Which UK universities accept backlogs?

UK universities are quite lenient while accepting applicants with backlogs. Most universities accept up to 15 or 15+ backlogs. However, it is important to note that highly reputed universities may not consider applicants with even GRE/GMAT scores. As per their education system, UK universities is that they do not count the number of attempts as the number of backlogs, unlike Germany and Australia where they count the number of attempts as well. The list of universities below accepts backlogs anywhere ranging from 5 to 15 backlogs:

Key Considerations for International Students with Backlogs in UK

Several universities, colleges and institutions in the UK accept students with backlogs on certain conditions and internal policies. Check out some of the general key points and considerations about backlogs in UK universities below.

  1. Number of Backlogs: Universities may accept from 2-3 to even 10-15 backlogs of a student, this varies from university to university. However, students must note that most universities in UK consider 1 failed subject as 1 backlog rather than considering the number of re-attempts as backlogs.
  2. Type of Backlogs: Students must note that no university in the UK or elsewhere accepts any active backlog(s) at the time of application. However, backlogs in subjects unrelated to the intended course of study are often more easily overlooked.
  3. Academic Record: It goes without saying that students with a strong academic profile (i.e. they have good GPAs in their previous qualifications, relevant work experience and a strong personal statement) and some backlogs may still have higher chances of getting considered by the university's admission committee.

It is always recommended that you check the concerned university's website regularly for any updates about the policy's change or so. Students can also directly question the admission committee about the university's policy on backlogs.

Which Countries other than the UK Accept Backlogs?

Major countries like the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand accept applicants with backlogs. Some universities may also accept up to 15+ backlogs. On the other hand, countries like Germany and Ireland are quite strict about backlogs. There are only a few universities in these countries that may consider 2-3 backlogs given the fact that your IELTS/TOEFL or GRE/GMAT are good. Another question that we often come across from study abroad applicants is whether the backlogs will affect their visa chances. Your backlog history will not affect your visa procedure as long as you have a university acceptance letter.

If someone has around 17 backlogs, would they be accepted in the above mentioned universities?

Reply to Alex Dominic

Depends on the university if they feel the candidate's profile is a good fit. This basically depends on academic scores and extracurricular activities.

Quick question, what if someone has 1 or 2 backlogs but not cleared them, will they be still allowed for studies in any UK university?

Reply to astik biswas

The study gap has to be explained in this case and mentioning backlogs will again not grant admission. You can show some other course completion or work experience.

In that case, since the arrears are from bachelors, can he apply for bachelor course again or any diploma course?
