Engineering is a stream of education that involves the application of Science, Technology, and Mathematics to innovate, design, develop and maintain machines, structures, software, hardware, and systems & processes. This field offers a range of career opportunities across all industries, making it one of the most sought-after courses pursued by students after Class 12, especially those from the Science stream.

As per the AICTE statistics for the year 2021-22, there are 5917 engineering and technology institutes in the country with a total annual intake of 23,61,753 candidates. A 2018-19 report of the All India Survey of Higher Education (AISHE) powered by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD), Engineering is the third major stream with 37.70 lakh students enrolled at the undergraduate level. The share of male students enrolled in Engineering and Technology is 71.1 percent whereas female enrolment is 28.9 percent.

Students planning to study Engineering in India can choose from nearly 100 specializations, with Computer Science Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering being some of the most popular ones.

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and some private technical institutes such as Birla Institute of Science & Technology (BITS) Pilani are some of the best institutes to pursue engineering from. According to Shiksha, there are more than 3,500 colleges offering engineering courses in India.

Eligibility for Engineering Courses

The criteria of eligibility for taking admission in engineering courses vary from institute to institute. However, one of the basic conditions is that students must have passed class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as subjects. Several institutes have the condition of a minimum percentage of marks in class 12 which varies for various institutes. Also, some institutes do have the condition of maximum and the minimum age for taking admission in engineering courses.

Courses like Marine Engineering and Aeronautical Engineering also require certain medical clearance which students need to pass before taking admission. Generally, the allotment of seats in engineering institutes is through the entrance exam. But many institutes also offer admission based on the merit of class 12. Candidates can check here the broad range of eligibility conditions.

That is much better than buying study guides or coaching class materials. You may ask Why, well here is why:
1. Study guides as I had used to prepare for GATE have many errors and mistakes in their materials. This means you are studying wrong formulas and concepts. Also to keep the page numbers short, they just provide definitions and 1 or 2 solved example which is insufficient to understand the concepts as GATE exam requires you to quickly analyze questions and solve them. Without understanding, how can one even solve questions in such a competitive exam. However, the study guide has good English and aptitude sections and the materials are sufficient to score well in the English and aptitude sections of GATE exam.
2. Coaching material on the other hand is same story. Similar to the GATE study guides, the concepts are written in the coaching material are short and one formula will be written per concept. Very difficult to understand if you want to go through concepts. However if you want to mug up then it's good. On a side note, even GATE coaching classes are waste of time and money. Most of the teachers emphasize on mugging up concepts than understand on what they are for. Most of these classes occur non stop so it gets boring and frustrating to focus for 5hrs a day in coaching classes. Just keep a goal, buy and use you B.Tech text books (or books) and cover the topics one by one. You will definitely succeed.

After spending 3 years at IIT madras as an undergrad student let me to air my opinion, which is solely mine. According to me : It dosent matter that much
The end goal is always to be a successful and good engineer and do something which excites you. So it really dosent matter from which branch you belong. Take for example: sundar pichai a metallurgy graduation is running the biggest tech company of the world (Google). Contrary to the traditional belief that by having a degree in metallurgy all you can get to work with is heated ladles full of melt and alot of dust.

If what you are referring is site engineering, then most likely you would not be need any programming language. Just a basic excel and maybe a little knowledge on Autocad would be enough
But if you intend to specialize say on hydrostructures and you will have to work with some set of problems that cannot be solved analytically. Then you would need an alternative method like FEM. That is where your need starts. This situation is valid for geotechs earthquake engineers and structure guys etc. So, in most cases, yes it is a must. In some other cases, it is optional. What I would suggest is do not SEE it as a necessity. Try to understand it. You should know at least one programming language. You would not believe how handy they can be even in cases you do not have to.
