What is M.P.Ed (Master of Physical Education)?

MPEd (Master of Physical Education) is a two-year duration postgraduate course in physical education. Physical education is a domain concerned with sports-related activities and deals with subjects such as sports science, sports psychology, sports research methodology, sports medicine, exercise physiology, etc.

The postgraduate programme in physical education acquaints students with the dynamics of sports activities and offers them professional training as well as knowledge about fitness in sports. The course also enables students enhance their skills in the respective field.

Admission to MPEd course is provided on the basis of candidates’ performance in the written entrance exam followed by a practical/ physical fitness test conducted by different universities and colleges. It may be noted that some institutions also provide direct admission to candidates on the basis of merit determined through their score in the qualifying exam.   

MPEd Eligibility Criteria 

All candidates who possess a graduation degree in BPEd (Bachelor of Physical Education) with at least 50% - 60% aggregate marks from a recognised university/ college fulfill eligibility criteria for MPEd course.

Note: The eligibility criteria mentioned above might vary depending on the policies of the university in which a candidate is applying.

Course curriculum for MPEd

MPEd is a two-year duration course typically divided into four semesters. Syllabus for MPEd includes theory as well as practical subjects. Among theory subjects, there are some core and elective subjects. There a variety of jobs available for MPEd students in areas such as health clubs, sports academies, schools, colleges, fitness centres, spas, etc.    

Some of the job profiles that can be taken up by MPEd students are:

  • Teacher: A physical education teacher has to ensure that students adopt healthy lifestyles and engage in a sport activity of their interest. A physical education teacher organises games and challenges that promote physical activity among students of different age groups. The main aim of the teacher is to develop motors skills and physical development among students.  
  • Sports/ Athletic Trainer: An athletic trainer performs tasks such as bracing athletes to prevent any injury before a game, evaluating injury, giving emergency care, and creating rehabilitation plans for injured athletes.
  • Consultant: The consultant’s primary responsibility is to coordinate with the in-house team and offer consultation on physical education matters. 
  • Umpire/ Referee: An umpire or a referee is responsible for maintaining the standard of play of a sporting event. The professional judges the play, detects violations and also decides penalties as per the rules of the sport/ game.
  • Sports Therapist: A sports therapist is a professional who utilises sports and exercise principles to enhance performance, preparation as well as injury prevention programmes. The therapist also provides sport and remedial massage to people as required.
