Hello Payal,
Becoming an astronaut is a dream for many, but the opportunities come very infrequently. In India, there is presently no thought of sending anybody to space. The US has just now selected its future astronauts. In addition, to become an astronaut, one need not be an aeronautical engineer.

Hi Simran,
To become an astronaut in NASA after 12th, please complete your graduation first. A Bachelor's degree in Physics is recommended. Since NASA recruits only a handful of applicants from an entire pool of applicants from diverse backgrounds you have to be a highly academic and research oriented candidate. Becoming an astronaut is strenuous and involves intense physical and mental training. They are expected to be knowledgeable about commanding a space shuttle and be adept at managing problems faced by the space shuttle and/or its various components. A vital responsibility includes ensuring the safety of all crew members and the spacecraft. Astronauts also need to be alert at all times, about the situation within and outside the spacecraft. Regular maintenance operations and reporting to the base station is an elemental part of the job. Exercise is essential for maintaining stamina as space walks can sometimes last for more than 7 hours. Phy... View more

Hello Kathan,
Your query is quite okay. Actually, aerospace is the name of the industry that deals with aero products and the field of study is called as aeronautical engineering. For working in space, one needs to be an astronaut. Presently only pilots are selected to be astronauts. However if you want to work on spacecraft then you should join ISRO.

Dear Afaq,
It is not that easy to become an astronomer at NASA. There is a lot of academic physical fitness requires from you. If you see, the current astronauts are sometime double PhDs in science and technology field. 1000+ hours of long duration in-flight training, your vision, blood pressure, height, weight, mental conditions, yours and your family's medical history, etc. plays a big factor in this field. However, since you are in 10th, just focus on to complete your class 12th with high marks and take admission in B.Tech aerospace engineering in a college like India Institute of Space Science and Technology.

Hello Rohith, aah, it's very nice to hear from you that you want to become an astronaut. Unfortunately no country accepts nationals from any other country to become astronauts. In India, only pilots of IAF have been allowed to become astronauts. You have to take your pick. Best wishes to you.

A doctoral degree is the usual educational requirement to become an astronomer, since most of the work tends to be related to research and development.
Those who opt for this field should clear their plus two examination under the science stream, especially in physics and maths. For pursuing a career in theoretical or observational astronomy one may go through the science stream after plus two. Since universities offering undergraduate program in Astronomy are rarely found, one can join for a major/ honors in Physics with Mathematics as a subsidiary subject. Thereafter, take a master's degree in Physics or Astronomy. After the success... View more

Hi,
Formal path for becoming a scientist needs a Masters followed by a Ph.D. degree. After your Bachelors , try to join a research based Masters in good universities like IIT, IISc, Hyderabad Central University, TIFR, etc. These universities also offer a joint M.Sc/Ph.D programmes so that you can save one year time.

To become astronaut you will have to become a Pilot or Flight Engineer. Opportunities to become Astronaut are very few ( you can count them on fingers). In India astronauts were inducted from Fighter branch of Indian Air Force. I will recommend that complete Aeronautical Engineering degree and learn to fly. You can then apply to organisations such as NASA to fulfill your dream.

First of all, you have to study advanced physics and mathematics. Now, you can either sit in competitive exams and get a good rank, or pursue higher education in reputed institutes until you get a Ph.D. Your current course won't be an obstacle. By first year, I think you mean intermediate or class XI. If yes, then it's perfect. If you mean B.Sc., then it's still cool, you have a lot of time left.
Having a creative mind and good grip on subjects of astrophysics, particle physics, quantum mechanics, cosmology, and basic Newtonian physics will be very helpful. For that, I would recommend reading books on the subject. I'm go... View more
