So, you should work on your skill set, analyze your interest areas, future plans, and the job market demand to see which M.Tech course would work the best for you and take you a step ahead towards career success.
Well, there is no straight answer to this question. It depends on the college, your academic background, and the chosen specialization. A few colleges may give you this provision where you can switch your specialisation during the M.Tech coursework duration, given you meet certain academic requirements, pass some additional tests, opt for some bridge programme to cope with the curriculum, or choose a specialisation within the same engineering stream.
But in most cases, it generally becomes difficult to make that switch, as MTech is a 2-year specialised programme dealing with advanced concepts and practical training planned out in a certain manner and course flow, which makes it difficult for colleges to allow that transition.
You can gain a lot of skills after completing the M Tech course be it in the classroom setting or through internship programs, lab training, field visits and project work. Some of the general and important skills are given here:
- Strong Mathematical and Computational Aptitude
- Analytical and Problem Solving Abilities
- Strong Research Aptitude
- Technical Proficiency
- CAD Software and Programming Languages
- Excellent Communication Skills
- Teamwork and Collaborative Spirit
- Creativity and Out of the box Thinking
Whether doing an MTech in CSE is worthwhile is a relative question depending on the options the candidates have. On a positive side, M.Tech provides subject specialisation and that will give exposure to better employment opportunities and remunerative pay packages mostly when they go for higher or research level positions.
Also, the achievement of that degree makes it possible to plan for a PhD afterward. But there are demerits such as time and money consumption, certain employer’s bias towards work experience, and the understanding that not all IT jobs entail MTech. The other aspects that are also looked at include the current experience, stature of program, and market demand. Finally, the decision is made based on these factors, in reference to your career goals, vision or plan.

Online MTech for Working Professionals
Online Master of Technology (MTech) is a postgraduate degree programme offered by institutes/universities in an online mode. It is a Work Integrated Learning Programme (WILP) that allows students to earn a master's degree in a specialized technology field without attending physical classes. It is important to note that online MTech/M Tech Distance Education courses are invalid in India; but working professionals can opt for Part Time MTech courses to enhance their skills and advance their careers.
Online MTech courses are a mix of online lectures, virtual discussions, assignments and projects that students can take up at their own pace and schedule. Online MTech serve as an alternative to traditional on campus programs for individuals seeking to advance their careers in technology without disrupting their current employment or personal commitments. Surprisingly, Online MTech or M Tech distance education courses are gaining popularity among working professionals because of their flexibility and accessibility which makes them an ideal choice for business professionals.
You might be interested in below Online MTech courses from top universities/institutes:
- M.Tech. Software Engineering by BITS Pilani
- M.Tech. Cloud Computing by BITS Pilani
- M.Tech. in Electric Vehicle (EV) Technology by IIT Hyderabad
- M.Tech. Data Engineering by SRM University
-
M.Tech in Data Science and Machine Learning by PES University
The clear answer is no. An online M.Tech degree is considered invalid in India. It is not approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and UGC because of a variety of reasons. One important reason is zero practical exposure. Technical programs like M.Tech are meant for the professional world which demands technical expertise and advanced skills which is not completely possible in the online mode. Secondly, there is no lab assistance possible in online M.Tech programs, making it less valuable than regular face-to-face M.Tech programs.
But, working professionals can surely opt for these to hone their skills and learn something extra along with their regular jobs. Working professionals can also opt for part-time M.Tech courses that are certainly approved by the AICTE and UGC.
The first thing to understand here is that online and distance M.Tech courses are considered invalid in India as per the recent AICTE and UGC guidelines. This is because engineering is a field that needs practical training and lab work along with theory classes, which is not possible in the virtual mode. So, recruiters also give more importance to students with regular, offline M.Tech degrees.
Having said that, there is an option of AICTE accredited online M.Tech for Working Professionals offered by a few popular colleges like BITS Pilani and IIT Hyderabad that is meant for people to enhance their technical skills and learn more besides their regular jobs. Employers do accept this option and often allow their employees to go ahead with it. But, as a student, you must go for a regular M.Tech course if you wish to excel in your career.

You need to work hard for your final BTech/B.E exams and make sure you get at least 60% marks overall, to be eligible for admission to the IITs in India. The competition is very high there, given their status and All-India ranking in India, and hence, their minimum marks requirement is also of a certain standard as compared to other universities that may consider you for admission with 50 to 60% marks in graduation as well.
Every college has their own admission requirements for giving admission. You can go through the basic list of documents usually needed for getting admission to M.Tech courses:
• B.E/ B.Tech Mark Sheet with at least 55% marks
• Provisional Mark Sheet (if original one is not issued yet)
• Entrance Exam Score card and Admit Card Copy
• Class 12 Mark Sheet
• A Valid ID Proof like Aadhar Card, PAN, Passport, etc.
• Reserved Category Certificate (if applicable)
• Migration and Character Certificate (may be needed)
• Recent Passport-Size Photos
For pursuing M.Tech in India, you should definitely give relevant entrance exams like the GATE exam or other state-level or university-specific exams and score very good marks and rank in the same to be able to get a seat at a decent college. M.Tech courses can be studied in various specializations like Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, CSE, Electrical Engineering, etc.
As an exceptional case, if you are an IIT BTech graduates, you can directly apply for M.Tech admission at the IITs after getting an 8 CGPA or 75% marks in graduation.
There is definitely some sort of marks relaxation offered to reserved category students during the M.Tech admission process. Generally, the relaxation offered is by 5% marks. For example, if the general category students have to get at least 60% marks to be eligible for M.Tech admission, reserved category students need to get only 55% marks.

Yes, it is possible to have two M.Tech. /M. S. degrees in Engineering in India from two different universities. Currently, I have not found specific rules related to a student obtaining more than one master’s degree in a particular subject or in different specialties. However, there are some factors to consider:
- The structure of a second Master’s programme in a specific field may also vary from University to University and the admission requirements for candidates with previous Master’s degrees.
- It is also important to note that some universities may require a work experience or research experience between the two Master’s degrees.
No, it is not possible to do a Masters in engineering without a bachelor's degree in engineering. By completing a bachelor's degree in engineering before pursuing a master's degree is the most common route and will give you the strongest foundation for your master's studies.
To apply for the M Tech course admission 2025, you need to fill out the application forms that get released online via the official college portal well in advance before the final exam is scheduled so that students have enough time to apply.
Considering the fact that everything is done online these days, almost all of the college authorities also open the virtual registration window; however, a few colleges might still follow the old pattern of offline form filling at the college admission window, for which you must check the official college websites for precise information.
There is no such necessity to take coaching to clear the GATE exam for admission to MTech courses; you can get excellent marks and rank through dedicated effort and self-study. Basically, it depends on your learning style, dedication towards clearing the exam, and passion to pursue MTech.
Having said that, coaching can definitely add value because of the structured learning approach followed there, along with expert knowledge and guidance and access to study material that can turn out to be very helpful.
The difficulty level of the M.Tech entrance tests usually depends on various parameters like the previous year's student response, the number of exam applicants, the estimated number of seats available, and of course, your own preparation. The M Tech exam-conducting body looks at various factors and sets the exam paper accordingly.
However, in general, the entrance for M.Tech like GATE or other state-level exams is considered to be challenging and tricky to crack. You need to really put in a lot of hard work, as it is not going to be a cakewalk.
An MTech degree can be the right choice for you if you want to enhance your learning in a specific engineering field, have a passion for research, and want to apply for specific industrial job roles that need expertise.

Well, yes. You can study an MTech degree in a different branch than your BTech, given you meet the minimum eligibility requirements and pass the GATE exam in the relevant discipline. Several top colleges prefer you to have done your BTech at least in a related branch, while others follow a more flexible approach.
Interestingly, recently IIT Delhi has introduced cross-branch M.Tech options in the 3rd year of your BTech degree, where you can choose to pursue M.Tech in any specialisation in the third year of your BTech course and graduate with a dual degree at the end of 5 years.
This is quite a subjective question and depends on individual goals and future plans. Both MTech and skill-based certifications have their own upsides and can prove to be future-proof. If you're somebody who has more inclination towards advanced technical learning and research knowledge, you should go for a full-fledged M.Tech degree in your preferred specialization, but if you want to focus on the practical side, industrial trends and skill development opportunities, you must consider skill-based certifications.
So, you need to do some self-introspection and only then come to a decision after analyzing your strengths and future goals.

Hello aspirant!
Master of Technology (M Tech full form) is a postgraduate engineering degree awarded to you after the course completion. The duration of MTech course is two years in India. You need to have a bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering field with at least 55 to 60% marks in graduation. For reserved category students, the marks eligibility is often relaxed by 5%.
Students can also pursue integrated BTech-MTech or MTech-PhD courses that are usually 5 years long and offer dual degree specialization, saving a lot of time and money.
Best wishes!
