UGC NET Exam: The application window for UGC NET was closed on January 23, 2023, 5.00 pm. The candidates were allowed to make payment for the UGC NET application till 11.50 pm. The candidates were allowed to make corrections for the extended dates. Earlier, the deadline for the NTA UGC NET application was extended on January 21, 2023. The UGC NET December Cycle exam is scheduled from February 21 to March 10, 2023. 

The National Testing Agency (NTA) revised the upper age limit for JRF on January 5, 2023. According to the new guidelines of NTA, candidates must not be more than 30 years as of December 1, 2022. UGC NET dates for the June 2023 Cycle were announced on December 30, 2023. The UGC NET June Cycle will be carried out between June 13 to 22, 2023.

What is UGC NET?

University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET) or NTA UGC NET is a national-level exam conducted in order to determine the eligibility of candidates for only Assistant Professor or both Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Assistant Professor posts in Indian universities and colleges. The UGC NET 2023 exam will be held for a total of 83 subjects. Until 2021, the NTA UGC NET exam was conducted for 81 subjects. The UGC NET syllabus differs for all 83 subjects and is prescribed by the University Grants Commission itself. Until June 2018, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducted the NET exam on behalf of UGC. However, from December 2018 onwards National Testing Agency (NTA) started conducting the UGC NET exam.

UGC NET Subject Wise Exam Date 

NTA takes exams for 83 different subjects to check the eligibility for being an assistant professor or getting a junior research fellowship award or both on behalf of UGC. It is not possible to take the UGC NET exam in a single day. The UGC NET exam continues for more than a month. UGC NET application window for the December Cycle is going to be closed on January 23, 2023. The candidates can apply for the UGC NET December Cycle Exam till 5.00 pm. However, the candidates can make the payment for the UGC NET exam till 11. 50 pm. The application for UGC NET June 2023 will be released separately for the candidates. The application correction window was closed by the NTA on January 20, 2023, to make application corrections in the UGC NET December Cycle application form. UGC NET  Eligibility Criteria 2023

The basic criteria that candidates must fulfil to meet UGC NET eligibility 2023 are mentioned below in terms of the age limit and qualification:

UGC NET Age Limit 2023:

  • Candidates should not be more than 30 years of age in order to be eligible for NTA NET JRF.
  • There is no age restriction to applying for the post of Assistant Professor.
  • A relaxation of five years in age criteria is given to reserved category candidates.

UGC NET Educational Qualification 2023:

  • Candidates should have completed their post-graduation from a UGC-recognised college/university.
  • A relaxation of five per cent in educational qualification is given to reserved category candidates.

  • Candidates who have cleared State Eligibility Test (SET) before June 1, 2002, are exempted from taking the UGC NET exam.

UGC NET Syllabus 2023

UGC NET syllabus 2023 is prescribed by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The NTA UGC NET Syllabus is different for Paper 1 and Paper 2. UGC NET 2023 Exam: Major Changes

The NTA and UGC have introduced certain changes in the conduct of the UGC NET exam this year. Have a look at the major changes introduced by the NTA for the UGC NET 2023 exam below:

  • Hike in application fee: The NTA has hiked the UGC NET application fee from the December 2021 & June 2022 merged cycles. General category candidates now need to pay INR 1,100, General-EWS/OBC-NCL need to pay INR 550 and SC/ST/PwD/Transgender category needs to pay INR 275 as application fees.
  • Number of subjects increased to 83: The UGC has increased the UGC NET subjects list to 83 by introducing a new subject- 'Hindu Studies' (Subject code 102) to the list of subjects. 
  • Exam centre cities added: The UGC NET 2023 exam will be conducted in a total of 541 exam centre cities. The UGC NET 2021 exam was held in 239 cities.
  • Answer key challenge fee reduced: The NTA has reduced the provisional UGC NET answer key 2022 challenge fee from INR 1,000 to INR 200 per challenge.

UGC NET 2023 Selection Process 

UGC NET selection process begins with the release of official notification.                     UGC NET Certificate Validity: How to Download E-Certificate?

UGC NET Certificate 2023 

The NTA awards the UGC NET-qualified candidates with e-certificates. Candidates who are eligible for the UGC NET exam for Assistant Professor/ Lectureship are given the UGC NET E-certificates and candidates who are eligible for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) are given the JRF Award letter. Q: Is the notification for UGC NET June cycle released for the year 2023?

A: No, the UGC NET notification has not been released for the June cycle yet. Though, the June cycle dates have been announced by the UGC chairman M Jagadesh Kumar on December 30, 2022 through his twitter handle. The June cycle exams will be carried out between June 13 to 22, 2023.  The June cycle application form will be released separately. However, UGC was taking the NET/ JRF exam in merged cycle for two years due to disturbance in cycle due to pandemic.

A: You can download the UGC NET admit card 2023 by following the steps given below:
  • Visit the website- ugcnet.nta.nic.in
  • Click on ‘Download Admit Card...’
  • Log in using the 'Application Number', 'Date of Birth' and 'Security Pin'

  • Take the printout for future use

Q: When was the UGC NET certificate be released for December 2021 and June 2022 cycle?

A: The UGC NET certificate was released by the UGC/NTA for December 2021 and June 2022 cycle for NET and JRF. The candidates can download the certificate on the official website. The UGC NET certificate will help the qualified candidates to prove their eligibility to become the assistant professor or getting the fellowship for the PHD or both. The candidates have to fill out their application number and date of birth to download the UGC NET/JRF certificate.

Q: Why UGC NET exam is conducted?

A: The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts the National Eligibility Test (NET) on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC) or NTA UGC NET to determine eligibility for Assistant Professorship and for award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for candidates who want to teach in Indian universities and colleges. The JRF qualified candidates are given approx INR 32,000 per month to complete their PhD research. However, after two years the amount is increased and JRF converts into SRF (Senior Research Fellowship).

Q: When will UGC NET answer key 2023 release?

A: The UGC NET final answer key 2023 will be released by the NTA on the official website soon. The final answer key is released after the release of the provisional answer key. UGC activates the objection window for the candidates to raise objection against the released provisional answer key if the candidates find any discrepancy in the answer key. After the scrutiny of the provisional asnwer key objections, UGC releases the final answer key for the candidates. No further changes are made nor the board accepts the any objection after the release of final answer key. 

Q: Is there a negative marking in the UGC NET exam?

A: No, there is no negative marking in the UGC NET exam. Candidates are awarded zero marks for an incorrect answer or a question left unanswered. The complete exam pattern of the UGC NET exam has been given below for the candidates: 
  • Total number of questions in UGC NET exam: 300 marks 
  • Total number of questions: 150
  • Marks allotted for each correct answer: +2
  • Marks deduction for incorrect answers: 0
  • Exam duration: 3 hours 

Q: What is difference between UGC NET and CSIR NET?

A: Both UGC NET and CSIR NET exams are conducted by the NTA to determine the eligibility of candidates for Assistant Professorship and/ or Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for Indian universities and colleges. However, the major difference is that the UGC NET exam is conducted for 81 subjects in all the areas. However, the CSIR NET exam is conducted only for science stream.

A: To apply for UGC NET 2023 JRF, candidates should not be more than 31 years in age. However, there is no age limit to apply for the post of Assistant Professor. The candidate educational qualification eligibility has been given below for the candidate's ease:
  • Candidates should have secured at least 55 per cent marks in master’s degree exams.
  • A relaxation of five per cent is given to candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC)/Scheduled Tribe (ST)/Other Backward Class (OBC)/Persons with Disability (PwD)/Transgender category.
  • Candidates from reserved categories require only 50 per cent aggregate marks in their master’s degree exams
