What is Literature?

One of the oldest languages which were developed over 1,400 years ago, the English Language has been refined through the ages to now being highly simplified. English Literature originally began through poetry, hagiography, sermons, bible translations, chronicles and riddles. Originating from the Anlo-Saxon settler, English Literature deals with poems, poetry, riddles, novels, plays, prose and much more. English Literature does not comprise just of England scriptures, but also from Western, Oceana, Contemporary Literature and much more. However, the biggest elements which are taught since class 6, is Shakespearean Literature and the Elizabethan Age.

Right from Old English Literature (c. 450 -1066) which comprises of the Anglo-Saxon chronicles to poetry such as Battle of Maldon and Beowulf, to Middle English Literature (1066-1500) which had writers such as Geoffrey Chaucer, William Langland, to the English Renaissance (1500-1660), which had more of a cultural and artistic moment to the Elizabethan Era. One of the greatest poetry writers of the era was Thomas Wyatt, who was responsible for many innovations in English poetry alongside Henry Howard. There were various eras which are taught in courses which are offered by various universities and colleges.

Literature: Eligibility Criteria

  • BA English Literature: The candidate should have done their class 12 from a recognised board in any stream and should have secured a minimum of 50% to be eligible.
  • MA Linguistics: Students need to have done their graduation from a recognised university and should have done their BA Programme or BA (Hons) in any discipline and should have secured a minimum of 55% in order to be eligible.

English Literature Admission Process

  • Chose University/College: The first step is to search for colleges or universities which are offering courses and programmes in English Literature. The aspirant will have to check the fees, the seats offered eligibility criteria which is set for the course.
  • Apply for Course: Once the candidate has found the university offering a course in Linguistics, proceed to apply for admission. Fill up the details as required and pay the application fee. The application forms are available for a limited period of time so the candidate is advised to know the details way in advance.
  • Mode of Admission: Universities and Colleges will either conduct entrance exams for admission or offer admission through merit. For postgraduate courses, the candidate will have to appear for an entrance exam.
  • Results: Selected and qualified candidates make the merit list. The student has to get the desired rank and percentage, to be eligible for admission. For postgraduate courses, entrance exams are conducted.
  • Counselling: The candidate will have to appear for the counselling session conducted at the university to book their seat, submit their documents and pay the fees to seal admission.
