What is NMAT?

NMAT by GMAC or NMAT is a national-level MBA entrance test conducted for admission to NMIMS University and other reputed B-Schools in India. NMAT exam is a candidate friendly exam. It is designed keeping in mind the convenience of the test takers. Candidates are allowed to choose their preferred date during the testing window as well as self-schedule the test, appointment date, time and venue based on the availability of seats at each test centre.GMAC, the exam conducting body Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) has announced the second phase of NMAT 2020 which is being conducted from February 2 to February 8. The original phase of NMAT 2020 has been conducted from November 4 to January 30.

The other important aspects of the exam are:

  • The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) conducts NMAT 
  • NMAT is a unique MBA entrance exam similar to GMAT, wherein test-takers get a chance to attempt the exam thrice in a three-month test window
  • GMAC has revised the exam pattern of NMAT this year. The number of questions has been reduced from 120 to 108.
  • Candidates can either opt for appearing for the test from a designated test centre or an online remote proctored mode

NMAT Eligibility Criteria 2020

The exam conducting authority has specified the following eligibility criteria for NMAT 2020. Candidates need to fulfil eligibility requirements before applying for the entrance test.

  • Candidate must have completed graduation under 10+2+3 or four years of education pattern from any stream
  • Secured not less than 50 per cent aggregate in the final year of graduation
  • Candidates who are awaiting results or are in their final year of graduation are also eligible to apply for NMAT 2020. Admission is granted on a provisional basis until graduation mark sheet and certificate of the qualifying examination are submitted

For the second phase of NMAT 2020, candidates who did not appear for all three attempts of NMAT 2020 in the original phase were eligible. 

Candidates need to also check the eligibility criteria of NMAT participating colleges individually before registering for the examination. Applicants need to select five institutes of their preference for admission while applying and those institutes may have different eligibility criteria for admission.

NMAT 2020 Admission Process

The admission process for NMAT includes six stages—filling of the NMAT 2020 application form, issuing of NMAT 2020 admit card, NMAT 2020 exam, declaration of NMAT 2020 result and NMAT 2020 selection process (Group Discussion and Personal Interview) of the shortlisted candidates. Each stage of the NMAT 2020 admission process is briefly explained below.

Stage 1: Filling of NMAT 2020 Application Form 

The first step of the admission process starts with filling of the NMAT 2020 application form. Candidates need to fill the NMAT application form within the stipulated time. Only successful applicants are issued NMAT 2020 admit card. NMAT 2020 application process is online and candidates need to create login ID and password to complete the online registration process. The application fee is Rs 2,000 (excluding GST). The fee can be paid online using Debit Card, Master Card, Mobile wallet and other options.

After completing the registration process, the test reschedule option is enabled in the student account. In order to reschedule the NMAT 2020 test, candidates had to apply for NMAT exam reschedule option in less than 72 hours from the date and schedule of the test. NMAT rescheduling steps can also be completed through the same student account. The retake fee is Rs 2,000 and rescheduling fee was Rs 1,100. The late registration fee for NMAT 2020 was Rs 2,500. The application fees for NMAT 2020 second phase was Rs 2,300 plus taxes. The fee for the second phase of the application was Rs 2,300 plus applicable taxes. 

Stage 2: Issuing of NMAT 2020 Admit Card

After NMAT 2020 application process is completed with payment of application fee, candidates can book their preferable exam slot and download NMAT 2020 admit card at the same time.  

Stage 3: NMAT 2020 Exam

NMAT 2020 is conducted in the Computer-based Test (CBT) as well as the Internet-Based Test (IBT) mode, wherein candidates can take the test from their home in an online remote proctored manner. The test-takers need to solve 108 MCQs in 120 minutes. There is a sectional time limit in NMAT 2020 exam. The online exam has three sections that are Language Skills, Quantitative Skills and Logical Reasoning.

Stage 4: Declaration of NMAT 2020 Result

The NMAT 2020 result is declared on the official website of NMAT by GMAC. The result can be checked online using login credentials. Candidates need to save scorecard and take print outs of the result for future reference.

Stage 5: NMAT 2020 Selection Process

The next stage of NMAT selection process is the Group Discussion and Personal Interview (GD & PI) round which is conducted by the participating institutes.

The participating institute may also decide to conduct WAT (Writing Ability Test) or Case Discussion (CD) round instead of the conventional GD round. The decision of final admission is based on the combined performance in NMAT online test and GD-PI round.

NMAT 2020 Preparation Tips

NMAT, like any other MBA entrance exam, is a speed-based test. Thus, the entire preparation must be aligned with this thought. Candidates need to follow NMAT preparation strategies, which helps them build speed and the accuracy level to answer questions in the test. In order to build speed and accuracy level, candidates need to catch hold of best books for NMAT preparation, five years NMAT sample papers and attempt mocks. Keep the following points in mind to prepare for the test:

  • Devote three to four months to build conceptual clarity on topics included in the NMAT syllabus
  • Analyse your preparation level by practising NMAT question papers
  • Create notes of each topic while studying and revise them from time to time
  • Discuss your doubts with peers and mentors to clear them

NMAT by GMAC: Guidelines and facilities for students with disability

Test takers with disabilities will have access to special arrangements during NMAT by GMAC, including accommodation facility. Such candidates should send a request to GMAC for the same while filling the NMAT application form.

Candidates with following disabilities can avail this facility:

  • Mobility impairment
  • Learning disability
  • Blindness (low vision to no vision)
  • Leprosy
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Others

Other arrangements made by GMAC for disabled candidates are:

Q. How many times is NMAT conducted?

A. Generally NMAT is conducted once a year, but as a response to the COVID-19 situation, the second phase of NMAT was conducted from February 2 to February 8, 2021. 

Q. Who is eligible to take the second phase of NMAT 2020?

A. Candidates who had not taken the exam or not taken all three attempts are eligible to apply for the second phase of NMAT. 

Q. What is the 88-day test window in NMAT?

A. NMAT is a unique MBA exam, having an almost 90-day test window, 88 days to be precise. This provision is included  to cut the stress level of the exam takers. Candidates can schedule the test as per convenience and  individual  preparation level. Candidates are also allowed to take  NMAT  by  GMAC  exam for a  maximum of three attempts. 

In case, the candidates are not satisfied with their performance or if they are not confident about their preparation level, they can use the advantage of three attempts in NMAT. Test takers can book test slots as per convenience and readiness to give the test.

Q. How many times can one register for NMAT?

A. Registration for the NMAT exam is accepted one time. However, candidates can retake the test twice, for which they have to reschedule the test. For the year 2020-21, an additional phase of NMAT is being conducted and candidates can apply for it between January 18 and January 31. 

Q. What are the guidelines for document uploading for NMAT application submission?

A. Follow these guidelines mentioned below when uploading documents to fulfil the NMAT application process:
  • Acceptable photograph formats: JPG, PNG, and GIF
  • Landscape or rotated images are discarded
  • File size of images should not exceed 1 MB.
  • Photographs should have a preferably white or light-coloured background.

Q. Is there a form correction facility available for NMAT application process?

A. No, there is no provision of form correction in NMAT exam. The 'School Preference' and 'Communication Preference' fields in the application form is enabled after the submission of the application fee. All the particulars must be carefully cross-checked before submitting the NMAT application form.

Q. How can applicants know about the time slot and date of NMAT 2020?

A. The date, time slot and exam venue are printed on the NMAT admit card. It is a chain of the process—first, the candidate will have to schedule the test using the 'schedule test' option available under the exam tab on the candidate dashboard in NMAT by GMAC account. The test scheduling option will be available after they have received a confirmation email from the exam conducting authority about the receipt of the NMAT application fee. Candidates can then choose the date and time slot of the test as per their convenience for NMAT by GMAC exam.
Note: The facility to book date and time slot along with the selection of preferable locations of the test centre is available on the first-come-first-serve basis.

Q. What is the procedure to retake NMAT?

A. Retake option for NMAT exam is available in the candidate's existing registration account after the first attempt. The option to retake the test is present in the 'Retake' tab in the dashboard of the candidate’s account. Candidates have to wait 15 days before retaking NMAT exam again. It is subject to payment of application fee. Candidates can retake NMAT exam twice during the 88-day test window.

Q. What is the procedure to reschedule NMAT exam?

A. The facility to reschedule NMAT exam is available 72 hours before the scheduled time slot. However, the facility to reschedule the exam on a different date, time and test venue is subject to availability as it is on first-cum-first serve basis. The additional fee has to be remitted via credit card only. A confirmation email regarding the approval of the rescheduled test slot will be sent to the candidate's registered email ID.

Q. Is there any option to review answers in NMAT exam?

A. Yes, there is an option to review answers in NMAT exam. Candidates can review as well as make changes in the answers in different sections only within the slated sectional time limit. There is no option to move back and forth between sections. If a test taker moves to the next section, they will not be able to make any changes in the previous section.

Q. What do scaled and percentile scores refer to in NMAT exam?

A. Here is the basic difference between scaled scores and percentile scores in NMAT:

Scaled scores: The test forms are equated to account for any difference in the overall difficulty and the raw test scores are normalized on a common scale to arrive at scaled scores.

Percentile scores: The percentile rank or score is an indicator of the candidate’s score/rank as compared to the score/rank of all the other test-takers.

Q. How long does the NMAT exam window remain open?

A. The NMAT exam is conducted over a three-month period. It is divided into five windows in which each window is 15-day long (first and the last date is inclusive in the window).

Q. What is the meaning of retake of NMAT exam?

A. The meaning of retake of the NMAT exam implies that any applicant can attempt the test thrice including the first attempt. In other words, the process of reapplying for the exam is known as exam retake. However, candidates can reappear for the exam, not before 15 days from the first attempt.

Q. What is scheduling and rescheduling of NMAT exam?

A. Scheduling the NMAT exam refers to choosing a time slot for the test. Aspirants can schedule the test paying the registration fee. Candidates can, however, 'reschedule' the date if they due to some unforeseen reason are not able to appear for the test on the allotted date. There is another provision available in NMAT, known as re-take scheduling. It implies, that candidates can re-take the exam if they wish to by applying the re-take exam schedule option.

Yes, you should get a call. Especially when the COVID scenario is still not over yet. Your profile, GD and PI will define your chances. I suggest you to give some mock interviews at IMS, CL or TIME, and prepare for the best. All the best!

As far as I remember from my own experience NMAT cutoff goes up to 220-230. With score below it you won't be able to get into it.

I have scored 228 in NMAT with 9.4 CGPA in 10th, 81.60% in 12th, 83.40% in B.E. Should I expect a call from NMIMS (Mumbai) for 2021 batch?

Your academic performance is really outstanding. The NMAT score above 210 is good enough for NMIMS Mumbai. So you can be hopeful for an admission call.

First you decide which type of MBA you want to do. Specialised or general. Judicously choose the specializations. Then shortlist top college for that MBA programme for example if MBA in HR then XAVIER. IBS comes under top 50 school but its fees is high.
