performance of a student in a particular semester.
  • It becomes easy for universities to assess students' performance semester by semester.

How to Calculate SGPA?

Understanding your SGPA is important for tracking your academic progress. Your university will have a grading scale that translates letter grades into numerical grade points. You need to convert them.

  • Know Your Grade Points: Find letter grade of each course. Then convert it to a numerical grade point based on your university’s scale.
  • Multiply by Credits: For each course, multiply the grade point by the credit hours assigned to that course. This gives you the “credit points.”
  • Add All of Them: Sum all the credit points from every course taken in the semester.
  • Total Credit Hours: Add all the credit hours of the semester.
  • Divide for SGPA: Divide the total credit points by the total credit hours.
SGPA Formula is (Sum of Credit Points) Divided By (Sum of Credit Hours)

Note: Each letter grade corresponds to a specific Grade Point: (A = 9, B = 8, D = 6, E = 4, F = 0 (Fail))

Why Calculate SGPA for Study Abroad?

SGPA score plays an important role in making your study abroad  a reality. A higher SGPA means higher chances of getting admission. Other than this, a higher SGPA score can help you to get scholarships and education loans. This can reduce the financial burden of studying abroad.

Lower SGPA score may require you to obtain high scores on standardized tests like the TOEFLIELTS, or GRE. Additionally, you'll need to create a strong profile supported by strong letters of recommendation and other relevant materials.

Importance of Calculating SGPA

Why is it important to calculate SGPA marks? It provides a clear understanding of your academic performance and helps you to track your progress. Here are some conditions where you need to convert your SGPA score.

  • Self-Assessment and Improvement: It helps students to track their performance so they can improve their scores in the upcoming semester.
  • Admission to Foreign Universities: The major requirement for calculating SGPA score is to apply for admission to foreign universities. At the time of application, universities ask for the academic score of the student.
  • Scholarship/Education Loan Eligibility: Semester Grade Point Average helps you to get a scholarship or Education loan.

SGPA

CGPA

Timeframe

SGPA represents the performance for a single semester.

CGPA can be calculated for a semester and year

Formula

Grade Points Sum / Credit Points Sum

Sum of Grade Points / Total Number of Subjects

Scope

SGPA helps students understand the scope of subjects in future based on their performance in the current year.

Students can understand the scope of subjects based on performance throughout the academic year.

Impact on Future

A lower SGPA in one semester can be offset by higher performance in subsequent semester

A lower CGPA is more difficult to improve, as it reflects overall performance in a year
