Engineering is a stream of education that involves the application of Science, Technology, and Mathematics to innovate, design, develop, and maintain machines, structures, software, hardware, and systems and processes. This field offers a range of career opportunities across all industries, making it one of the most sought-after courses pursued by students after Class 12, especially those from the Science stream. As per the AICTE statistics for the year 2021-22, there are 5917 Engineering and technology institutes in the country with a total annual intake of 23,61,753 candidates. According to a 2018-19 report of the All India Survey of Higher Education (AISHE) powered by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD), Engineering is the third major stream with 37.70 lakh students enrolled for Bachelor degrees in Engineering. The share of male students enrolled in Engineering and Technology is 71.1 percent whereas female enrolment is 28.9 percent.

Students planning to study Engineering in India can choose from nearly 100 specializations, with Computer Science Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering being some of the most popular ones. The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and some private technical institutes such as Birla Institute of Science & Technology (BITS) Pilani are some of the best institutes to pursue Engineering from. According to Shiksha, more than 3,500 colleges are offering Engineering courses in India.

Eligibility criteria for undergraduate (BTech/BSc) programs, students typically need to pass Class 12th with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as mandatory subjects, with minimum marks requirements ranging from 50 percent to 75 percent. Many institutions require scores from national or state-level engineering entrance exams like JEE Main, JEE Advanced, state-level CETs, or university-specific tests. However, some institutions consider merit-based admissions based on Class 12th marks.

Q. What is Engineering?

A. Engineering is the application of science and mathematics for making properties of matter and the sources of energy in nature useful to people. It deals with the designing and application of machines across factories and industries and production of finished goods for human use. It is one of the most fundamental domains which is important for the development of any nation. All the essential services to humankind is dependent on engineering such as Medicine, Security, Telecommunications, Transportation, Housing and Food. Therefore, engineering is a promising field to establish one's career.

Q. What is the difference between Science and Engineering?

A. Science is knowledge based on observed facts and tested truths whereas Engineering is the creative application of scientific principles. Engineering is used to plan, build, direct, guide, manage, or work on systems to maintain and improve the daily lives of people. Engineers take abstract ideas and apply science and mathematics to build products to meet the needs of mankind. They deal with simplifying manual process and leveraging human labour to increase the production. Scientists are responsible for formulating theories and devising formulae or solutions for any scientific problem. Therefore, though these two fields are interrelated but the courses offered are slightly different in terms of course curriculum as well as outcomes.

Q. Can the Engineering course be done in distance mode?

A. No, the recent UGC and AICTE guidelines have made it mandatory for institutes to refrain from offering courses in engineering in distance mode. These courses consist of practical applications, therefore need hands-on training. Even if some institutes offer engineering courses in distance education mode, still most institutes offer engineering programs in regular mode due to the course structure and lab works students need to do.

Q. What are the Best engineering degrees in India and Why?

A. Determining the "best" engineering degree is subjective and depends on individual interests, job market trends, and personal goals. However, some highly sought-after and promising options in India include:

  2. Master data structures and algorithms: Data structures and algorithms form the foundation of software engineering. Practice solving coding problems regularly on platforms like LeetCode, HackerRank, or CodeChef.

  3. Practice system design: System design interviews assess your ability to design large-scale systems. Practice designing systems like a URL shortening service or a distributed cache.

  4. Refine behavioral and soft skills: Google values behavioral and soft skills as much as technical skills. Practice answering behavioral questions and demonstrate strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.

  5. Mock interviews: Conduct mock interviews with experienced engineers or friends to gain confidence and practice answering common interview questions.

Moreover, you can research Google's interview process, format, duration, and types of questions typically asked in Google engineering interviews.

Q. How's my career affected if I get 1 year back on my Engineering course?

A. Taking a year back will obviously delay your graduation date, meaning you'll enter the workforce a year later than your peers. This could put you behind in terms of career advancement and earning potential, as your peers will have had more time to gain experience and establish themselves in their fields.

Ultimately, the impact on your career goals will depend on how you utilize your year off. If you use it productively to gain skills, experience, or personal growth, it could potentially benefit your career in the long run. However, if you take a year off without a clear plan or purpose, it could delay your career progression and make it more challenging to achieve your goals.
